What Do Running-Watch Metrics Like HRV and Training Load Mean?

HRV status is personal, training load is an estimate of exercise stress, and readiness combines multiple inputs. Learn what running-watch metrics can—and can’t—tell you.

HRV and training load are context for understanding how your body is responding to exercise—not universal scores that tell every runner exactly what to do. HRV status is generally judged against your own baseline; training load estimates exercise stress over time. Read either alongside recent training, sleep and how you feel, rather than making a training decision from one number.

What does HRV mean on a running watch?

Heart-rate variability (HRV) is the variation in the time between heartbeats. It is different from your heart rate: heart rate describes how many times your heart beats in a period, while HRV describes how the intervals between beats vary. A watch’s HRV status is an interpretation of measurements, not simply a direct reading of whether you are fit or unfit.

The important point is that the status is usually interpreted in relation to your own baseline. Garmin describes its “balanced” status as a 7-day HRV average that falls within your personal baseline range. That is why a number that looks high or low compared with another runner—or a number from a different watch—does not by itself establish whether your HRV is good. Garmin’s description is on its Training Readiness page.

A watch may need consistent wear before it can establish a useful range. COROS says five nights of watch wear are needed to establish an overnight HRV normal range. Garmin describes a 7-day average in its status explanation. These are different manufacturer-specific feature details, not a universal number of nights or days required by every device. If your watch is new, you have worn it inconsistently, or the app says it is still learning your baseline, treat the status cautiously until it has enough data. COROS explains its feature in Daily Features.

What a changing or unbalanced status can—and cannot—tell you

Garmin says an unbalanced HRV status may point to inadequate recovery, excessive workload, alcohol consumption, or the immune system fighting illness. These are possible explanations in Garmin’s interpretation, not diagnoses. A single reading cannot establish why your value changed, and the watch’s status does not prove that you are sick, recovered, or ready for a hard session.

Look for a trend over several days and put it beside what has been happening in your training, sleep, and day-to-day well-being. If the status changes after a demanding run, poor sleep, or feeling unwell, those details give you context to consider; they do not turn the watch reading into a medical explanation. Manufacturer feature descriptions do not establish a precise individual injury-risk prediction.

What is training load?

Training load is an estimate of the stress accumulated from exercise. It is intended to summarize the demands of activity over time rather than report a single workout’s distance or pace. A harder or longer workout can contribute differently from an easier or shorter one, but the exact inputs and calculation depend on the watch’s platform.

For example, COROS describes training load as a function of exercise time and intensity. Garmin separates several load concepts: exercise load, acute load, chronic load, and load ratio. Garmin’s support page explains that Training Load consists of these components and can be viewed through Training Status or Training Readiness on compatible watches. Its feature definitions are available in What Is Training Load on My Garmin Device?

Do not treat one company’s score, component names, time windows, or calculations as an industry-wide formula. Scores with similar names on different platforms are not automatically interchangeable. The available manufacturer explanations describe how their own features work; they do not establish a controlled comparison of accuracy between Garmin and COROS.

Garmin’s load terms

  • Exercise load: the load associated with exercise. Garmin notes that heart-rate data is needed for exercise-load calculation in some cases; requirements can depend on the device and feature.
  • Acute load: a Garmin load component representing recent training. Garmin says acute-load effects expire over a 10-day period. Its July 16, 2026 explanation of Training Status likewise describes exercise load’s impact as fading and being gone after 10 days. This is Garmin’s feature behavior, not a universal rule for how every training-load calculation decays.
  • Chronic load and load ratio: additional components Garmin includes in Training Load. The sources identify these components but do not provide a universal equation that runners can apply across watch brands.

Garmin’s Training Status explanation describes exercise load as the toll exercise takes over time and explains the 10-day fading behavior. The number is a feature calculation, not a direct measurement of every aspect of fatigue or recovery.

How HRV, training load, readiness and status differ

These labels are related, but they are not synonyms. HRV is one input a watch may interpret against your baseline. Training load estimates exercise stress across time. Readiness and training status are broader summaries that may combine multiple inputs, and their algorithms and availability depend on the manufacturer and compatible device.

