What Did Supermicro’s $90,000 Gaudi 2 Server Promotion Include?

The reported $90,000 price applied to a specific Supermicro Gaudi 2 configuration in May 2024. Here’s what the 8U platform included and what buyers should verify today.

In May 2024, ServeTheHome reported that Supermicro was promoting a complete Gaudi 2 AI server configuration, model SYS-820GH-TNR2-01, for $90,000. That is a historical promotional price—not a current quote. Supermicro still documents the underlying SYS-820GH-TNR2 platform, but the reviewed sources do not establish whether the exact promotional configuration is available now or what it would cost today.

What did the reported $90,000 configuration include?

ServeTheHome’s May 17, 2024 report identified the promoted configuration as Supermicro SYS-820GH-TNR2-01, a complete system built around eight Intel Gaudi 2 OAM accelerators. Supermicro’s August 2024 flyer also lists that configuration with eight Gaudi 2 HL-225H OAM cards and directs interested buyers to contact sales. The price was a promotion reported at that time, not a standing price or proof of present availability. ServeTheHome’s report and Supermicro’s flyer provide the historical details.

The complete system was customizable, and ServeTheHome noted that its price would change with selected options. Its estimates of the cost of other components were editorial analysis, not a verified bill of materials. The $90,000 figure therefore should not be treated as the price of every SYS-820GH-TNR2 configuration.

What is the SYS-820GH-TNR2 platform?

Supermicro describes the SYS-820GH-TNR2 as an 8U AI training platform supporting up to eight Gaudi 2 accelerators. Its host platform uses two 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and supports up to 8TB of DDR4 memory. These are platform limits; the exact processors, memory population, and other options depend on the ordered configuration. Supermicro’s product page lists the platform specifications.

Two networking layers serve different purposes

The networking figures describe separate parts of the system, not competing specifications. ServeTheHome reported 100GbE networking on the Gaudi 2 accelerators for inter-accelerator communication. Supermicro’s platform page lists six QSFP-DD 400GbE ports for scale-out networking—connections from the system to the wider cluster. The report also said the promoted configuration included a ConnectX-6 VPI network adapter. Port availability and included adapters should be confirmed for any quoted configuration rather than assumed from the platform’s maximum specifications.

How does the $90,000 figure compare with the accelerator price?

In a June 3, 2024 follow-up, ServeTheHome reported a $65,000 Intel list price for an eight-accelerator Gaudi 2 OAM UBB assembly. That is a historical price for the accelerator assembly, not a current quote for a complete server. It is useful context for understanding why the server promotion drew attention, but the two figures cover different things and dates; the $65,000 number does not establish the cost or value of the complete system. ServeTheHome’s follow-up gives the assembly-price context.

Is the Supermicro Gaudi 2 server still $90,000?

There is no confirmed current price for SYS-820GH-TNR2-01 in the cited material. Supermicro’s product page documents the SYS-820GH-TNR2 platform, while the historical flyer points prospective buyers to a sales representative. Neither is a current stock check or quote. Ask Supermicro or an authorized seller for availability, the exact accelerator and host configuration, included networking, service and delivery terms, and a current system price.

What should buyers compare with an H100 server?

The old promotion alone cannot show whether this Gaudi 2 system is a better buy than a particular NVIDIA H100 server. The cited sources do not provide a workload-complete, like-for-like benchmark for this exact configuration against a specified H100 system. Intel’s performance tables describe named systems, workloads, and software versions; results should not be generalized beyond those conditions. Intel’s Gaudi performance material is best read with its system and test details.

For a purchasing comparison, evaluate the same deployment scenario on both options:

  • Workload and software: Check support for the models, frameworks, and operations the team actually uses, plus the engineering effort to port and maintain them.
  • Measured results: Compare training or inference on the intended workload, with software versions, batch sizes, precision, and other test conditions stated.
  • Memory and connectivity: Assess accelerator memory capacity and bandwidth, communication within the server, and the scale-out network needed for the target cluster.
  • Deployment fit: Confirm power, cooling, rack space, service coverage, delivery timing, and the complete current system quote.

Without comparable tests and current quotes for the intended deployment, the historical $90,000 promotion cannot establish a performance-per-dollar winner.
