The ear is the body’s hearing-and-balance system. The mouth, also called the oral cavity, is the entry point for food and drink and helps with digestion, taste, speech, swallowing, and breathing.
What is the ear?
The ear is the sensory system responsible for hearing and for part of the body’s sense of balance. It has three broad divisions: the external ear, middle ear, and inner ear.

How the ear supports hearing
The external ear collects sound and directs it toward the eardrum. Vibrations then pass through small bones in the middle ear. In the inner ear, the cochlea converts this mechanical activity into neural signals. Auditory pathways carry those signals to the brain, where they are interpreted as sound.

How the ear supports balance
Vestibular structures in the inner ear contribute to equilibrium. Balance is therefore an inner-ear function as well as hearing being an ear function.

What is the mouth?
The mouth, or oral cavity, is the first portion of the digestive system. Its main structures include the lips, tongue, palate, and teeth. Together, they take in food and drink and begin processing food before swallowing.
What the mouth’s parts do
- Teeth tear and grind food.
- The tongue moves food around the mouth, contributes to taste, and helps shape speech sounds.
- The palate forms the roof of the mouth and separates the oral and nasal spaces.
- The lips help contain food and contribute to speech articulation.
The mouth also participates in swallowing and normal respiration. It is not only a digestive structure: it is involved in communication and breathing, too.
