Power-cord markings answer different questions: voltage and current ratings describe electrical limits, wire gauge identifies conductor size, cord-type letters describe construction or intended use, and certification marks indicate an evaluation under particular conditions. No single number or logo proves that a cord is suitable for every appliance or environment. Choose by matching the cord’s complete markings, length, plug configuration, and intended setting to the appliance instructions—and verify that any certification applies to the cord assembly you are buying.
First, identify what kind of cord you have
“Power cord” can mean several products. Extension cords are not the same as detachable power-supply cords, appliance cords, power strips, taps, or adapter cords supplied with outdoor tools. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) defines an extension cord as a factory-assembled flexible cord with an attachment plug or current tap at one end and a cord connector at the other. Its extension-cord guidance does not cover the other products just listed, so do not assume that every rule for extension cords applies to every cord that carries power.

The explanations below focus primarily on flexible cords and extension cords. For another product type, use the markings and instructions supplied for that product rather than treating it as an extension cord.

What the markings tell you—and what they do not
A cord’s tag, jacket, or packaging may show several distinct specifications. Read the complete marking and the manufacturer’s instructions; a voltage figure, a gauge number, or a single letter is not a complete suitability check.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Voltage rating: The voltage rating identifies the voltage for which the cord is rated. It does not, by itself, tell you the cord’s current capacity or whether it is right for a particular appliance.
- Current or service rating: This indicates the cord’s rated service or current limits. Compare it with the appliance requirements and any instructions on the cord. Do not infer a cord’s allowable load from gauge alone.
- Conductor size and count: The marking identifies the conductor size and number of conductors. For AWG size, a lower number means a larger conductor. The number of conductors is a separate piece of information from their size.
- Type designation: Letter codes describe features of the cord’s construction or intended service. They must be read as a complete designation, not as a standalone guarantee of suitability.
- Environmental and construction details: Look for markings that identify outdoor use or other relevant characteristics, and check that the cord’s plug and connector match the application.
- Certification information: A mark or label may identify an evaluation or certification. Its meaning depends on the certification program, product, and conditions covered; a mark on one component does not necessarily cover the complete cord assembly.
UL Solutions’ wire-and-cable guidance advises consulting the markings and the guide for the relevant product category to determine ratings and limitations. Flexible-cord marking requirements and practices are not identical for every consumer cord. OSHA notes that flexible-cord service ratings derive from the National Electrical Code and, in the workplace context it describes, are marked approximately every foot along the cord. That workplace detail should not be taken to mean every household power cord has identical marking requirements.
What do the letters on an extension cord mean?
Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) gives these common letter meanings for cord designations. Treat them as clues to construction or use, then check the full marking and the product instructions.
| Letter | Meaning in ESFI’s guidance | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| S | General use | It does not identify every other rating or limitation; read the rest of the designation. |
| W | Outdoor use | Check the complete cord marking and ensure the cord is appropriate for the intended outdoor application. |
| J | Standard 300-volt insulation | Use this as one part of the designation, not a substitute for checking the appliance and cord ratings. |
| T | Vinyl thermoplastic | This describes a cord material characteristic, not the cord’s load suitability by itself. |
| P | Parallel-wire construction | It describes construction; it does not, on its own, establish outdoor suitability or current capacity. |
| O | Oil resistance | It identifies a material characteristic; confirm that all other conditions and ratings fit the application. |
| E | TPE | It identifies a material characteristic, not a complete use recommendation. |
For example, seeing a W does not tell you the cord’s gauge, length, current rating, or whether the certification label covers its entire assembly. The same principle applies to every letter: interpret the whole marking together.

How wire gauge, length, and load work together
AWG means American Wire Gauge, a designation for conductor size. The counterintuitive part is that a smaller AWG number indicates a larger conductor. But gauge is only one factor in a cord’s suitability: length and the appliance load matter too. ESFI’s published extension-cord guidance gives different amperage ranges at different lengths, as shown below.
| Extension-cord length in ESFI guidance | Gauge and stated amperage range |
|---|---|
| 25–50 feet | 16 gauge: 1–13 amps 14 gauge: 14–15 amps 12–10 gauge: 16–20 amps |
| 100 feet | 16 gauge: 1–10 amps 14 gauge: 11–13 amps 12 gauge: 14–15 amps 10 gauge: 16–20 amps |
| 150 feet | 14 gauge: 1–7 amps 12 gauge: 8–10 amps 10 gauge: 11–15 amps |
These are ESFI’s guidance ranges for the listed extension-cord lengths, not a universal rule for every cord, appliance, or installation and not the result of an independent test described here. Use the cord and appliance markings and manufacturer instructions to make the final match. If the load falls outside the listed range for a cord’s gauge and length, do not assume that the cord is adequate; choose a cord whose stated ratings and instructions support the application.
A useful selection check is to start with the appliance rather than the cord rack: identify the appliance’s requirements, then find a cord with a compatible voltage and current or service rating, appropriate conductor size for its length and load, and the correct plug and connector configuration. A larger conductor does not remove the need to check ratings, construction, and intended use.

