What Counts as High-Resolution Audio? Formats, Thresholds and Logos

High-resolution audio generally exceeds CD’s 44.1 kHz/16-bit baseline, but thresholds vary. Learn how sample rate, bit depth, FLAC, and the JAS logo differ.

High-resolution audio usually means digital audio with a sample rate, bit depth, or both above CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16-bit baseline. There is no single universal cutoff: a file’s resolution, the technical standard being used, and a product’s right to carry the Hi-Res Audio logo are related but distinct questions.

What is high-resolution audio?

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) describes high-resolution audio in common usage as digital formats whose sampling rates and bit depths exceed CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16-bit values. That comparison is a useful starting point, not a universal rule that every hi-res definition applies identically. The AES also cautions that formats are “only delivery modes”: resolution figures do not, by themselves, describe the quality of the original recording or the whole playback chain. Sample rate and bit depth

  • Sample rate is the number of digital audio samples taken each second, expressed in hertz or kilohertz (kHz).
  • Bit depth is the number of bits used to represent each PCM audio sample.

Common higher-resolution PCM examples include 24-bit/96 kHz and 24-bit/192 kHz. Neither figure is a universal minimum for every use of the term; the threshold depends on whether the claim refers to common usage, a particular convention, or a product certification.

What sample rate and bit depth count as hi-res?

The Japan Audio Society (JAS) publishes examples based on the JEITA convention that show why it is too simple to require both numbers to exceed CD. In those examples, either a higher bit depth or a higher sample rate can qualify.

Sample rate and bit depth JAS page’s JEITA-reference example
44.1 kHz / 24-bit Hi-res
48 kHz / 24-bit Hi-res
96 kHz / 16-bit Hi-res
96 kHz / 12-bit Not hi-res
32 kHz / 24-bit Not hi-res

These are examples under the JEITA reference presented by JAS, not a claim that every organization uses the same threshold. They also show that “hi-res” does not always mean both the sample rate and bit depth are higher than CD. JAS: Hi-Res Definition and Operation

Is 24-bit/44.1 kHz high-resolution audio?

Under the JAS page’s JEITA-reference examples, yes: 44.1 kHz/24-bit is listed as hi-res because its bit depth exceeds CD’s 16-bit baseline. The answer can differ when someone is using another framework, so a precise claim should identify the standard or convention rather than imply a universal cutoff.

Is FLAC the same thing as hi-res audio?

No. FLAC is a lossless audio codec, not a resolution category. Like WAV or AIFF, a format label alone does not tell you the sample rate or bit depth of a particular recording. A FLAC file can contain CD-resolution PCM or higher-resolution PCM; check the file’s metadata to find its actual values.

The IETF’s FLAC specification permits PCM sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz and bit depths from 4 to 32 bits. Those are specification limits, not typical playback capabilities or recommended settings. IETF RFC 9639: Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC)

What does the Hi-Res Audio logo mean?

The JAS Hi-Res Audio logo is a product qualification, not simply a badge for a high-resolution file. JAS’s criteria, updated on November 9, 2022, address the product’s signal path, including analog response and digital recording or processing capability, as well as a company-organized listening evaluation.

Requirements across the signal path

  • Analog performance: Relevant recording microphones and playback equipment such as amplifiers, speakers, and headphones have frequency-response requirements at or above 40 kHz.
  • Digital capability: The listed recording, input/output, decoding, digital signal processing, and digital-to-analog conversion functions must support 96 kHz/24-bit or above.
  • File playback: The criteria list FLAC and WAV support for relevant playback products, with an exception for self-recording equipment.
  • Listening evaluation: Applicants must organize an evaluation and assign responsibility for sound quality.

The requirements vary with a product’s role. JAS also has a separate Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo regime for wireless audio-transfer products, with additional wireless conditions alongside other applicable requirements. The logo indicates qualification against the relevant JAS criteria; it does not prove that every recording carrying a hi-res label sounds better to every listener. JAS: Hi-Res Audio Logo Criteria

How to assess a hi-res claim

  1. Identify the framework. Find out whether the claim refers to common usage, the JEITA examples reproduced by JAS, or JAS product-logo criteria.
  2. Check the file metadata. Look for the actual sample rate and, for PCM audio, bit depth; do not infer them from an extension such as .flac or .wav.
  3. Separate encoding from provenance. A high-resolution file does not establish that its source was recorded or mastered at that resolution.
  4. For a product logo, check the product and signal path. A file’s metadata does not certify the equipment used to record or reproduce it, and wired and wireless logo criteria are not interchangeable.

Resolution describes technical properties of a digital signal or product capability. Whether those properties produce an audible difference is a broader question involving the recording, processing, playback chain, and listener; a hi-res label alone does not settle it.
