The two exclamation points are the Emphasized Tapback in Messages. Someone added it to a specific message to stress it: “that’s important,” “wow,” or “I strongly agree.” Apple’s developer documentation defines it only as “Content indicating that the user emphasized something,” so the exact feeling depends on the conversation.
It’s a reaction, not typed text
The marks are a Tapback attached to one message. They aren’t punctuation the sender added to their own text. Apple’s iPhone guide calls the reaction “exclamation points.” The developer documentation uses the name “Emphasized” (the INMessageTypeTapbackEmphasized type).

How to read it
Apple gives no further emotional meaning, so use context:
- On a joke or good news, it usually signals enthusiasm or amusement.
- On an instruction, plan or warning, it usually means “noted” or “this matters.”
- On a surprising statement, it can mean astonishment.
If the intent matters, ask the person.
See who sent it
Everyone in the conversation can see a Tapback. When a message has several, they appear as a stack. Tap the stack to see who added each one.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Change or remove your own
Tap your Tapback, then choose a different reaction. Tap the same one again to remove it. You can’t edit or remove anyone else’s.
Don’t confuse it with a failed-message mark
A reaction sits on a received or sent message bubble. A red exclamation mark beside an outgoing message is a different thing: it indicates the message failed to send.

Tapbacks have expanded
Apple’s June 2024 iOS 18 announcement said Tapbacks were “redesigned and expanded to include any emoji or sticker.” The exclamation points remain one of the standard options. Apple’s current guide for Tapbacks in Messages on iPhone (checked October 2026) still lists them.
