Precision screwdriver bits are shaped to fit specific screw recesses. Identify the recess, choose the matching drive profile, and select a size that completely fills the head without rocking. A near-match—such as using Phillips in a JIS recess or a standard Torx bit on a pin-in Torx screw—can slip and damage the fastener.
What a precision screwdriver bit actually does
A bit transfers turning force from a handle into the shaped recess in a screw head. The profile determines whether the bit’s faces contact the recess correctly; the size determines how much of that contact area is available. Both have to be right. iFixit’s “Choosing the Right Screwdriver Bit,” updated August 11, 2026, advises choosing a bit that fills the screw head. An undersized bit can wobble and round the recess, while an oversized bit may sit on the edges instead of engaging the bottom.

Drive names are not interchangeable labels. Phillips, JIS, Pozidriv, Torx, security Torx, hex, pentalobe and tri-point describe different geometries. A precision kit can include several of them because small screws used in electronics, appliances and other equipment do not all use one standard. The exact screw used in a device must be checked rather than inferred from the product category.
Recognizing the main precision bit profiles
| Bit type | How to recognize the screw recess | What the bit engages | Common markings or naming notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phillips | Four-arm cross | A matching Phillips cross recess. The design is intended to cam out when excessive torque is applied, so slipping is a warning to reduce force and verify the fit. | PH000, PH00, PH0, PH1 and larger numbers indicate sizes; choose by recess fit, not by the apparent diameter of the screw. |
| Slotted or flathead | One straight slot across the head | A flat blade whose width and thickness match the slot. A blade that is too narrow can twist and damage the slot; one that is too thick will not seat. | Small kits may label these SL1 through SL4. |
| Torx | Six-lobed internal star | A six-lobed driver with the same size designation as the screw’s recess. | Usually marked with a T followed by a number. |
| Security Torx or pin-in Torx | A six-lobed star with a fixed pin in the center | A Torx bit with a hole through its tip so it can pass over the center pin. | Often labeled with a suffix such as H or TR; manufacturer kits list it separately from ordinary Torx. |
| Hex or Allen | Six straight sides forming an internal hexagon | A hexagonal driver that contacts all six internal faces when correctly sized. | Precision sets commonly give the size in millimeters and use H or hex terminology. |
| Pentalobe | Five rounded lobes in a star-like pattern | A five-lobed pentalobe driver. Its five points must not be confused with Torx’s six. | Examples in kits include P2, P5 and P6. |
| Tri-point, tri-wing or Y | Three-lobed or three-wing recess | A matching three-point driver. The names appear in different kit descriptions, so compare the physical shape instead of assuming every “Y” or “tri-wing” label denotes an identical geometry. | Manufacturers use both “Tri-Point” and “Tri-wing.” |
| Pozidriv | A cross with extra, smaller ribs between the principal arms | A Pozidriv bit that fits those additional ribs. A Phillips bit is not a substitute simply because both look cross-shaped. | Usually marked PZ and listed separately from PH. |
| JIS | A Japanese Industrial Standard cross drive that resembles Phillips | A JIS bit with the matching geometry. iFixit notes that JIS and Phillips bits are not always interchangeable. | Often marked J; ARCTIC’s toolkit lists JIS separately from Phillips. |
Specialty profiles found in some kits
Some precision assortments add square (SQ), tri-angle, U-type, W-type and nut-driver bits. Their job is the same as any other profile: fit the corresponding recess. Xiaomi’s Mi Precision Screwdriver Kit Specifications (model MJJXLSD002QW) lists W-type, U-type, tri-angle and tri-wing alongside Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, pentalobe and hex. Those additions do not mean every project needs them; they show why the contents of one kit cannot be assumed from another.

Why profile and size must be selected together
Finding the general shape is only the first decision. A PH000 and a PH1 are both Phillips, but they are not interchangeable. The same principle applies to Torx, hex, pentalobe and every other family. A bit should enter the recess fully, sit square to the fastener and resist gentle hand pressure without rocking.
- Inspect the recess under good light. Count the arms or lobes, look for additional ribs, and check whether a center pin blocks the opening.
- Choose the exact profile. A four-arm cross may be Phillips, Pozidriv or JIS; determine which geometry the recess actually has before applying torque.
- Start with a candidate size. Insert the bit vertically without turning. It should fill the recess rather than touch only the corners.
- Check the seat by hand. Apply light downward pressure and try a small rotation. Stop if the bit rocks, rises out of the recess or contacts only one side.
- Move one size at a time. If the bit is loose, try the next larger size in the same family; if it will not enter fully, try the next smaller size. Never force a profile that does not seat.
- Turn with controlled pressure. Keep the handle aligned with the screw and use enough downward pressure to maintain engagement, not enough to crush the head or flex the bit.
Phillips deserves an extra caution because its geometry is designed to cam out under excessive torque. Cam-out is not evidence that a larger Phillips bit is needed; it can indicate the wrong family, an incorrect size, insufficient alignment or a damaged recess.
Distinguishing similar-looking cross drives
Phillips versus JIS
Phillips and JIS can appear almost identical at a glance, especially in a small electronic screw. Their geometry differs, and iFixit specifically warns that the bits are not always interchangeable. If a Phillips bit feels loose in a cross recess, do not compensate by pushing harder. Try a correctly sized JIS bit if the screw and equipment documentation indicate that standard, then verify that the new bit seats before turning.

