IBM is the name of a company; Mac refers to Apple’s Macintosh computers. In the common phrase “PC or Mac,” IBM often stands for the IBM PC and the IBM-compatible computer tradition, while Mac means an Apple Macintosh. The terms are not equivalent kinds of names: one is a company name that also became shorthand for a historic PC platform, and the other is Apple’s computer-line name.
What does IBM mean?
IBM stands for International Business Machines. In computer conversations, however, people may use “IBM” as shorthand for the IBM PC or for IBM-compatible personal computers.

IBM introduced its 5150 Personal Computer in August 1981. IBM says the computer’s architecture became a standard and that “PC became a generic term.” Its PC division was later sold to Lenovo, with the sale completed in 2005. So “IBM PC” is a historical product and platform reference, not an indication that IBM still sells that division’s computers. IBM’s history of the IBM PC

Why do people say “PC or Mac”?
In everyday computer terminology, “PC” often means an IBM-compatible computer, while “Mac” means an Apple Macintosh. The wording reflects the history of IBM’s PC architecture and the Macintosh name; it does not mean IBM and Apple are two equivalent current computer makers.
“PC” can also mean “personal computer,” a broader category that includes personal computers beyond the IBM-compatible tradition. The intended meaning depends on context: in “PC or Mac,” it commonly names one side of a familiar platform distinction; in a general description, it can refer to personal computers as a whole.

It depends on what “PC” means in the conversation. If it means any personal computer, a Mac is a personal computer. If “PC” is being used colloquially to mean an IBM-compatible computer, speakers are distinguishing that category from a Mac.
