There is no single cloud server or storage profile that suits every electronic design automation (EDA) workload. Size infrastructure for the specific tool, design, and flow stage: measure processor speed and parallel scaling, peak memory, shared-storage behavior, and network performance together. Then account for scheduling, licenses, data movement, security, user access, and total cost. A representative pilot and the tool vendor’s current support matrix are more reliable guides than a generic instance recommendation.

How should you size compute for EDA?

Different stages of a design flow can have very different resource profiles. A job may be limited by single-thread performance, benefit from many cores, need substantial memory, or spend significant time waiting on shared data. Select compute for the job rather than treating all EDA as one workload class.

  • Processor: Record processor generation, clock behavior, and core count. Determine whether the tool’s workload is serial, threaded, or distributed, and whether it continues to scale efficiently as cores are added.
  • Memory: Measure peak memory as well as average use. Compare memory capacity with the number of cores so a high-core configuration does not force jobs to compete for RAM.
  • Storage path: Check whether the job is sensitive to storage IOPS, throughput, or latency; a large CPU allocation cannot compensate for a data bottleneck.
  • Co-tenancy and support: Observe performance when jobs run alongside other workloads, and verify that the operating system and instance architecture are supported by the tool vendor.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recommends choosing instance types according to job requirements, which can range from large memory footprints to high IOPS or throughput. Its semiconductor-design whitepaper gives an illustrative scenario of 100 servers and more than 2,000 CPU cores for a particular critical-IP gate-level simulation stage. That is an example workload, not a baseline for EDA deployments.

Physical verification can also demand substantial resources. Synopsys describes sophisticated full-chip DRC and LVS jobs as potentially taking several days and requiring hundreds or thousands of CPU cores for a reasonable turnaround. In a vendor article, Synopsys cited AWS X2iezn configurations with up to 4.5 GHz, 1.5 TB of memory, 32 GiB per vCPU, up to 48 vCPUs and 1,536 GiB RAM, 100 Gbps networking, and 19 Gbps EBS bandwidth. These are time-sensitive specifications in that article, not a current universal recommendation or a performance guarantee for every tool.

What should you measure in EDA storage?

Capacity is only one part of storage sizing. A shared filesystem serving many concurrent jobs must be evaluated for working-set capacity, metadata operations, latency, IOPS, and sustained throughput under load. File access patterns matter too: large design databases may involve many large files, and version-control workflows can multiply the amount of data being accessed or synchronized.

AWS’s 2020 EDA architecture article describes shared-file-system throughput needs ranging from 500 MB/sec to 10 GB/sec, varying with use case, design size, and core count. Treat that as AWS’s workload-dependent architecture guidance, not as a universal target or minimum.

Separate durable data from active working data

Keep source and reference material distinct from high-performance scratch or processing data. In an AWS architecture example, S3 is used for persistent libraries, tools, and specifications; EFS for home directories and automation scripts; and FSx for Lustre for high-performance shared processing. These are AWS service examples rather than requirements that apply across cloud providers. AWS describes FSx for Lustre as supporting S3 integration, POSIX mounting, sub-millisecond latency, and high throughput; actual service limits depend on configuration and current terms.

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)

AWS’s earlier EDA optimization guidance warns that centralized NFS filers can become constrained by storage space or bandwidth as data volume and cluster size grow, extending jobs and potentially increasing license costs. The durable lesson is to test the storage path at expected concurrency and revisit workflow design when moving to cloud storage, rather than assuming that a lift-and-shift data layout will serve a larger cluster well.

How do networking and data locality affect performance?

Plan the network alongside compute and storage. Measure bandwidth, latency, jitter, and contention under representative load for node-to-node communication, shared-storage access, license-server reachability, interactive engineering sessions, and transfers to existing environments. Cadence notes that individual EDA tools have distinct server, storage, and network expectations, so mapping them to a cloud provider requires workload-specific evaluation.

For globally distributed engineering teams, compare placing compute near engineers with placing it near shared datasets, license services, or existing design environments. Account for replication and synchronization overhead as well as the transfer of inputs and results. AWS notes that distributed teams can complicate large-scale infrastructure management and use of globally licensed EDA software; there is no universally preferred region or network topology established for every organization.

What else belongs in an EDA cloud environment?

Production EDA infrastructure is more than instances and storage. AWS’s architecture guidance identifies a compute cluster, scheduler, shared filesystem, license management, remote desktop or visualization, user access and identity controls, budgets, and monitoring as parts of the environment.

