The coral loses much of its color and a major source of energy, but bleaching does not automatically mean the animal is dead. If stressful conditions ease soon enough, a colony may regain its algae and recover. If stress is severe or prolonged, energy shortages, disease, reduced growth and reproduction, coral death, and the loss of reef habitat can follow.
What is coral bleaching?
Shallow-water reef-building corals live in a mutualistic relationship with photosynthetic algae commonly called zooxanthellae. The coral provides the algae with a protected home and materials needed for photosynthesis. In return, the algae produce carbohydrates that supply much of the coral’s energy. They also contribute oxygen and help process waste products.

Environmental stress can disrupt this relationship. The coral expels some or most of its algae, or the algae lose their pigments. Because much of a coral’s visible color comes from these symbionts, the exposed tissue looks pale or white over the underlying calcium-carbonate skeleton. This is why the process is called bleaching.
Bleaching is therefore an observable sign of stress, not a diagnosis of immediate death. A bleached colony still has living animal tissue and can recover if conditions return to a tolerable range before its energy reserves are exhausted.

What happens inside a bleached coral?
The coral loses its main energy subsidy
Without its algae, a coral has far less energy available for everyday metabolism. It can capture plankton and other food, but those sources generally do not replace the large, continuous energy contribution supplied by photosynthesis. The colony must draw on stored reserves while it tries to survive.
Growth and reproduction slow
Energy that would normally support skeletal growth, tissue maintenance and reproduction is diverted toward surviving the stress. Even a colony that eventually regains its algae may show a period of slower calcification or reduced reproductive output. Survival of the animal does not mean that the reef immediately returns to its previous condition.
Stress increases vulnerability to disease
Prolonged bleaching weakens corals and can make them more susceptible to disease and additional environmental shocks. If high temperatures, intense light, poor water quality or another pressure continues, damaged tissue may die. Repeated bleaching can leave too little time for colonies to rebuild energy reserves between events.
What causes coral bleaching?
NOAA identifies unusually warm seawater, increasingly associated with climate change, as the leading cause of bleaching. Temperature stress can damage the photosynthetic machinery of the coral’s algal partners and destabilize the partnership. The risk depends on both how far conditions depart from normal and how long the departure lasts.

Heat is not the only possible cause. NOAA also identifies several local or secondary pressures:
- Changes in light intensity, including unusually strong sunlight during hot conditions.
- Changes in nutrient availability.
- Runoff and pollution that alter water quality.
- Exposure to air during extreme low tides.
- Other local pressures that reduce a coral’s ability to tolerate heat or recover afterward.
Different bleaching events can therefore have different combinations of causes. A satellite heat alert may identify conditions favorable to bleaching, while local pollution, disease, storms, sediment or fishing pressure can determine how a particular reef responds.
How bleaching becomes a reef-ecosystem problem
Living coral provides three-dimensional habitat
Healthy coral colonies build and maintain the hard framework that makes a reef complex. Branches, ledges, holes and crevices provide shelter, attachment sites and feeding grounds for fish, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, sponges and many other organisms. Bleaching reduces the coral’s ability to build that framework; death removes living tissue and eventually leaves the structure vulnerable to physical breakdown.

When coral mortality is widespread, the reef can lose structural complexity as skeletons erode. Fewer refuges can mean greater exposure to predators and stronger currents. Species that feed directly on living coral, rely on coral surfaces or use reef crevices for nursery habitat may decline or relocate. Changes in one population can affect predators, prey, competitors and the organisms that recycle organic matter.

Ecological effects can cascade
A reef is a network rather than a collection of isolated colonies. Loss of living coral can shift space toward algae or other organisms, alter which fish can recruit and reproduce successfully, and change the flow of energy through the food web. The eventual outcome varies with species, reef shape, water quality, storms, fishing pressure and the capacity of surviving corals to regrow.
Bleaching, heat stress and mortality are different measurements
NOAA Coral Reef Watch combines satellite and other environmental information to monitor conditions that can produce bleaching. Its heat-stress products are valuable early warnings, but they are not a direct census of bleached or dead coral.
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Bleaching-level heat stress | Environmental conditions over a mapped reef area have reached levels associated with bleaching risk. | The percentage of colonies that are visibly bleached, or how many will die. |
| Observed bleaching | Field or community observations document pale or white coral at particular locations and times. | The total area affected globally unless observations are systematically sampled. |
| Coral mortality | Surveys show that coral tissue has died. | The original cause without additional ecological and environmental evidence. |
| Recovery | Surviving colonies regain algae, color and physiological function over time. | That the reef has restored its former structure, abundance or reproductive output. |
When comparing reefs or events, keep stressor and duration, geographic extent, observed bleaching, mortality, recovery and co-occurring local pressures separate. A large heat-stress footprint can include reefs where bleaching was limited, delayed, or not documented, while a small local pollution problem can produce serious damage outside a broad satellite pattern.
What the latest global event shows
NOAA confirmed the fourth global mass bleaching event on April 15, 2024. In a June 2, 2026 update, NOAA said the event likely ended in 2025 after an observation period that included the austral summer of December 2025 through February 2026.