It also comes with two double-ended pry bars to facilitate repairs; and a model sticker to help you quickly identify the bit.
Phillips versus Pozidriv
Pozidriv recesses add smaller ribs between the main cross arms. Those ribs are visible when the head is clean and well lit. A Phillips tip may enter but fail to engage the extra surfaces, increasing the chance of slipping. Use a PZ bit when those secondary ribs are present.
Torx versus security Torx
Count the lobes first. Both versions have six, but a security screw has a pin in the center. A standard Torx tip will stop against that pin; a security Torx bit has a central hole. Do not drill out or remove the pin merely to use an ordinary bit, because that changes the fastener and can damage the surrounding part.
Torx versus pentalobe
Torx has six lobes; pentalobe has five rounded lobes. The profiles can look similar when viewed at an angle, so count rather than guessing. A T-size bit in a five-lobed recess will not provide reliable contact.

Bit type and shank compatibility are separate questions
The shape at the working end tells you whether a bit fits the screw. The shank tells you whether the bit fits the handle. These are separate compatibility checks, a distinction highlighted by a reader question in iFixit’s guide about the size of the hex shaft on smaller bits.

That measurement describes the supplied format; it is not a claim that every precision handle accepts every C4 bit or that all small bits share that length. Before buying loose replacements, check the handle’s socket and the bit’s shank dimensions, retention method and length. A bit can have the correct PH, T or H profile and still fail to lock into an incompatible handle.

| Assortment | Profiles specifically listed | Compatibility detail | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARCTIC Precision Screwdriver Toolkit | Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, hex, pentalobe, tri-point, Pozidriv and JIS | The manual presents separate families and sizes for these drives. | Useful when a job may involve both familiar cross drives and less common JIS or Pozidriv screws. |
| Xiaomi Mi Precision Screwdriver Kit, model MJJXLSD002QW | Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, pentalobe, hex, W-type, U-type, tri-angle and tri-wing | Bits are specified as C4 × 28 mm. | Shows that specialty profiles and a defined shank format may be included even when another kit uses a different family mix. |
Use those lists as examples of assortment differences, not as a universal checklist. Compare the screws you actually expect to remove with the exact profile names and sizes in the package. A set containing many Torx sizes does not replace a JIS bit, and a set with tri-wing does not automatically contain tri-point or tri-angle geometry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical buying checklist
- Drive families: Confirm that the set includes the profiles visible on your screws—such as PH, J, PZ, T, security Torx, H, pentalobe or a specialty three-point drive.
- Exact sizes: Check the size range within each family. A kit can include a profile but omit the small or large size your fastener needs.
- Shank and length: Match the bits to the handle’s socket. Xiaomi’s C4 × 28 mm specification is one example, not a universal precision-bit standard.
- Security features: If the recess has a center pin, select a security bit with the required hole.
- Tip condition: Inspect used bits for rounded edges or chipped points. A worn tip can mimic a sizing problem and damage an otherwise good screw.
- Access and reach: Confirm that the bit length and handle clearance let you approach the screw straight. Side loading makes even the correct profile slip.
What to do when a bit slips
Stop before the recess is damaged
Set the handle down and inspect the head. Slipping means the current combination of profile, size, seating and screw condition is not reliable. Continuing to turn can round the recess and make later removal harder.
Re-check the geometry
For a cross, distinguish Phillips, JIS and Pozidriv. For a star, count five versus six lobes and check for a center pin. For a straight slot, verify both blade width and thickness. Clean debris from the recess so the bit can reach the bottom.

Re-check the size and alignment
Try the neighboring size in the same family and hold the handle directly in line with the screw. The bit should fill the recess without rocking. If it still slips, stop rather than using an improvised bit or excessive force; neither is a dependable repair method.
Assess the screw itself
A previously damaged head may no longer accept the original size securely. At that point, the priority is preserving the surrounding component and choosing an appropriate extraction method for the specific fastener, not repeatedly testing random profiles.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a bit by the screw’s outside diameter instead of by the recess it must fill.
- Assuming every cross-shaped recess is Phillips.
- Treating standard Torx and security Torx as the same bit.
- Confusing five-lobed pentalobe with six-lobed Torx.
- Assuming “tri-wing,” “tri-point” and “Y” labels guarantee identical geometry.
- Buying replacement tips without checking the handle’s shank format and length.
- Forcing a loose bit because the screw appears too tight.
- Assuming a kit’s profile list covers every screw found in a particular device or product category.
Bottom line
Precision bit types describe the shape they are designed to engage: cross, slot, six-lobed star, pinned star, hexagon, five-lobed star, three-point and other specialized recesses. Identify that shape, choose the size that fills it, and confirm that the bit’s shank fits your handle. The most reliable precision screwdriver bit kit is therefore the one whose documented profiles, sizes and interface match your actual screws—not simply the one with the largest piece count.
