In Formula 1, flags and some lights give drivers official instructions: yellow means danger, red stops the session, chequered ends it, blue warns about traffic, and a numbered black-family signal addresses one driver. Trackside light panels and signals on the FIA Standard ECU steering-wheel display have the same regulatory value as flags; starting-grid lights are informational only. The guide below reflects the FIA’s 2026 regulations checked on 3 October 2026.
What do yellow flags mean in F1?
Yellow flags warn of danger on the track. The number of waved flags changes how urgently drivers must respond.

| Signal | What it tells viewers | What drivers must do |
|---|---|---|
| Single waved yellow | There is danger ahead, often near the marshal post showing the flag. | Reduce speed and be prepared to change direction. In F1, stewards expect earlier braking and/or a discernible speed reduction in the relevant marshal sector. |
| Double waved yellow | The hazard is more serious; the track may be blocked. | Reduce speed significantly and be ready to change direction or stop. Drivers must not attempt a meaningful lap time. A lap through a double-yellow sector in qualifying or sprint qualifying is deleted. During a Safety Car or VSC period, they must also stay above the FIA ECU minimum time in each affected sector. |
In short, single yellow calls for caution and readiness to react; double yellow requires a much greater reduction in speed and readiness to stop. The FIA’s 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 09 set out the F1-specific requirements.

Red: the session is stopped
A red flag means a practice session or race has been stopped or suspended. Drivers must reduce speed, must not overtake, and must follow the instructed procedure to return to the pits or proceed to the red-flag line. The red flag alone does not tell viewers whether the race will restart or end; officials communicate that decision.

Green: the local restriction has ended
A green flag indicates that the end of a speed limit has been reached and follows the yellow-flag incident. It does not cancel any other Race Control instruction that remains in force.

What do the black flags with a number mean?
A number alongside a black-family signal identifies the driver it addresses. These are individual messages, not session-wide warnings.
| Signal | Meaning | Driver response or significance |
|---|---|---|
| Black flag with the driver’s number | The named driver must stop. | The driver must stop at the pits or at the designated place on the next approach to pit entry. The decision to show this flag rests with the stewards. |
| Black flag with an orange disc and the driver’s number | The car has a mechanical problem. | An individual mechanical warning; it is not the red flag that stops a session. |
| Black-and-white diagonal flag with the driver’s number | Warning for unsportsmanlike behaviour or conduct that may bring a penalty if repeated. | An individual conduct warning, not a session stoppage. |
Appendix H of the FIA International Sporting Code describes these driver-specific signals.

Are Safety Car and VSC signals flags?
No. A Safety Car and a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) are race-control procedures, not flag colours. Their F1-specific procedures and driver instructions are set out in the 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations. During a double-yellow sector under Safety Car or VSC conditions, the additional FIA ECU minimum-time requirement applies.
Which lights have official meaning?
Trackside light panels and flag-equivalent signals shown on the FIA Standard ECU steering-wheel display carry the same regulatory meaning as flags. Starting-grid light panels, by contrast, are informational only under the current F1 sporting rules. Broadcast graphics may relay or summarize information, so not every coloured graphic should be treated as a marshal instruction.
Quick Recap
How to read an F1 signal at a glance
- Yellow: danger; slow down and prepare to react. Double yellow means slow significantly and be ready to stop.
- Red: the session or race has been stopped; await officials’ directions.
- Chequered: the session or race has ended.
- Blue: approaching traffic; its practical context depends on whether the session is practice or a race.
- Number beside a black-family signal: a message for that particular driver, with the flag design indicating whether it is a stop, mechanical or conduct warning.