“We needed to confirm that no widespread, large-scale bleaching was reported anywhere during the austral summer which ran from December 2025 through February 2026, before we were confident the event had ended,” said Derek Manzello, coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch.
For January 1, 2023 through September 30, 2025, NOAA Coral Reef Watch reported bleaching-level heat stress across approximately 84.4% of the world’s coral reef area and documented mass bleaching in at least 83 countries and territories. The 84.4% figure describes the mapped area exposed to bleaching-level heat stress; it is not the percentage of corals that died or the percentage directly observed bleaching. NOAA’s NESDIS news report rounded the same broad figure to 84%.
Historical figures are not interchangeable with this estimate. NOAA reported that unusually warm water affected 70% of coral reef ecosystems worldwide during the 2014–2017 event. NOAA’s coastal fast-facts page states that heat stress encompassed 51% of reefs globally in 2016. It also reports that the northern and far-northern Great Barrier Reef experienced its first mass bleaching event that year, with 85% bleaching and 29% mortality among its shallow-water corals. Those numbers describe a specified region and event, not a global mortality rate.
Why reef losses matter to people
Coral reefs support food supplies, income, coastal protection, recreation and local economies. NOAA states that over half a billion people depend on reefs for food, income and protection. NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management reports that about 25% of marine species are found in, on or around coral reefs. These are broad reef-context figures, not estimates of damage caused by one bleaching event.
Best Value
As reef structure and living coral decline, communities can face reduced catches, less attractive tourism sites and weaker natural protection from waves and storms. The effects are uneven: dependence varies by coast, livelihood, governance and the condition of alternative habitats such as mangroves and seagrass beds. Reef decline does not produce the same social outcome everywhere, but it removes ecological and economic services that many coastal communities use.
What determines whether a reef recovers?
Duration and severity of stress
Shorter, less intense stress gives corals a better chance to regain symbiotic algae. Extended heat, repeated bleaching or an abrupt peak in temperature increases the likelihood of tissue loss and mortality.
Species and local conditions
Coral species differ in their tolerance, and colonies in different locations may experience different water movement, depth, light, nutrients and disease exposure. A reef with surviving adult colonies and nearby sources of coral larvae may recover more readily than a reef that has lost both living structure and recruitment sources.

Additional human and natural pressures
Pollution, sediment, nutrient imbalance, destructive fishing, disease and storms can compound heat stress. Reducing these local pressures cannot remove the global warming trend, but it can improve the conditions in which surviving corals resist stress and rebuild.
How scientists and reef managers interpret an event
- Check environmental alerts. Satellite and ocean observations indicate where heat stress or other unusual conditions are occurring.
- Verify conditions locally. Divers, researchers and community monitors record bleaching, species affected, depth and severity.
- Track survival. Follow-up surveys distinguish colonies that regain color from those that lose tissue or die.
- Assess habitat change. Measure coral cover, structural complexity, fish communities and recruitment rather than relying on a single bleaching photograph.
- Record co-occurring pressures. Water quality, disease, storms and fishing help explain why two reefs exposed to similar heat can have different outcomes.
This combination of environmental monitoring and field evidence prevents a common error: treating a regional heat map as if it were a direct count of dead coral.
Quick Recap
What readers should remember
- Bleaching is the loss or dysfunction of coral–algae partnerships under stress.
- A bleached coral is alive unless its tissue has died, and recovery is possible.
- Long or severe stress can reduce energy, growth and reproduction and increase disease and mortality.
- Heat is the leading cause, but light, nutrients, runoff, pollution and extreme low tides can contribute.
- Coral death can erode reef habitat, alter food webs and reduce shelter and food for marine life.
- Heat-stress percentages describe environmental exposure, not automatically bleaching or mortality.
