AI robots need timely, trustworthy data with clear meaning—and a connection designed for the job. For reliable factory operation, define what the robot and its surrounding systems must observe, give those data stable identities and context, and decide what happens when communication is delayed or lost. A fast network alone cannot provide those guarantees.
What data should a factory robot provide?
Start with the robot’s task, not a target for collecting as much data as possible. Inspection, process optimization, and maintenance call for different observations. For each robot or motion-device system, agree on a data contract: what is exposed, what each value means, how it is timestamped, and which application will use it.

Identify the asset and its configuration
Give each robot and relevant device a stable identity. Record useful context such as manufacturer and model, controller and device relationships, and software or configuration revision. Without that context, an analytics system can mistake data from different robots—or different configurations of one robot—for equivalent observations. OPC UA represents information as typed objects, and its Robotics companion model covers motion-device systems. OPC UA overview and OPC UA for Robotics describe these models.

Separate operating state from safety functions
For supervision and analysis, useful state can include operating mode, controller state, enabled or fault status, and safety-related state made available for monitoring. A monitoring feed that reports a safety state is not, by itself, a safety function. Do not treat ordinary data communications or an AI application as a substitute for the robot’s engineered safety controls.

Collect task and process observations
Expose the measurements the use case needs: for example, relevant position or motion values, tool or process measurements, quality observations, and sensor inputs. Select signals with the robot integrator and process owner. High-rate data can create storage and network demands, so collect it when a defined task needs it rather than assuming every available value belongs in an AI pipeline.
Include events and condition signals
A current value is often hard to interpret without knowing what happened before it. Time-stamped alarms, state changes, operator-relevant events, and historical measurements can supply that context. For condition monitoring, OPC UA for Robotics identifies motor temperature, load, and operating time as example parameters. OPC UA also supports access to current and historical data, alarms, and events. OPC UA overview and OPC UA for Robotics
Agree on data quality metadata
As an implementation practice, agree how producers and consumers handle timestamps and time synchronization, units, quality or status indicators, missing values, and data provenance. These details help prevent a plausible-looking value from being interpreted without its limits or origin. There is no single universal metadata checklist established by the cited standards; specify what the particular application requires.

How should robots connect to factory and enterprise systems?
Use structured interfaces, and verify what the product implements
OPC UA is a platform-independent architecture for exchanging information between industrial systems. It supports client-server and publisher-subscriber communication patterns and can represent current and historical values, alarms, and events. The Robotics companion specification adds a model for robot and motion-device systems; OPC UA Field Level Communications extends the framework toward field devices, profiles, interoperability, and time-sensitive networking (TSN). See the OPC UA overview, OPC UA for Robotics, and OPC UA for Factory Automation.
A standard does not mean every controller exposes the same fields or implements every capability. Before procurement, check the supported profile and specification version, which required values and events are actually available, update behavior, and evidence of conformance. OPC UA servers may implement subsets of capabilities, as the OPC UA overview explains.
Choose where processing belongs
Keep functions that depend on deterministic timing or safe operation in the robot controller and local control system. An industrial edge layer can collect and normalize data from different assets, run suitable local inference, and provide an interface to higher-level systems. Send selected information to enterprise or cloud systems for fleet analysis, model management, or longer-term analytics when the use case and connection allow. This is an architecture option, not a universal product requirement; validate it against the controller, application, and plant design. OPC UA describes cross-level communication, while OPC Foundation material discusses factory automation and edge onboarding. OPC UA for Factory Automation and OPC Foundation / OPC Connect, June 2026

Does a factory AI robot need Wi-Fi, 5G, TSN, or the cloud?
There is no single required network technology for all factory robots. Choose connectivity against the application’s timing, reliability, mobility, scale, and recovery needs, then test it in the installed environment. NIST identifies factory wireless challenges including finite spectrum, coexistence with other networks, delay, packet loss, interference, intrusion or jamming, and the need for high reliability, low latency, and scalability. NIST: Reliable, High Performance Wireless Systems for Factory Automation
- Wireless: Consider it where mobility or cell flexibility matters, but validate coverage, delay, loss, interference, coexistence, and behavior under representative load. A radio technology name alone does not demonstrate that the application’s requirements are met.
- Wired industrial Ethernet and TSN: Assess them when the application requires more deterministic communication. TSN support in OPC UA Field Level Communications is a design option, not proof that a specific installation meets a timing target. Confirm support end to end with the controller and network equipment. OPC UA for Factory Automation
- Cloud: Use it where latency and connectivity permit, such as selected fleet or historical analytics. Do not assume a cloud connection guarantees local control or safe operation.
Set application-specific limits for latency, jitter, availability, scale, loss, and recovery, then measure them in the cell under representative operating conditions. The cited sources do not establish universal target values: they must be determined for the robot, task, and factory environment.
What must happen when data or connectivity is interrupted?
Specify interruption behavior before deployment, including what the robot does locally, what data are buffered, and how the system recovers. OPC UA describes mechanisms for detecting and recovering from communication failures. OPC Foundation edge-onboarding guidance published in June 2026 calls for zero data loss during northbound interruptions; confirm that the chosen gateway and its configuration can actually provide the required behavior rather than assuming all implementations do. - Define whether data are buffered locally, for how long, and what happens if the buffer fills.
- Preserve timestamp continuity and identify missing or delayed measurements after reconnection.
- Define how reconnection and data recovery work, including which events or values can be lost or replayed.
- Decide how the controller handles stale commands and which local behavior is safe for the process.
- Set operator notification and recovery procedures for the specific cell.
Test disconnections and recovery under realistic conditions. Do not let an analytics or enterprise link become an unexamined dependency for a function that must continue safely and predictably at the machine.
How should the robot data path be secured?
OPC UA provides mechanisms for application authentication, encryption, message integrity, secure sessions, and audit trails. Those mechanisms do not select the right site configuration for you: OPC UA says installation designers must choose and configure measures appropriate to their system. Apply the factory’s OT security design to robot, edge, and enterprise connections, including identity and access control, segmentation, secure configuration, logging, and controlled data flows.
