Chrome’s site-access setting controls when an extension may use the access it has requested and which matching websites it can use it on. A broad grant can let extension code work with page data on many sites, but the permission alone does not prove that the extension collects or misuses your data. You can narrow access, review allowed sites, or remove an extension you no longer need.
The controls described here are for desktop Chrome. Labels and availability can vary by Chrome version, operating system, and whether a device is managed.

What Chrome’s site-access permission controls
Some extensions need permission to “read and change site data.” Chrome’s setting determines when the extension can use its requested access: only after you select it, on a specific site, or automatically on all sites it has requested. These choices apply only to websites covered by the extension’s host permissions; the setting does not independently give an extension access to every website.
Host permissions are defined by URL match patterns. They specify which sites an extension can access, while the site-access choice controls when it can use that access. The extension’s requested permissions and code also determine which technical capabilities are available. Chrome’s permissions documentation explains host permissions and related capabilities.

What the three access choices mean
| Choice | When access is available | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| When you select the extension | After you click or otherwise select it. Chrome Help says this temporary choice must be selected again after the tab or window closes. | Access is tied to your action rather than being available automatically in the background on that site. |
| On specific sites | Automatically on the site or sites you allow. | The extension can operate on those allowed sites without requiring you to select it each time. |
| On all sites | Automatically on all sites covered by the extension’s requested host permissions. | This is the broadest of the three choices, but it still applies only to sites matching those permissions. |
Chrome Help describes the controls as allowing an extension to read and change site data when selected, on a current or selected site, or on all requested sites. Exact menu wording can differ. Google’s desktop instructions describe the available controls.
What access can enable—and what it does not prove
Depending on the extension’s requested permissions and implementation, host access can enable capabilities such as injecting scripts into pages, making cross-origin requests from extension contexts, accessing cookies, reading some sensitive tab properties, or using relevant APIs to monitor or modify network requests. These capabilities are not automatically granted by every site-access setting: the exact access depends on the extension’s permissions and code.

A permission warning describes potential access, not proof of actual collection, transmission, or misuse. Google’s Chrome Web Store Help says a warning does not mean an extension is dangerous; it signals that the extension can access the requested information. The permission prompt is not a complete audit of how a particular extension handles data. Google’s explanation of requested permissions provides more context.
How to judge whether the scope makes sense
When considering an extension, compare its site access with what it says it does. An extension that needs to work on every page may have a different rationale from one whose main feature applies only to a single service. A broad permission is not, by itself, evidence of bad behavior, but it gives the extension a wider potential operating scope on matching sites.

- Sites: Does the extension need one site, a set of sites, or all of its requested sites?
- Timing: Does the feature need to run automatically, or could it work only after you select the extension?
- Purpose: Is the requested access clearly related to the feature you want?
- Alternatives: Could the feature work with temporary access or access requested only when you enable that feature?
Chrome advises extension developers to request only permissions critical to the extension, avoid requesting permissions preemptively, and use optional permissions or less invasive APIs where appropriate. Its guidance identifies activeTab as an alternative for many use cases: it can provide temporary access to the active tab after you invoke the extension, ending when you navigate away from or close that tab. Optional permissions can let an extension ask for access when you enable a feature. These are design options, not guarantees about how any particular extension works. Chrome’s user-privacy guidance describes these approaches.
Change an extension’s site access in desktop Chrome
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu.
- Open the extension’s menu for site data.
- Choose whether it can act when you select it, on the current or selected site, or on all sites it has requested.
For more detailed controls, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions, select the extension’s Details page, and change its site access or add or remove entries under allowed sites. The setting affects only sites matching that extension’s host permissions. The exact controls may vary with your Chrome version or device.

The prompt tells you about the access the extension is requesting, not everything it does with information it can reach. It does not establish whether the extension stores, transmits, or shares data, nor whether it uses access in ways you did not expect. To assess those practices for a specific extension, review its current Chrome Web Store disclosures and privacy policy as well as whether its requested scope fits its stated purpose.
