F1–F12 are function keys, but they do not have one universal set of actions. What happens depends on the active app, operating system, keyboard and sometimes what currently has focus. The examples below identify the context so you can tell a browser shortcut from a Windows or Excel one.
Why F1–F12 do different things
Function keys are shortcuts whose assignments vary by software. Microsoft describes keyboard shortcuts as keys or key combinations that provide an alternative to an action typically done with a mouse in its Microsoft Edge shortcut reference. A key may behave differently in Windows, a browser, or a desktop app; even within one app, the result can depend on which field or feature has focus.

Web apps add another wrinkle: the browser may handle a key before the web app can. Microsoft notes that Excel for the web runs in a browser, so common shortcuts such as F1 may apply to the browser rather than Excel. Check the shortcut guide for the specific app and version when an action matters.

|---|---|---|
| F1 | Microsoft Edge opens its support page. | This is an Edge action, not a guarantee that F1 opens help in every app. Microsoft Edge shortcuts |
| F2 | No broad mapping is established by the references cited here. | Check the active app’s shortcut list rather than assuming a familiar action applies everywhere. |
| F3 | Windows uses it to search File Explorer; Chrome and Firefox document find/search-related actions. | The precise result varies by app and may depend on whether a search feature is already active. Windows shortcuts, Chrome shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts |
| F4 | In desktop Excel, cycles through reference types when a cell reference is selected in a formula. | This is specific to Excel’s formula-editing context; it is not a general Windows action. Excel shortcuts |
| F5 | Firefox reloads the current page. | Do not assume the same assignment in every browser without checking its shortcut reference. Firefox shortcuts |
| F6 | Windows uses it to cycle through screen elements. Firefox documents movement among frames or pop-up areas and focus movement that can reach the address bar. | Focus behavior differs between apps and may depend on the current interface. Windows shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts |
| F7 | Edge and Firefox offer caret browsing, which lets you move a text cursor through page content with the keyboard. | Firefox documents F7 as a toggle; consult the browser’s current guide for exact behavior. Microsoft Edge shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts |

| F10 | Windows can activate the active window’s menu bar. Edge assigns it to focus the Settings and more button; Firefox documents menu activation. Chrome lists toolbar focus. | The same key can target different controls depending on whether Windows or a browser receives it. Windows shortcuts, Microsoft Edge shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts, Chrome shortcuts |
| F11 | Edge, Chrome and Firefox document a full-screen action. | These are browser-specific documented shortcuts; confirm against the browser and platform you use. Microsoft Edge shortcuts, Chrome shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts |
| F12 | Edge, Chrome and Firefox document opening Developer Tools. | Developer shortcuts can vary by platform or configuration, so check the target browser’s current reference. Microsoft Edge shortcuts, Chrome shortcuts, Firefox shortcuts |
How to identify what a function key will do
- Identify the active app. Check whether you are in Windows, a browser, a desktop program such as Excel, or a web app inside a browser.
- Check the app’s shortcut reference. Use the official guide for the exact browser or application; shortcuts may differ between desktop and web editions.
- Notice what has focus. A key may act on a selected field, page feature or browser control rather than the overall app.
- Check your keyboard instructions. On compact or multimedia keyboards, the function row may have a different layer or require a device-specific setting. The references here do not establish one universal Fn-lock behavior or key sequence.
Why a browser and a web app can disagree
A web app runs inside a browser, which also has its own keyboard shortcuts. As Microsoft explains for Excel for the web, a common shortcut such as F1 may be interpreted by the browser rather than by the web app. If a key opens a browser feature instead of the function you expected in a website, consult both the web app’s shortcut documentation and the browser’s list; the app may offer an alternate shortcut.
