Fossils point to ferns, conifers, mosses, ginkgoes and cycads growing in a comparatively mild polar climate. But Antarctica was still at a high southern latitude, with dramatic seasonal changes in daylight, and the evidence does not let us picture every region or every dinosaur-era moment in exactly the same way.
What the Antarctic landscape looked like
The clearest picture comes from plant fossils in Mesozoic rocks, especially those of the Antarctic Peninsula, Alexander Island and the South Shetland Islands. Fossil wood, leaves, pollen and spores show that forests grew there. The British Antarctic Survey reconstructs communities that included pines and other conifers, ferns and mosses, as well as ginkgoes and cycads typical of the southern hemisphere.

Flowering plants appear later in the fossil record, around 100 million years ago; southern beech is among the plants identified by the British Antarctic Survey. These finds are evidence for particular places and periods, not proof that all of Antarctica had identical vegetation. British Antarctic Survey: Fossils from the Antarctic

Not by the continent-wide ice sheet that defines Antarctica today. During the Late Mesozoic, the Antarctic Peninsula was near 70° south, and its plant fossils point to a relatively warm, temperate climate. The British Antarctic Survey compares those plants with ones found in New Zealand and Tasmania today; it does not provide a reconstructed mean temperature for the dinosaur-bearing sites.

“Warm” did not mean nonpolar. At that latitude, daylight varied greatly by season, including long winter darkness and twilight conditions. A forest could therefore grow in a landscape that still experienced severe seasonal changes in light. Natural History Museum: Antarctic dinosaur fossil
Did dinosaurs live in Antarctica?
Yes. Dinosaur remains are known from the northern Antarctic Peninsula, although relatively few have been formally described. A notable addition came in a Natural History Museum report published on 29 June 2026: researchers identified a vertebra collected on James Ross Island during a British Antarctic Survey expedition in 1985 as a sauropod bone.

The fragment’s size and shape suggest Titanosauria, a group of long-necked sauropods, but it is too incomplete to identify the species. The reported estimate that the animal was six to seven metres long is tentative and could describe an immature dinosaur. The find therefore establishes the presence of a sauropod more securely than it establishes what species lived there or how common such dinosaurs were.

The bone was found in marine rocks with ammonites. Those fossils place the layer in the lower Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous. The museum suggests the bone may have reached the sea after the animal died, perhaps carried by a river; that is a plausible explanation, not an observed event. Antarctica’s place in the southern world
Antarctica was part of Gondwana, the ancient southern supercontinent. Gondwana began breaking apart around 130 million years ago, while links between Australia and Antarctica persisted until about 55 million years ago. The Antarctic Peninsula’s changing geography may have allowed animals to disperse among southern landmasses, but particular migration routes remain hypotheses rather than settled facts. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How certain is any dinosaur-era reconstruction?
A reconstruction of a forested Antarctic Peninsula is grounded in plant fossils, but it is not a single definitive view of the whole continent across the entire age of dinosaurs. The Mesozoic spans many millions of years, and landscapes, plants and continental connections changed over that time.

- Assemble a 26-inch-long, scientifically accurate scale model of a T. Rex skeleton!
- Learn about the anatomy of the T. Rex and lots of cool facts about dinosaurs, fossils, and life during the cretaceous period.
- Plastic pieces snap together easily and the included base allows for easy display of your built skeleton.
- Includes an 8-page, full-color descriptive manual.
- Well supported: plant fossils show that forests with ferns and conifers grew in parts of Antarctica; other recorded plants include mosses, ginkgoes, cycads and, later, flowering plants.
- Known but limited: dinosaur fossils confirm dinosaurs lived there, but finds are rare and often fragmentary.
- Still uncertain: the exact species, abundance and appearance of dinosaurs at a particular site are not established by the available fragments.
The sauropod vertebra illustrates both sides of the evidence: even one small fossil can add a significant animal group to the record, while leaving its species and life history unknown. Swedish Museum of Natural History
