Retraction controls filament pullback during nozzle travel, temperature controls how hot the filament is melted, and flow controls how much filament is extruded. They affect different parts of printing, but their symptoms can overlap: stringing, gaps, or weak layers may have more than one cause. Make changes against the correct printer and filament profile, and adjust one relevant setting at a time.
What each slicer setting changes
Retraction: pull filament back during travel
When the nozzle finishes one printed area and travels to another without printing, retraction briefly pulls filament back. Extrusion resumes after the move. The goal is to limit oozing and strings between printed areas. In PrusaSlicer, retraction controls are under Printer Settings → Extruder 1; other slicers may use different names or locations. Prusa’s stringing and oozing guide explains these controls.

- Retraction length is how much filament is pulled back.
- Retraction speed is how quickly the extruder motor pulls it back. More speed may help stringing, but excessive speed can make the motor skip steps.
- Lift Z raises the nozzle during travel. Reducing it may help stringing; disabling it can let the nozzle hit the print.
- Minimum travel after retraction affects how often retraction occurs, trading print time against ooze and stringing.
Values depend on the extruder, printer profile, and filament. For example, Prusa lists a maximum of 2 mm for several of its direct-drive models and a 3.2 mm default for its Bowden MINI/MINI+ profile. Those examples are not universal settings.

Nozzle temperature determines how much heat is used to melt and extrude the selected filament. It influences flow and layer adhesion. A setting that is too high can contribute to stringing; one that is too low can contribute to cracking or layer separation. Neither symptom proves temperature is the only cause. See Prusa’s stringing guidance and its guide to layer separation and cracking.

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Prusa gives 195–220°C as an example range for PLA in its layer-separation guide and suggests trying 5°C increments in that troubleshooting context. These are manufacturer examples, not a universal PLA prescription: follow the filament maker’s guidance and use a profile compatible with your printer, nozzle, and material.
Flow: set the amount of filament extruded
Flow determines how much filament the printer extrudes relative to the slicer’s planned amount. PrusaSlicer calls its filament-level setting Extrusion Multiplier. Prusa describes firmware flow and the slicer multiplier as separate controls that combine: “Total flow rate = Flow multiplier in firmware (M221) x Extrusion multiplier in PrusaSlicer.” See Prusa’s extrusion multiplier calibration guide.

- Too much flow can leave scarring on bottom layers or excess material on top surfaces.
- Too little flow can leave gaps between layer lines or perimeters.
- In Prusa’s layer-separation troubleshooting, increasing flow can add material and strengthen a bond, but that does not make flow a general fix for weak layers.
Prusa notes that the ideal extrusion multiplier can vary by material, color, and spool. Its calibration guide describes visual and precise methods, calls calibration advanced, and says a new factory printer ordinarily does not need it. In its particular visual procedure, it recommends small 1–2% adjustments; do not treat that as a universal calibration recipe.

How to distinguish the settings
| Setting | What it changes | Symptoms it may help investigate | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retraction | Filament pullback and return during non-printing travel | Strings or ooze between printed areas | Length and speed depend on extruder design, printer, and material; excessive speed can cause motor skipping. |
| Temperature | Nozzle heat for the selected filament | Stringing if too high; weak adhesion or layer separation if too low | Use the filament maker’s guidance and a compatible profile. Prusa’s PLA range is an example, not a universal setting. |
| Flow / extrusion multiplier | Amount of filament extruded relative to the slicer plan | Excess material or scarring if high; gaps between lines if low | Check material, profile, and hardware before compensating with flow. |
The controls can produce similar-looking defects. Prusa identifies high printing temperature and incorrect retraction as possible contributors to stringing, and also names filament moisture and nozzle or hotend issues. Gaps or weak layers likewise do not automatically mean flow is too low; temperature, profile, nozzle, and printer condition can matter.

A safe troubleshooting order
- Check the profile first. Confirm the slicer is set for the actual printer, filament type, and nozzle size. Prusa recommends starting with stock profiles tailored to those choices. Its extrusion multiplier guide and under-extrusion guide discuss profile settings.
- Check the filament’s temperature guidance. Use the matching material profile and the filament maker’s recommended range; the PLA figures above are only Prusa examples.
- Change one relevant control in small steps. For stringing, consider retraction and temperature together, while also checking for moisture or nozzle cleanliness. Do not increase retraction without regard to the extruder design.
- Investigate flow only when the print symptoms support it. Look for excess material or gaps, then consider whether calibration is warranted. Prusa’s advanced guide covers both visual and precise methods, the latter using a caliper or micrometer.
- If adjustments do not help, reassess the profile and machine. Prusa notes that profiles determine temperature, speeds, and extrusion amounts; printer setup and mechanical causes can also lead to under-extrusion.
