What Do the Colors Mean in NYT Connections? Difficulty and Mistake Limits Explained

NYT Connections colors indicate category difficulty: yellow is easiest and purple is trickiest. Green and blue are not officially ranked, and the Help Center does not state the live mistake limit.

In NYT Connections, colors indicate how difficult a completed category is: yellow is the easiest and purple is the trickiest, according to the New York Times Help Center. Green and blue are the two middle colors, but the official explanation does not rank them or assign either color to a fixed type of word connection. The same help page describes mistake statistics, but it does not establish the live-game mistake allowance or say exactly what happens after an incorrect submission.

What the four Connections colors mean

Connections uses color as a difficulty signal for the four groups you complete. The New York Times Help Center states: “Each group is assigned a color (Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple), with Yellow being the easiest category and Purple being the trickiest.” That gives two firm endpoints:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Yellow: the easiest category in that puzzle.
  • Purple: the trickiest category in that puzzle.

Green and blue sit between those endpoints, but the Help Center does not say which one is easier. It also does not define a permanent role for either color. A green category is not officially “always synonyms,” for example, and purple is not officially reserved for wordplay, spelling tricks or a particular grammatical pattern.

The safest way to read the colors is therefore as relative difficulty labels attached after you find a group, not as a code that tells you what kind of connection to search for. The color can help you understand the puzzle’s design, but it is not a category clue you can reliably use before solving.

How the Connections board works

Each daily puzzle presents 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with every word used once. The intended result is four coherent themes, and the Help Center says that every puzzle has exactly one solution.

Why several answers can look right

Connections is deliberately built around overlap. Words can appear to fit more than one category, even though only one complete arrangement is correct. A word may have a plausible synonym relationship with three others while also belonging to a different set based on a name, phrase, object or other shared feature. That ambiguity is not evidence that the puzzle has multiple official answers; it is the mechanism that makes the board difficult.

When colors appear

The colors are assigned to the completed groups as difficulty cues. They do not replace the grouping task, reveal the theme in advance or identify the kind of relationship linking the words. If you are still arranging the 16 entries, color cannot be treated as a prediction of which words belong together. It describes the category once the grouping is established.

What is officially known—and not known—about each color

Color What the Help Center establishes What it does not establish
Yellow The easiest category of the four. A guaranteed category type, such as synonyms or common phrases.
Green One of the four category colors. Whether green is easier or harder than blue, or any fixed relationship type.
Blue One of the four category colors. Whether blue is easier or harder than green, or any fixed relationship type.
Purple The trickiest category of the four. A guaranteed wordplay, spelling or other specific category type.

This distinction matters because many informal explanations present a complete yellow-to-purple ladder or attach a standard category style to each color. The official wording supports the easiest and trickiest endpoints only. It does not provide a strict green-versus-blue ranking, and it does not say that a color always signals synonyms, titles, abbreviations, homophones or another recurring format.

Are the colors a fixed difficulty scale?

They are a four-level design cue, but the Help Center’s wording does not provide a numerical scale or a universal performance threshold for each color. “Easiest” and “trickiest” describe the relative categories in the puzzle rather than a published percentage of players who solve them, a required number of guesses or a measured time target.

That means a yellow group can still require careful thought, especially if its words are mixed among convincing alternatives. Purple identifies the category intended to be most difficult in that set of four, but it does not prove that every player will encounter it last. Your own knowledge, the order in which you notice patterns and the strength of the decoy categories can change your solving experience.

No population-level color statistics appear in the Help Center material described here. There is no official rate showing how often players solve yellow, green, blue or purple first, and no published average time or success percentage tied to each color. Treat the labels as puzzle feedback, not as a scientific ranking of player performance.

How many mistakes can you make in Connections?

The available Help Center description does not fully state the live-game mistake rules. It does not specify the number of incorrect submissions allowed, the exact effect of submitting an incorrect set, or the condition that ends a game. You should not infer a fixed allowance from the number four merely because the statistics display covers zero through four mistakes.

What the mistake histogram actually shows

The statistics section documents a “Mistake Histogram” for a player’s puzzle results across zero, one, two, three and four mistakes. In other words, it can display how your completed puzzles are distributed by mistake count in those ranges. That is a record of results, not a statement that the live board always permits four wrong guesses.

