What Context Window, Reasoning Mode, and Multimodal Support Mean When Choosing an AI Model

Context size, reasoning controls, and supported input and output formats are separate model-selection factors. Learn what each means and how to compare candidates.

When choosing an AI model, compare three separate things: how much material it can take in at once (context window), what reasoning controls it offers, and which kinds of data it can accept or produce (multimodal support). None of these specifications alone tells you which model will do your job best. Check the exact model and API documentation, then try candidates on representative tasks while accounting for output limits, latency, cost, and integration requirements.

What a context window tells you

A context window is the capacity for information a model can process in a request or conversation. It is usually stated in tokens, and the limit applies to a particular model or snapshot—not automatically to every model from the same provider.

A larger window can let you provide more of a long document, codebase, or conversation in one go. It is a capacity specification, not a quality score: a larger context does not prove the model will accurately find or use every detail. Depending on the model and API, reasoning tokens and generated output may also draw on available context or token budgets. Check input and output limits separately, and leave room for the answer and any reasoning budget.

For examples in official documentation reviewed on October 5, 2026, Google lists a 1-million-token input context window and up to 64,000 tokens of output for Gemini 3 in its Gemini 3 developer guide. Anthropic lists 1 million context tokens for Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, and Claude Sonnet 5.5, and 200,000 for Claude Haiku 4.5 in its model overview. These are documented product specifications, not a permanent provider ranking; verify the current model ID and limits before deciding.

What reasoning mode or effort changes

These labels describe controls for a model’s reasoning behavior, but providers do not use them identically. A mode may select a standard or more computation-intensive execution path; an effort setting may control how much reasoning the model applies. Read the documentation for the particular model rather than assuming similarly named controls are equivalent.

In OpenAI’s API, mode and effort are independent settings: mode selects standard or pro execution, while effort controls reasoning within that mode. OpenAI says pro mode performs more model work, increasing token use and cost. Its reasoning guide also explains that reasoning tokens consume context space and count toward output-token billing.

Google documents a thinking_level control for Gemini 3 and describes Gemini 3 and 2.5 as thinking models in its Gemini 3 guide and thinking documentation. Google says those series use a thinking process intended to improve reasoning and multi-step planning, including for coding, advanced mathematics, and data analysis; that is Google’s description of its own models, not an independent comparison. Anthropic’s model overview distinguishes adaptive and extended thinking across its models. The available controls, defaults, and resource effects therefore need to be checked model by model.

What multimodal support means

Multimodal capability means a model can work with more than one kind of data. The relevant question is not just whether a model is “multimodal,” but which formats it accepts and which it can generate. Input support does not imply output support: image understanding, for example, is different from image generation; audio input differs from speech output.

Google’s long-context guide says Gemini models can natively understand text, video, audio, and images. Anthropic’s current model overview says its current models support text and image input and text output. These descriptions do not mean every model or API supports every modality. Confirm the precise model’s supported inputs and outputs, along with any feature restrictions in the product or API you plan to use.

How to compare models for your task

Use official specifications to narrow the candidates, then evaluate the remaining options in the workflow where you intend to use them. Provider recommendations can be useful starting points; they are not independent evaluations.

  1. Define a representative task. Use realistic prompts and inputs, and judge correctness and usefulness against what the job actually requires. OpenAI’s latency optimization guide recommends experimenting with different models and settings in the target workflow.
  2. Check context fit. Estimate the largest realistic request, conversation history, and desired response. Confirm model-specific input and output limits, including whether reasoning tokens use part of the budget, and leave room for the answer.
  3. Inspect reasoning controls. Find out whether the model offers a reasoning or thinking control, which levels or modes it supports, what the default is, and what the documentation says about token use, cost, or latency.
  4. Match modalities to the job. Verify each required input and output direction—for example, image understanding versus image generation, or audio input versus speech output—and check API-specific restrictions.
  5. Compare operational fit. Weigh observed task quality against latency, usage cost, output limits, API or app availability, tool support, and how frequently the workflow runs. OpenAI’s guide also highlights urgency, frequency, intended use of results, and quality needs as relevant considerations.

Official specifications and model capabilities can change. Before implementation, recheck the provider’s current documentation for the exact model ID, limits, availability, pricing, and retirement schedule. The published context figures above are product specifications; the documentation cited here does not establish an independent statistic showing that one provider or model is universally best at context use, reasoning, or multimodal work.
