What do armadillos eat in Minecraft?
The armadillo’s food item is the Spider Eye. This is a specific Minecraft item, not a general category of meat, plants, or hostile-mob drops. Holding a Spider Eye makes an eligible armadillo interested in you, allowing you to lead it toward a pen or breeding area.
Spider Eyes have three practical uses with armadillos:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Tempting: an unrolled armadillo follows a player holding a Spider Eye within the normal temptation range.
- Breeding: feeding one Spider Eye to each of two adult armadillos puts them into love mode and produces a baby.
- Growing: feeding Spider Eyes to a baby armadillo shortens the time until it becomes an adult.
The item must be named Spider Eye in the game’s inventory. Other foods do not substitute for it, and an armadillo does not eat Spider Eyes while it is rolled up.
How to get Spider Eyes
Spider Eyes are commonly obtained by defeating spiders and cave spiders. They can also appear through other normal game-generation and loot mechanics, depending on your world and edition. You do not need a special armadillo-related item: collect Spider Eyes before searching for the animals so you can attract, breed, or raise them as soon as you find them.

Keep the eyes in your hotbar and select them before approaching. If you are carrying another item, the armadillos will not react as though you are offering food.
How do you breed armadillos?
Breeding requires two adult, unrolled armadillos and at least two Spider Eyes. One eye is consumed for each adult. The adults then enter love mode and create a baby armadillo.
- Find two adults. Search Savanna or Badlands areas and confirm that both animals are full-grown rather than babies.
- Prepare a safe enclosure. A fenced pen or other barrier prevents the animals from wandering while you work. Leave enough room for both adults and the baby.
- Approach without triggering defense. Do not sprint close to them, ride a mount or vehicle beside them, or bring nearby undead mobs into the area. Any of these threats can make an armadillo roll up.
- Hold a Spider Eye. Select the Spider Eye in your hotbar. Unrolled armadillos should turn toward you and follow as you lead them into the enclosure.
- Feed the first adult. Use the normal interaction control for your edition while aiming at the adult armadillo. One Spider Eye is used.
- Feed the second adult. Give the other adult one Spider Eye. Both animals enter love mode and produce a baby.
- Wait for the breeding cooldown. After breeding, the adults cannot immediately breed again. The game applies a cooldown; its exact duration is not specified in the release documentation, so wait until the adults can accept food for breeding again.
- Grow the baby if desired. Feed Spider Eyes to the baby repeatedly when you want it to mature sooner. Each feeding advances its growth rather than creating another baby.
What happens after breeding?
The two adults remain in the enclosure with their new baby. The baby is not a tamed companion and does not become linked to the player. It follows normal armadillo behavior, including rolling up when it detects a qualifying threat. Protect the pen from hostile mobs and accidental player activity if you want the baby to remain safe.

Breeding does not create an unlimited supply of Spider Eyes. Plan your spider-hunting trips around the number of adults you want to breed and the amount of baby growth you want to accelerate.
Why will an armadillo not eat a Spider Eye?
The usual explanation is that the armadillo is rolled up. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes describe the behavior directly: “When an Armadillo is rolled up: It does not walk, cannot eat, and will not be tempted by food.” A rolled-up armadillo ignores a Spider Eye even when you are holding it directly in front of the mob.
How to make it unroll
- Move away from the armadillo instead of repeatedly clicking it.
- Remove or avoid the trigger: stop sprinting, dismount a nearby mount or vehicle, and deal with nearby undead mobs.
- Wait for the armadillo to determine that the threat has left.
- When it unrolls and begins walking, hold the Spider Eye again and try feeding or tempting it.
An armadillo can also roll up after being hurt. Avoid hitting it, damaging it with environmental hazards, or allowing hostile mobs to attack it. If it has just taken damage, give it time to return to its normal state before attempting to breed.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Wrong item: verify that the selected item is a Spider Eye, not another spider drop or food.
- Defensive state: look for the rolled-up posture. A rolled-up armadillo cannot eat.
- Adult requirement: only adults can breed. Babies can eat Spider Eyes for growth but cannot produce a baby.
- Two-mob requirement: breeding needs two adults, with one Spider Eye for each.
- Cooldown: recently bred adults need time before they can breed again.
- Edition or version: the mechanics belong to the Armored Paws releases. Confirm that your Java or Bedrock version includes armadillos.
- Interaction distance: stand close enough for the normal mob-interaction range and aim at the armadillo rather than a fence or block.
What makes an armadillo roll up?
Armadillos use their rolled-up state as defense. They can roll up when hurt, when undead mobs are nearby, or when they detect a player sprinting or a player riding nearby. A mount or vehicle can therefore cause the problem even when the player is not sprinting on foot.
While rolled up, an armadillo does not walk, cannot eat, and cannot be tempted. It also takes less damage and repels spiders. These defensive effects are useful for survival but inconvenient when you are trying to move or breed the animals.