It also is not a population statistic. The description does not give the percentage of all players who make a particular number of mistakes, a year-specific average or a maximum that applies to every edition. A histogram showing your own outcomes cannot be converted into a rule about how many attempts remain on today’s board.

What an incorrect submission means for the official explanation

The source reviewed here does not document whether an incorrect group consumes one of a fixed number of chances, how the interface responds to a near-match, or whether the puzzle ends immediately after a particular failure. Because those mechanics are not stated, a precise “you get X mistakes” answer would go beyond the documented information.

If you need the current allowance for a specific version of the game, use the instructions or status information displayed in that version rather than relying on an unofficial color guide. Availability and interface details can change between the Games app, the website and other NYT platforms.

What Connections Bot adds to difficulty analysis

Connections Bot provides a separate, player-focused analysis for eligible subscribers. The Help Center says it can report how difficult that day’s puzzle was for other players, compare your performance, show how hard the individual categories were to find and the order in which players solved them, summarize common mistakes and break down guesses.

That analysis should not be confused with the category colors. A group’s color is a puzzle label assigned to the completed category. Bot information is comparative analysis about players’ experiences with the puzzle. One describes the board’s intended difficulty arrangement; the other examines solving behavior and relative performance.

Who is listed as eligible

The Help Center lists All Access, Home Delivery and Games subscribers as eligible for Connections Bot features. The page does not present Bot analysis as a requirement for playing the puzzle itself.

How to use the colors while solving

Because colors are attached to completed groups, they are most useful as feedback after you have identified a category. They should not be used as a shortcut for guessing what a word means.

1. Find the most specific relationship first

Scan the 16 words for a connection that is unusually precise. A group with one clear shared property is generally safer to test than a broad group based on a loose synonym. This approach respects the puzzle’s central trap: several words can fit more than one apparent category.

2. Test the whole set of four

Do not commit because two or three words look related. The required unit is four words, and the completed solution uses every entry exactly once. Ask whether the proposed theme explains all four members while leaving a coherent explanation for the remaining 12.

3. Recheck overlaps before submitting

If a word could belong to two groups, compare the alternatives. The Help Center explicitly says that words may fit multiple categories, so an attractive partial match is not enough. Look for the arrangement that produces four complete themes rather than the arrangement that merely creates one appealing trio.

4. Treat the color as a result, not a hint

Once a group is confirmed, its color tells you how that category ranks in difficulty within the puzzle. It does not reveal the theme of the next group. Do not assume that a remaining group must be purple because it feels like wordplay, or that a green group must follow a standard format; the official explanation does not support those rules.

5. Keep your own mistake record separate from the game rule

If your statistics show zero through four mistakes, read that display as a history of your completed puzzles. It can help you monitor consistency, but it does not establish the live allowance for a future board. Avoid using a personal histogram as proof that every puzzle has the same limit.

Where and when you can play

The Help Center describes Connections as free to play on NYT platforms. It lists the Games app, the NYT Connections website, NYTimes.com/theathletic and the News app as access points. The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone.

Signing in to an NYT account is recommended if you want progress retained across devices. Registration is not required to play, according to the same Help Center description. Subscription requirements can differ for additional analysis features such as Connections Bot, so playing the puzzle and accessing subscriber statistics are separate questions.

These access details are based on the New York Times Help Center page accessed October 13, 2026. If an app or site presents a different sign-in prompt or feature list, follow the current information in that product rather than assuming every platform has identical options.

Common misunderstandings about Connections colors

“Purple always means a particular kind of wordplay.”

Not according to the official explanation. Purple marks the trickiest category in that puzzle, but the Help Center does not define a permanent category type for it.

“Blue is officially harder than green.”

The reviewed Help Center wording does not rank the two middle colors. It names yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest, leaving the relative order of green and blue unspecified.

“Four mistakes are always allowed.”

The mistake histogram covers results from zero to four mistakes, but that is not the same as a documented live-game allowance. The source does not state the limit or game-ending condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The color tells me what to look for next.”

Colors are attached to completed groups as difficulty cues. The official description does not say that they identify synonyms, names, phrases, abbreviations or any other connection type in advance.