Metric or label What it represents What to remember
HRV Variation in the time between heartbeats Status is commonly interpreted against a personal baseline, not a universal target.
Training load An estimate of exercise stress over time Components, inputs, and time windows can differ by manufacturer.
Training readiness Garmin summary using last night’s sleep score, HRV status, acute training load, and stress history It is a multi-input summary, not another name for HRV.
Training status A manufacturer’s summary of training-related information Garmin connects VO2 max changes with training volume and composition; compatible devices may also include HRV status.

Garmin describes the inputs to its Training Readiness feature on its official feature page. Its Training Status explanation discusses VO2 max changes in relation to training volume and composition and says HRV status may be included on compatible devices. Those are Garmin-specific descriptions; they do not define what every brand means by “readiness” or “status.”

How to use the metrics when deciding what to do

Use the dashboard as one source of context, not as an automatic command to run or rest. A low or changing HRV status can be a reason to review your recent training and how you feel, but one score alone cannot settle the decision. The same is true of a high readiness label: it is not a guarantee that you should do a hard workout.

  • As soon as you wake up, get your morning report with an overview of your sleep, recovery and training outlook alongside weather and HRV status (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  1. Check whether your baseline is established. If the watch is still collecting data, or you have not worn it consistently, do not treat the status as a reliable personal comparison yet. Garmin’s explanation refers to a 7-day average; COROS says five nights are needed for its overnight normal range.
  2. Look at the trend rather than one reading. Notice whether HRV status or load has changed over several days. Avoid interpreting a single change as proof of a particular cause.
  3. Review recent exercise. Consider the amount and intensity of your recent training alongside the load estimate. A watch’s summary is a calculation; your training history supplies context for understanding it.
  4. Include sleep and subjective well-being. Ask how you slept and whether you feel unusually tired or unwell. Garmin’s readiness summary itself includes sleep, HRV, acute load, and stress history, while the watch cannot establish a diagnosis from those inputs.
  5. Make the decision using the whole picture. If the metrics and how you feel point in different directions, do not let one score decide for you. Choose a session appropriate to your circumstances, or seek qualified medical advice for health concerns rather than relying on a watch status.

This approach does not assign a universal HRV threshold or a formula for converting load into a workout. The documented features do not establish one that applies to every runner. It instead avoids mistaking a proprietary summary for a direct instruction or clinical result.

Why two watches may show different training metrics

Manufacturers may use different labels, baselines, inputs, and time windows. Garmin’s documented load framework includes exercise load, acute load, chronic load, and load ratio, while COROS describes training load in terms of exercise time and intensity. Garmin’s HRV status explanation references a 7-day average against a personal baseline; COROS describes five nights to establish its overnight normal range. These specifics help explain their own features, but do not make the two platforms directly comparable.

Feature support also varies by model. Garmin says most devices use a VO2 max estimate or HRV status together with acute-load data for Training Status, and its support documentation notes that heart-rate data is needed for exercise-load calculation in some cases. Garmin makes its compatibility and feature notes available in What Is the Training Status Feature on My Garmin Device? COROS documents its fitness metrics separately in Fitness Metrics. Check the manual and companion app for your exact model rather than assuming that another watch with a similar label uses the same method.

For Garmin’s Forerunner 265 Series specifically, the owner’s manual has a Training Status section; that device-specific documentation is not evidence that every Garmin model supports identical features. See the Forerunner 265 Series Owner’s Manual.

What the numbers cannot establish

  • A watch status cannot diagnose illness or explain the cause of an HRV change.
  • A load score does not show every dimension of fatigue, recovery, or readiness.
  • One reading does not predict an individual injury with precision.
  • Garmin and COROS feature descriptions do not establish that one platform’s metric is more accurate than another’s.
  • A feature’s presence, calculation, and required sensor data can vary by model, so verify support for the watch you own.

These limits do not make the metrics useless. They define their proper role: a way to notice patterns and organize training context, not a replacement for your own judgment, a coach’s guidance, or medical evaluation when appropriate.