How UL certification marks differ
UL Solutions describes several marks with different meanings. These definitions are UL’s descriptions of its own marks; they should not be generalized to marks issued by other certification bodies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| UL mark | UL’s stated meaning | What a reader should check |
|---|---|---|
| Listed | Evaluation for reasonably foreseeable safety-related hazards for the product’s intended use | Confirm the mark is for the product and intended use in question. |
| Classified | Evaluation addressing specific risks or conditions | Check which risks or conditions are covered; do not assume it means evaluation for every use. |
| Certified | An enhanced mark that can bundle multiple certifications | Verify the product details and scope rather than inferring coverage from the word alone. |
| Verified | Performance verification programs | Understand what performance program applies to the product. |
For wire and cable, UL’s guide says the complete Listing Mark appears on a tag attached to the reel or smallest unit container. It includes the UL symbol, the word “LISTED,” a serial number, and the product or category name. The guide also directs users to the markings associated with the wire and the applicable category guide to determine ratings and limitations. UL’s industry guidance recommends checking the certification tag and verifying its details in Product iQ.
ESFI recommends choosing cords approved by an independent testing laboratory and names UL, Intertek (ETL), and CSA as examples. A mark should be matched to the product and its intended use, not treated as a generic sign that any cord can handle any load or setting.

Why certification of a part may not certify the whole cord
Check what product the certification actually identifies. OSHA’s June 12, 1991 interpretation concerns extension cords used at workplaces covered by its requirements. It says the extension cord, or cord set, must be approved as an assembly by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). A label on a plug or receptacle component alone does not demonstrate that the assembled extension cord has been approved.
This is an important scope distinction: OSHA’s workplace interpretation should not be presented as a universal household rule. For a consumer purchase, use the complete cord’s certification information, product labeling, and instructions to verify what has been evaluated. Do not assume that a certified part proves the rating or certification status of a finished cord set.
Indoor and outdoor extension cords are not interchangeable by assumption
CPSC’s extension-cord guidance identifies readily observable safety characteristics, with the applicable additional characteristic depending on cord type. Its guidance lists minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, proper polarization, and proper continuity for general-use indoor and outdoor extension cords. It identifies outlet covers for specified two-wire indoor cords and jacketed cords for outdoor cords.

CPSC’s Extension Cords Business Guidance, dated November 18, 2015, explains that extension cords lacking one or more applicable characteristics present a risk of electric shock or fire and constitute a substantial product hazard under the rule. The agency’s final rule on the substantial-product-hazard list was dated July 21, 2015, and became effective August 26, 2015. These characteristics are not a replacement for checking the cord’s ratings, markings, and instructions; they describe observable features relevant to the specified cord type.
For outdoor use, do not infer outdoor suitability just because a cord looks sturdy or because a component bears a mark. Check the complete cord’s markings and instructions for the intended environment. Similarly, an indoor cord should not be assumed to have the jacket construction CPSC identifies for outdoor extension cords.
A step-by-step way to choose and check a cord
- Identify the product category. Confirm whether you are choosing an extension cord, appliance cord, detachable supply cord, or another product. Apply extension-cord guidance only when it is actually an extension cord.
- Read the appliance instructions and requirements. Note the required electrical ratings and the plug configuration. Do not estimate the load from the appliance’s appearance or from the cord’s gauge alone.
- Choose the intended environment. Decide whether the cord will be used indoors or outdoors, then check the cord type and jacket markings for that use.
- Match gauge and length to load. Use the cord markings and manufacturer directions, and consider ESFI’s length-specific guidance as a selection reference. Remember that a lower AWG number means a larger conductor.
- Compare the complete ratings. Check voltage, current or service rating, gauge, length, conductor count, type designation, and plug/connector fit as applicable. A match on only one item is not enough.
- Verify the certification scope. Inspect the tag or label for the product identity and certification information. Where UL certification is claimed, UL recommends checking the tag and verifying details in Product iQ. Make sure the evidence concerns the complete relevant product, not just a plug or receptacle component.
- Inspect the cord’s observable characteristics. For an extension cord, check that applicable features such as strain relief, polarization, continuity, and the appropriate indoor or outdoor construction are present.
Use an extension cord as a temporary solution
ESFI advises that an extension cord is temporary and is not meant to become a long-term extension of household wiring. Plan for a suitable permanent electrical arrangement rather than relying on a cord as a lasting substitute. ESFI also advises against removing a ground pin or forcing a plug into an outlet. If the plug does not fit, or the cord’s grounding arrangement does not match the appliance and outlet, stop and resolve the mismatch rather than modifying the cord.
When comparing two cords, consider the environment, gauge, length, electrical ratings, grounding and plug configuration, type and jacket markings, and certification coverage together. The cord with the most prominent rating or the lowest gauge number is not automatically the right one; the correct choice is the cord whose complete specifications and instructions fit the appliance and the intended use.
