The lasting grid impact comes mainly after the facility is energized: servers, cooling, and supporting systems draw power continuously. Whether that affects local bills, reliability, or emissions depends on the project’s actual load and the capacity and plans of the local grid—not on a global average.
How much electricity do data centers use?
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that data centers used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption. It reported that use had grown by around 12% per year over the preceding five years. A small worldwide share does not mean a small effect in every place: electricity demand is concentrated where facilities operate.

Two IEA outlooks illustrate how estimates can change as demand and forecasts are updated. The IEA’s 2025 base case projected data-center-related generation rising from 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh in 2030. A 2026 update reported that data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, from a 2025 level of 485 TWh, and projected consumption to reach 950 TWh by 2030. These are projections from different publication dates, not a single fixed forecast. The IEA’s 2025 demand analysis, its 2025 supply outlook, and its 2026 update set out those figures and scenarios.

| Data-center electricity use | About 415 TWh; around 1.5% of global electricity consumption | Global estimate for 2024, IEA, 2025 |
| Historical annual growth | Around 12% per year | Global data-center electricity use over the five years preceding the IEA’s 2025 analysis |

Why can a globally modest share matter locally?
A data center draws power at a particular location and time. If several facilities cluster in one area, or a substation or transmission corridor has little spare capacity, connecting new demand may be difficult even when there is enough electricity generation nationally or worldwide. The relevant question is whether the local network can deliver the facility’s load where and when it is needed.

Historical national examples show how much local concentration can matter: the IEA reported data centers accounted for 18% of Ireland’s electricity demand in 2022 and around 7% of Singapore’s national electricity use in 2020. Those figures describe specific places and years; they are not current estimates for those countries or a proxy for another community. The IEA’s July 2024 electricity update gives the historical comparisons.
The IEA’s 2025 analysis estimated that around 20% of data-center capacity planned for construction by 2030 could face delays from grid constraints. That is an estimate of potential delay risk, not a count of projects certain to be blocked or a statement that all requested capacity will be built. Connection queues can include proposals that change, are cancelled, or are reassessed. The IEA’s 2025 executive summary discusses this risk.

Construction activity is not the same as operating demand
“Construction” can mean the building work, but the enduring electricity demand generally begins when the facility is energized and operating. A data center combines IT equipment—servers, storage, and networking—with cooling, power conditioning, backup systems, grid connections, and other site infrastructure. UPS batteries and backup generators help maintain continuity during outages; the facility’s electricity use reflects both computing and the systems that support it. Consumption varies with equipment and efficiency. The IEA describes these components in its analysis of data-center electricity demand.
The figures above concern electricity use and demand associated with operating data centers. They do not establish how much electricity a particular construction site uses while the building is being built. Nor should a proposed or requested grid connection be treated as an energized load: project filings and connection status are needed to understand what is approved, committed, and actually operating.

Why can grid upgrades lag behind a data-center project?
Data centers can be built faster than major grid infrastructure can be planned and completed. In its 2026 grids analysis, the IEA gives a broad estimate of 1–3 years for data-center construction, compared with 5–15 years to plan, permit, and complete grid infrastructure. These are indicative timelines, not a schedule for any individual facility or utility. The gap can leave a project waiting for a connection or require interim measures while network work proceeds.
Connection delays can also reflect planning and regulatory processes and supply-chain constraints for energy equipment such as transformers. A queue entry is not proof that the requested capacity is funded, approved, or certain to come online. The IEA discusses timing, constraints, and approaches to connections in its 2026 grids analysis.

How might new electricity demand be supplied?
There is no single supply mix that applies to every data center. In its 2025 global outlook, the IEA projected that renewables would meet nearly half of additional data-center demand over the following five years. Fossil fuels also contribute in the near term, while nuclear power becomes increasingly relevant later in the decade. These are global scenario findings, not a description of the physical electricity reaching one facility.

Utilities and grid operators have several broad ways to respond to large new loads. Their suitability depends on local network conditions, regulation, costs, and who carries the risk if a connection or supply is constrained.
| Possible response | What it addresses | Questions to ask locally |
|---|---|---|
| Build or upgrade network infrastructure | Adds or expands the grid capability needed to deliver power to the area. | Which transmission lines, substations, or other upgrades are planned, when are they expected, and how are costs allocated? |
| Make better use of existing capacity | Can address constraints through improved use of the network already in place. | What capacity is actually available at the relevant location and times, and what limits remain? |
| Consider a non-firm connection | May allow a project to connect subject to limits or constraints rather than guaranteeing unrestricted service. | What conditions permit the grid operator to limit service, and who bears the operational and financial risk? |
| Encourage flexible demand | Can help align some electricity use with grid conditions rather than treating all demand as inflexible. | Which loads can shift or reduce, how often could that be required, and what happens when flexibility is unavailable? |
The IEA discusses these approaches in the context of connection constraints in its grids report. Their deployment time, reliability, cost allocation, and emissions effects depend on the particular project and local rules; the global analysis does not establish a universal best option.
What evidence answers the question for a particular community?
Global estimates explain why data-center demand is receiving attention, but they cannot determine a local project’s effect on electricity rates, reliability, or emissions. To assess a proposed or operating facility, look for current records from the relevant utility, grid operator, and regulator.
- Load: the project’s requested connection capacity, expected operating load, and expected timeline for energizing additional capacity. Keep requested capacity separate from load already connected and in use.
- Connection status: the interconnection application or agreement, conditions attached to service, and any public updates on queue status.
- Network plans: utility or grid-operator load forecasts and plans for substations, transmission, and other upgrades, including their expected timing.
- Cost and tariffs: applicable rate rules, who pays for project-specific and shared upgrades, and whether regulators have reviewed the allocation.
- Supply and emissions: local generation and grid-supply plans, plus the project’s energy contracts or certificates, without treating contractual claims as a substitute for physical supply information.
- Reliability: regulator or utility filings that address local capacity and reliability; a global data-center statistic alone cannot establish whether service to existing customers will become less reliable.
Without these local records, a precise claim that a specific data center will raise household bills, cause outages, or change community emissions is not established. The IEA’s global and historical figures are context, not a substitute for project-specific utility and regulatory evidence.
