The Renesas RZ/T2H is a compact, single-chip MPU option that combines Linux application processing with separate real-time control cores. Its architecture pairs four Arm Cortex-A55 cores with two Cortex-R52 cores. Microchip’s PIC64GX offers a different split-processing approach, while ST’s STM32 MPU platform offers a real-time Linux software route. Which fits depends on the control deadline, isolation needs, peripherals and software stack—not a headline core count.
How can one MPU run Linux and real-time control?
Linux is suited to feature-rich application work such as user interfaces, networking and higher-level system tasks. A control loop, by contrast, may need predictable response within a defined deadline. A heterogeneous MPU can place those jobs on different cores: application cores run Linux, while real-time cores handle time-sensitive work.

That division is an architectural choice, not proof that every deadline will be met. The complete design—including software, memory access, interrupts, peripherals and other workloads—determines worst-case control latency.
What does the Renesas RZ/T2H provide?
Renesas describes the RZ/T2H as a high-end MPU that combines Linux operation, application processing and high-precision real-time control on one chip. The manufacturer specifies four Arm Cortex-A55 application cores running at up to 1.2 GHz and two Cortex-R52 real-time cores running at up to 1.0 GHz. These are product specifications, not independent benchmark results. Renesas RZ/T2H product page.

Its listed interfaces and capabilities include TSN-capable networking, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET RT/IRT, LPDDR4, SD/eMMC, PCIe Gen3 and xSPI. Check the current product documentation for the exact part, configuration and interface requirements of a design.
Renesas identifies industrial robots, collaborative robots, AGVs and AMRs, multi-axis servo systems, CNC equipment, motion controllers and PLCs as target applications. That application list is not a certification or a guarantee of suitability: designers still need to establish control timing, safety requirements, peripheral fit and software support for their specific system.

How does Microchip’s PIC64GX differ?
Microchip’s 2024 PIC64GX1000 product brief describes a 64-bit RISC-V MPU with five cores: four U54 application cores and an E51 monitor processor. It says Linux and RTOS or bare-metal software can operate simultaneously in conjunction with the E51, and describes a coherent multi-core cluster for Linux and deterministic real-time workloads. The brief lists operation up to 600 MHz. These are vendor claims in that 2024 brief, not a directly comparable performance test. Consult the current datasheet and confirm part availability before choosing a device. Microchip PIC64GX1000 product brief.

When is real-time Linux a different route?
ST’s OpenSTLinux materials describe a mainlined Linux distribution for STM32 MPUs and identify the X-LINUX-RT expansion package as a way to enable real-time Linux. ST gives industrial robots, factory automation and HMI as example application areas. This route focuses on real-time Linux software, rather than the dedicated control-core emphasis of the RZ/T2H and PIC64GX. Whether it can meet a particular timing requirement depends on the workload, configuration and measured worst-case behavior. ST STM32 MPU OpenSTLinux page.
A real-time Linux option is not automatically interchangeable with a separate control core. Compare the required loop period and worst-case latency, and determine whether the control task needs stronger workload isolation or direct access to particular peripherals. The cited manufacturer pages do not provide a common performance comparison.

What should you compare before selecting an MPU?
- Timing evidence: Define the control-loop period and deadline, then seek worst-case latency evidence for the actual software configuration and workload. The cited pages do not establish a numeric winner.
- Execution and isolation model: Determine whether control runs on dedicated real-time cores, alongside Linux under a monitor-processor arrangement, or through a real-time Linux configuration. Confirm how tasks, memory and interrupts are isolated.
- Peripherals and networks: Match motor-control interfaces, industrial protocols and required I/O to the exact device and system design.
- Software support: Check supported Linux distributions, RTOS or bare-metal options, vendor maintenance and current development documentation. Microchip points developers to Yocto and Buildroot environments and recommends the ATSAM5D27-SOM1-EK1 evaluation kit for Linux prototyping on its MPU platform; this is Microchip-specific and does not establish compatibility with Renesas hardware. Microchip Linux support.
- System integration: Compare package, power, memory needs and board-level requirements using current datasheets. The cited pages do not provide a common package-size comparison, so “compact” alone cannot distinguish these options.
Which option is the better fit?
Start with the hardest real-time requirement. If a design calls for distinct application and control cores in one MPU, the RZ/T2H is a named example with Cortex-A55 and Cortex-R52 resources and industrial-control positioning from Renesas. If the desired platform is RISC-V with simultaneous Linux and RTOS or bare-metal operation described around an E51 monitor processor, examine the PIC64GX documentation. If the project instead seeks a real-time Linux software path for STM32 MPUs, review ST’s OpenSTLinux and X-LINUX-RT materials. For any of them, validate timing, peripheral fit and software support against the current documentation and the intended workload.
