What Container and Codec Does YouTube Accept for Prerecorded Live Streams?

YouTube’s recommended format depends on whether you upload a video file or send prerecorded footage through a live encoder.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It depends on what you mean by “prerecorded live stream.” For a normal video-file upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For prerecorded footage sent through a live encoder, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. These are separate workflows with separate settings.

Upload a video file, or send a live encoder feed?

First choose the publishing path. A file uploaded through YouTube Studio is governed by YouTube’s recommended upload-encoding settings. A live encoder sends a real-time feed to YouTube over a live-stream protocol, even if the footage being sent was recorded earlier. YouTube documents the two paths separately: upload encoding settings and live encoder settings.

Workflow Container or transport Video Audio
Regular video upload MP4 recommended H.264 recommended AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio
Live encoder feed RTMP or RTMPS H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 AAC or MP3

YouTube describes the upload formats as recommendations, not as a statement that every other format is rejected. Likewise, its live encoder page gives supported encoder settings; do not treat the upload container recommendation as the live transport specification.

Recommended settings for a prerecorded video upload

For a conventional upload, YouTube’s recommended combination is MP4, H.264 video, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. The same guidance recommends progressive video, a frame rate matching the original recording, and 48 kHz audio. It also recommends avoiding edit lists and placing the MP4 moov atom at the beginning of the file (often called “Fast Start”). See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.

  • Container: MP4.
  • Video: H.264.
  • Audio: AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio.
  • Frame rate: preserve the rate at which the video was recorded rather than changing it without need.
  • File layout: use progressive video, avoid edit lists, and move the moov atom to the front for fast start.
  • Audio sample rate: 48 kHz is YouTube’s recommendation.

Uploading an MP4 does not, by itself, make the video a live broadcast. It remains a regular uploaded video unless you deliver the footage through a live encoder or a cloud service that sends an encoder feed to YouTube.

Codecs and settings for prerecorded footage sent as a live stream

For the encoder workflow, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. The encoder’s job is to send a compatible live feed; the fact that its content was prerecorded does not change the live-ingestion specification. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. The listed live encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps. Check the current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for resolution-specific bitrate values.

The live stream settings page covers configuring the stream. Test with representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on the feed for an important broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That means your encoder settings govern the feed sent to YouTube; they do not need to match every viewer’s playback format.

What changes for HDR live streaming?

HDR live has additional constraints. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies HEVC and a 10-bit HDR configuration; it does not support AV1 for HDR in the encoder settings guidance. The HLS instructions use transport stream (TS) segments between 1 and 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance for the applicable HDR setup. Do not assume the ordinary SDR encoder choices and HDR requirements are interchangeable.

Keeping a prerecorded stream running

If you want recorded videos to play continuously as a YouTube Live broadcast, you need a live encoder feed that stays connected; simply uploading a file is a different workflow. You can configure and run your own encoder, or use a cloud service that loops uploaded videos. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance names Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that mention is not an endorsement.

Copyright, archiving, and practical checks

Technical compatibility does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material in a stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s policies before scheduling a long-running stream. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not make the same assurance for streams that run longer. Plan a separate recording or archive strategy if preserving a longer broadcast matters.

  • Confirm whether you are uploading a file or sending a live encoder feed before choosing codecs.
  • For uploads, begin with MP4/H.264 and the recommended audio options; preserve the source frame rate.
  • For live ingestion, verify protocol, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, and bitrate in the encoder and YouTube’s current setup guidance.
  • Keep the stream key private, test motion and audio, and review preview and stream health before going live.
  • For HDR, follow YouTube’s separate HEVC, 10-bit, and HLS segment guidance rather than applying SDR assumptions.
