Connected-car technology can bring phone apps, vehicle data, cloud services and road information into one driving experience—but it is not a single feature, and it does not make a car self-driving. Depending on the vehicle, it may mean phone projection on the dashboard, remote controls in an automaker’s app, wireless software updates, or communications between vehicles and roadside equipment. Each layer does a different job, has different requirements and may handle different data.
What does connected car technology do?
It links a vehicle to one or more outside systems so drivers can access information or services. A car may connect to a smartphone, the automaker’s servers, cellular networks, nearby vehicles, or road infrastructure. The useful question is not simply whether a car is “connected,” but what it connects to and what that connection enables.

| Technology layer | What it connects | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Phone integration | Vehicle display and controls to a compatible smartphone | Navigation, calls, messages, voice functions and audio |
| Automaker telematics | Vehicle systems to the manufacturer’s service and app | Remote controls, vehicle status, diagnostics and assistance |
| Wireless services and updates | Vehicle to cellular or other data connections and cloud services | Online features, service delivery and some software updates |
| Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) | Vehicles to other vehicles, infrastructure or road users | Sharing hazard and traffic information |
These layers can coexist, but one does not imply the others. A car that mirrors phone apps is not necessarily equipped for V2X, and an automaker’s remote-start app is not the same thing as a safety warning from roadside infrastructure.

Different features use different routes. Phone projection pairs a compatible phone with the car’s infotainment system. Telematics uses vehicle electronics and a communications link to exchange information with an automaker’s service; the driver may access some of it through an app. Online features and software updates rely on a supported connection and the automaker’s service arrangements. V2X-equipped systems can exchange messages directly with nearby compatible equipment.

The connection may depend on a particular vehicle configuration, a supported phone and operating system, enrollment, service terms, location, or cellular and GPS coverage. Some V2X functions also need compatible equipment beyond the car. The presence of a screen, an app, or an “online” label alone does not establish which functions are available.
What changes during an ordinary drive?
Phone navigation, calls and entertainment
Phone integration can display selected navigation, calling, messaging, voice-control and audio functions through the car’s interface. Nissan describes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as examples. Volkswagen describes connected plans that can include online navigation, connected voice functions, hotspot service and premium radio. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not a guarantee that every model, trim or market has the same features. Drivers should use the vehicle’s supported interface and follow local rules for phone use behind the wheel.
Remote controls and vehicle status
An automaker’s app may let an enrolled owner check vehicle status or location, use remote start or unlock, view diagnostics, receive maintenance alerts, or request roadside help. Nissan describes remote engine start, vehicle-finder and status features; Hyundai describes remote controls and diagnostics. Which functions work—and whether they require a paid plan, trial, particular trim or available network—depends on the exact vehicle and current service terms.

Software and connected services
A wireless connection can support online services and deliver some software updates without a workshop visit. In a 2025 speech, NHTSA noted that more recalls were being remedied through over-the-air software updates. That is a trend, not a promise that every recall or repair can be completed remotely: some issues still require inspection, parts or in-person work. Check the recall notice and the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific vehicle.
What is V2X, and what can it add?
V2X means vehicle-to-everything communication. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) describes it as a family of technologies that can exchange information to support roadway safety, efficiency or mobility. Its main categories include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-pedestrian or other road-user (V2P) communication.
USDOT’s explainer describes short-range exchanges over approximately 300 meters. A suitably equipped system may receive information about a hazard even when it is not directly visible to the driver—for example, because another vehicle or obstacle blocks the view. These communications are designed for low latency and can operate without routing each message through a cellular network. Actual performance and usefulness depend on compatible, interoperable equipment and suitable conditions; the stated range is not a guarantee that every message will reach every vehicle at that distance.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
Possible applications include warnings about hazards or work zones and coordination with traffic signals. USDOT deployment evaluations illustrate both the potential and the limits of pilot results:
- In a Tampa pilot, the V2X forward-collision-warning system showed a 9% decrease in normalized forward-collision conflicts per vehicle over time. The measure was conflicts, not a general crash-reduction rate; USDOT notes that longer crash evaluation may be needed because crashes are rare events.
- An Indiana work-zone project reported fewer hard-braking events.
- School-bus signal-priority deployments examined traffic-signal coordination outcomes.
Those are results from particular deployments, not a forecast of what any driver will experience. USDOT has identified interoperability as essential: benefits are limited if vehicles and infrastructure cannot exchange and interpret messages reliably. NHTSA’s 2024 report to Congress describes closed-course tests in which LTE-V2X and DSRC performed similarly under nominal conditions, while noting that edge-case interference needed further investigation. That test finding is not a field-wide guarantee.
Do connected features make a car safer or self-driving?
Some connected systems can deliver useful information, but “connected” is not a synonym for “autonomous,” and a driver-assistance feature is not proof that the vehicle can drive itself. NHTSA says even Level 2 assistance requires the driver to remain engaged and attentive. Drivers should follow the owner’s manual, monitor the road and be ready to take control.

There is evidence that certain driver-assistance functions can reduce specific crash types, but it should not be attributed to connectivity alone. NHTSA’s 2025 PARTS summary reports a 49% reduction in front-to-rear crashes associated with automatic emergency braking across model years 2015–2023 in the studied fleet and analysis. The same summary reports 46% for model years 2015–2017 and 52% for model years 2021–2023. Its second study reports a 9% decrease in single-vehicle frontal crashes with non-motorists for vehicles equipped with pedestrian automatic emergency braking. These are study findings for defined functions and outcomes—not estimates of the effect of connected-car technology overall.
Connectivity can also support post-crash response. In a 2025 speech, NHTSA cited that 43% of people killed in crashes between 2019 and 2023 were initially alive when emergency medical services arrived, in discussing telematics-based crash notifications. That statistic gives context for the importance of response; it does not establish that a particular connected service changes survival outcomes.

Depending on the service, information may include vehicle location, vehicle health, driving data, account details or information needed to provide a feature. The data involved and how it is used are manufacturer- and service-specific. For example, Toyota’s connected-services privacy notice says its services may collect location, vehicle-health and driving data to support features such as navigation assistance, emergency services, remote start, maintenance alerts and infotainment. It also discusses transfers connected with device mirroring and possible sharing with service providers. That notice describes Toyota’s practices; it should not be treated as a description of every automaker’s policy.

Before enabling a service, check the current privacy notice and the vehicle and app settings. Look for what is collected, the purposes for using it, who may receive it, how long it is retained, and what controls are available. A feature’s convenience should be weighed against the data it needs to work.
How are connected vehicles protected?
Connectivity creates security considerations because vehicles combine communications, electronics, sensors and computer systems. NHTSA advocates a layered cybersecurity approach, including prioritizing safety-critical control systems, detecting and responding to incidents, building resilience and recovery, and sharing threat information across the industry. These are ongoing protection priorities, not a guarantee that any connected product is risk-free.
For an owner, practical questions include how the manufacturer delivers security updates, how it handles suspected incidents, and whether an app or service can be disabled without affecting essential vehicle functions. Keep accounts and apps protected, install updates according to the manufacturer’s guidance, and consult the owner’s manual before changing connectivity settings.
