Use a dedicated, accountable identity, start with no permitted actions, and add narrowly scoped tools and permissions. Require a person to approve consequential actions, log activity at the tool level, and test that access can be revoked. A prompt is not a security boundary: documents, emails, webpages, and tool outputs can contain malicious instructions.
Decide what the agent is allowed to do before connecting it
Write down the task, its owner, the approved data sources, the operating environment, and the tools the workflow needs. This gives you a concrete boundary to enforce and a baseline to revisit when the workflow changes. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for AI agents recommends a named owner or sponsor and explicit roles for each agent.

- Begin with no permitted actions, then allow only the capabilities required for the task.
- Keep unreviewed integrations, plugins, and cross-tenant or guest access disabled by default.
- Reassess the boundary when tools, data, prompts, memory, retrieval, policies, model providers, or the deployment environment materially change.
Limit data access to the task
Specify which repositories, records, and sensitivity levels the agent may access. Apply your organization’s data-classification and policy controls, and limit retained context or long-lived memory to what the workflow needs. OpenAI’s guidance on understanding prompt injections recommends limiting an agent’s access to only the data needed to complete its task.

Where the platform permits, scope access by resource, sensitivity boundary, and operation—for example, read versus write, export, or administration.

Give the agent its own identity and narrowly scoped permissions
Use a unique, lifecycle-managed identity for each agent or clearly bounded workflow, with a named owner and task-based roles. Avoid a shared account or broad credential that makes it difficult to tell which agent performed an action or to remove its access cleanly. Microsoft Security’s least-privilege guidance recommends treating each agent as a first-class principal with explicit roles, tightly scoped permissions, and a preconfigured tool set.
Review the identity’s combined permissions across connected systems. If an agent acts on behalf of a person, record that delegated user context where relevant; delegation should not silently grant the agent broader authority than the task requires.

Separate reading from writing, and gate consequential actions
Keep read-only work separate from write or remediation workflows where practical. Let the agent gather information or draft an action without giving it authority to execute that action automatically. For high-impact or hard-to-reverse operations, require deterministic human approval outside the agent’s own reasoning. Microsoft’s guidance for securing autonomous agentic AI systems covers authorization and human oversight as core controls.

Examples that warrant approval include sending messages outside the organization, deleting or exporting data, changing permissions, and other irreversible or consequential changes. Enforce approval and authorization in the systems that execute the action; an instruction in the agent’s prompt is not a substitute for downstream checks.

Treat retrieved content as untrusted
An agent may encounter malicious instructions inside an email, document, webpage, or tool response. Those instructions can try to redirect it to disclose information, access additional resources, or take actions beyond the user’s intent. Treat retrieved content and outputs from tools or other agents as untrusted input, and validate them at trust boundaries.
Prompt injection cannot be made safe simply by adding a warning to the prompt. OpenAI describes it as an evolving security challenge; limiting data access and reviewing consequential actions reduce exposure but do not guarantee that an agent will ignore malicious content. The OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet also identifies risks including tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, and misuse of high-impact actions. Test the system before production and after material changes to its prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers.

Log activity and prove you can revoke access
Keep records that let an administrator reconstruct what the agent was authorized to do and what it actually did. Logs should capture the agent identity, role and effective scope, tool and action, affected resource, authorization result, and delegated user or correlation context where relevant. A final chat transcript alone cannot show the full chain of tool use and authorization.
- Test disabling the agent and invalidating its tokens.
- Confirm that credential rotation and permission removal take effect in connected systems.
- Remove stale permissions and verify that downstream services enforce revocation.
Know who owns security in your deployment
Responsibility varies with how the agent is delivered. Microsoft’s shared responsibility model for AI agents is illustrative governance guidance, not a legal interpretation of a service agreement. Check the specific product and contract.

Across deployment types, organizations retain responsibility for data, identity and least privilege, action authorization, human oversight, and acceptable-use governance.