Keeping a breeding pen calm
- Walk rather than sprint near the enclosure.
- Park horses, boats, minecarts, and other vehicles away from the pen.
- Light the area and secure its perimeter so undead mobs cannot approach.
- Use a fence, wall, or other barrier to keep the armadillos from wandering into hazards.
- Do not strike the adults while trying to position them.
If the animals repeatedly roll up, solve the environmental trigger first. More Spider Eyes will not override the defensive state.
Where do armadillos spawn?
Official release documentation lists Savanna and Badlands as armadillo spawning habitats. Search those biomes for naturally generated adults and babies, then lead the animals to a protected base with Spider Eyes.
Biome names and terrain can vary with the world seed, and generation differs between Java and Bedrock. If you are searching in another biome, do not assume an armadillo will appear there simply because the terrain looks dry. Check that the area is identified as Savanna or Badlands in your edition’s biome display.
A practical search plan
- Carry several Spider Eyes, blocks for a temporary pen, lighting, and a way to mark your route.
- Explore Savanna and Badlands regions during normal travel rather than waiting in an unrelated biome.
- When you see one armadillo, scan the surrounding area for a second adult before transporting the first.
- Build a small secure enclosure at the discovery site if the journey home is long.
- Walk the animals with a Spider Eye after they have unrolled, or transport them using your normal mob-moving method while avoiding threats.
The release notes establish the listed habitats but do not provide a universal spawn-rate number. Your world seed, local terrain, and other spawning conditions affect how quickly you encounter them.

Passive, time-based collection
Leaving armadillos in a safe enclosure allows scutes to appear over time. This approach requires little interaction after the pen is built. It suits a player who wants a continuing supply while working on other projects, but it depends on waiting and protecting the animals.
Active brushing
Brushing is the hands-on option. Bring a Brush, approach an unrolled armadillo safely, and use the Brush on it. You must reach the mob directly, so a cramped pen, hostile mobs, sprinting, or a nearby mount can make the process awkward. Keep the area calm and avoid damaging the armadillo.
| Scute method | What you do | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive collection | Keep armadillos in a secure enclosure and wait for scutes over time. | Low ongoing interaction. | Requires time and a safe pen; the release documentation does not state a drop-rate figure. |
| Brushing | Use a Brush directly on an accessible armadillo. | Active control over collection attempts. | Requires a Brush and close access while the animal is unrolled. |
Using scutes for wolf armor
Wolf armor is the major utility associated with armadillo scutes. If your goal is protecting a tamed wolf, establish the armadillo enclosure first, then choose passive collection, brushing, or both. Armadillos themselves remain wild; scutes do not change their behavior toward the player.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you tame an armadillo?
No. Minecraft armadillos cannot be tamed. A Spider Eye attracts them and enables breeding, but it does not make an armadillo your pet, assign ownership, or create a permanent follow relationship. Keep them in a fenced or walled enclosure if you want them at your base.
They can still be useful as a managed resource mob. You can breed a population, raise babies with Spider Eyes, collect scutes, and build a dedicated habitat without taming any individual armadillo.

Java and Bedrock version requirements
Armadillo mechanics arrived in the Armored Paws release family. The relevant release identifiers are Java Edition 1.20.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.80.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Edition | Release context | Mechanics covered here |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 1.20.5, Armored Paws release family | Spider Eye feeding, breeding adults, baby growth, rolled-up behavior, Savanna and Badlands habitat, scutes, and wolf armor. |
| Bedrock Edition | 1.20.80, Armored Paws release family | The same core armadillo food and breeding workflow, subject to the current Bedrock version’s implementation. |
If you play a later release, check that version’s Java or Bedrock notes before relying on a behavior that may have changed. If you play an earlier release, armadillos may simply be unavailable. Marketplace add-ons and custom servers can also alter mob behavior, so test on the server or pack configuration you actually use.
Real armadillos versus Minecraft armadillos
Minecraft’s armadillo diet is a game mechanic: Spider Eyes are the item used to tempt and breed them. Real armadillos have a different biology and diet. Do not use the in-game food rule as advice for feeding a real animal, and do not infer real-world behavior from the Minecraft mob.
A compact breeding and care routine
For a reliable armadillo setup, use this sequence:
- Locate Savanna or Badlands terrain and find two adult armadillos.
- Collect at least two Spider Eyes before attempting transport.
- Build a secure, lit pen at your base or near the discovery site.
- Walk instead of sprinting as you bring the animals in, and keep mounts and undead mobs away.
- Wait for both animals to unroll.
- Hold a Spider Eye and place each adult in the pen.
- Feed one Spider Eye to each adult to produce a baby.
- Allow the adults’ breeding cooldown to pass before trying again.
- Feed Spider Eyes to the baby only when faster growth is worth spending the extra items.
- Collect scutes passively over time, brush the armadillos when you need a more active method, and use the scutes for wolf armor.
The most important diagnostic rule is simple: if an armadillo is rolled up, stop trying to feed it and remove the nearby threat. Once it unrolls, Spider Eyes work for attraction, breeding, and baby growth.
