On ring-style speakers, blue commonly means Alexa is listening, processing, or responding; yellow signals a notification; green a call; red a muted microphone; and orange setup activity. Purple and white have more than one meaning. The chart below follows Amazon Alexa Developers’ general light-ring guidance; Echo screens, Echo Auto, and some newer models have their own indicators.
Echo speaker light meanings at a glance
Amazon Alexa Developers’ general Light Ring guide distinguishes states by both color and motion. Treat this as a guide to ring-style speakers, not a guarantee that every Echo model or software version behaves identically.

What each color usually tells you
Blue: listening, processing, or answering
Blue covers several stages of a voice request, not just listening. Watch the movement: a directional blue light indicates listening, alternating blue indicates processing, and pulsing blue indicates Alexa is answering, according to Amazon’s general ring guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYellow: a notification is waiting
A pulsing yellow ring indicates a notification in the general guide. On Amazon’s named 2025 Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio Alexa+ models, yellow indicates a pending or unread notification.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Green: calling
On ring-style speakers in the general guide, pulsing green means an incoming call and cycling green means a call is active. Don’t confuse green with blue: Amazon’s developer brand guidance explicitly says not to use blue to represent calling.
Red: the microphone is muted
A solid red ring on a ring-style speaker indicates the microphone is muted. Amazon Customer Service likewise says, “The light indicator is red when your device is muted.” Press the microphone button to turn listening back on if that is what you intend.

Orange: setup activity
A cycling orange ring indicates setup in Amazon’s general light-ring guide. Echo Auto can also show orange while setting up or attempting an internet connection, so check the device-specific interpretation before assuming the speaker chart applies.
Purple: error or Do Not Disturb
The timing changes the meaning in the general ring guide: quickly pulsing purple indicates an error, while slowly pulsing purple indicates Do Not Disturb. Amazon’s help for the 2025 Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio describes a brief purple light after Alexa speaks when Do Not Disturb is enabled.

White: volume feedback or Away mode
White can be contextual volume feedback; a cycling white ring is Away mode in the developer guide. A white light therefore needs to be interpreted by its behavior and context, rather than treated as one universal status.

Alexa+ on Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio (2025 release)
Amazon’s model-specific help describes blue for listening, processing, and Alexa speaking; yellow for a pending or unread notification; green for incoming or active calls; red when the microphone on/off button is pressed; and a brief purple light after Alexa speaks when Do Not Disturb is on. These descriptions apply to the named 2025 models, not automatically to every Echo speaker.

Echo devices with a screen
Amazon’s screen-device guidance describes a pulsing blue light at the bottom of the screen while Alexa listens, a blue wave moving left to right while it processes a request, red when the camera and microphones are off, and green during a call or Drop In. Do Not Disturb is represented by a crescent-moon icon. A screen’s indicators are not simply the speaker’s light-ring chart in another location.
Echo Auto
Echo Auto has its own light patterns. Amazon’s dedicated guide says cyan on blue means Alexa is listening; cyan moving toward the center means the request was heard and is processing; side-to-side motion indicates startup or waiting for Bluetooth; red means the microphone is off; orange indicates setup or an internet connection attempt; green indicates a call or message in progress or incoming; yellow means a new notification; and purple may indicate setup failure during initial setup.

A status light by itself does not establish that the device has failed. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the basics:
- Check the microphone: If the ring is red, the device is muted. Press the microphone button if you want Alexa to hear requests.
- Check power: Use the power adapter supplied with the Echo, then unplug and reconnect the device.
- Check the connection: Confirm the internet connection is active and that the Echo is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Try the Action button: On a speaker, press Action to see whether the device responds.
- Improve placement: Move the Echo away from walls, other speakers, or background noise that could interfere with hearing your request.