The scheduler should understand job requirements and priorities so it can place work on appropriate resources. Make queue time and utilization visible, and coordinate job admission with license availability and persistent data access. For interactive work, include the engineer’s remote-session experience in the design and pilot rather than evaluating only batch completion times.

Which deployment model fits your operating boundaries?

Customer-managed cloud infrastructure, managed EDA SaaS, and hybrid bursting differ in who operates the environment and where data and workflows sit. Synopsys describes all three contexts. The right comparison depends on control, integration, data handling, and the team’s capacity to operate the platform.

Model Operations and control Data and workflow questions Evaluate when
BYOC (bring your own cloud) The customer manages the cloud infrastructure and retains direct control over its environment. Determine how EDA tools, licenses, identity, storage, and existing automation integrate with the customer’s cloud account and policies. You need customer control and have the operational capability to manage the environment.
Managed EDA SaaS The vendor operates more of the environment; confirm the exact division of responsibilities rather than assuming all operations transfer. Clarify where design data and results reside, how tools and licenses are accessed, what support staff can access, and how data can be exported at exit. You want to assess a vendor-managed operating model and its fit with your governance and workflow requirements.
Hybrid bursting Work can be split between existing infrastructure and cloud capacity; an on-premises scheduler may submit jobs to cloud resources. Plan synchronization of inputs and outputs, license reachability, data locality, and how job state and failures are handled across environments. You want to evaluate cloud capacity for peaks while retaining parts of an established on-premises flow.

Synopsys lists role-based management of projects, users, resources, licenses, and budgets for its platform. It also reports encryption at rest and in transit, MFA with role-based access control, a dedicated virtual network, workload protection, vulnerability management, and continuous incident response. These are vendor-reported platform capabilities, not an independent assessment; verify current scope and attestations directly during procurement.

How should you plan elasticity and control cost?

EDA demand is often uneven. AWS describes IP characterization, functional verification, and timing analysis as workloads that can create peaks and leave resources underused between runs. Elastic capacity can help with batch peaks, but only if provisioning, queueing, storage, and license availability work together.

AWS’s 2020 example says EC2 Spot Instances may offer up to a 90% discount against On-Demand prices for fault-tolerant workloads. This is a historical AWS-specific pricing statement, not a current savings promise. Check current pricing and interruption behavior, and establish whether the tool and workflow support checkpoint and restart before assigning interruptible capacity to a job.

Track cost per completed run or design milestone rather than instance-hour price alone. Include storage, data transfer, idle resources, licenses, support, and engineering time. AWS and Synopsys describe budget or usage-management features in their respective cloud solutions, but visibility into spend does not replace measuring the full cost of a successful result.

What security and governance requirements should you check?

Design data can contain valuable proprietary IP, and Cadence identifies security and the large, distributed file collections in chip-design databases as important cloud-transition considerations. Define the controls before moving representative design data, including:

  • Data classification, geographic restrictions, retention, backup, and recovery requirements.
  • Tenant and network isolation, encryption, identity lifecycle, and role separation.
  • Audit logging, incident response, and the scope of vendor or support access.
  • How data is synchronized between locations and how it can be exported or deleted when a service or project ends.

For any provider or managed platform, verify that attestations and security claims cover the specific service, region, configuration, and support model you plan to use. A general compliance label alone does not establish that every workflow or data path is in scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you validate a cloud design before scaling it?

Run a pilot with representative design cases, tool versions, and flow stages—not just a small test job or an isolated compute benchmark. Compare end-to-end completion time, including queueing and data movement, and collect enough information to identify the actual bottleneck.

  1. Profile existing runs: Record runtime, peak memory, CPU utilization, storage behavior, license use, failures, and concurrency for representative jobs.
  2. Map requirements: Identify the tool’s supported operating systems and architectures, parallel behavior, storage access pattern, license dependencies, and interactive requirements.
  3. Test candidate configurations: Compare processor, memory, storage, and network choices at realistic concurrency; include contention and data synchronization where relevant.
  4. Evaluate operations and governance: Check scheduler behavior, access controls, monitoring, recovery, data movement, and responsibility boundaries for the proposed deployment model.
  5. Compare complete outcomes: Assess queue time, utilization, reliability, license consumption, data-transfer overhead, and total cost per completed run or milestone before extrapolating.

Recheck current cloud catalogs, regional availability, pricing, licensing terms, and tool support matrices before implementation. Provider configurations and commercial terms change, and vendor architecture examples do not establish results for a different design or flow.
