Chrome on Android stores several different kinds of information, and “cached images and files” are only one category. The cache is a temporary copy of page content that can make repeat visits faster. Cookies and broader site data preserve logins, preferences, web-app storage and, for some protected media, licences. Clearing the cache normally means a site must download page content again; clearing cookies and site data can reset that site and require a fresh sign-in. Chrome lets you choose the time range, data categories and, when necessary, a single site instead of wiping everything.
What Chrome stores on an Android phone or tablet
Cached images and files
The cache is saved page content. Chrome can retain pieces of a page—such as text, images and other files—so the browser does not have to fetch every item again on a later visit. Google summarizes this as: “The cache remembers parts of pages, like images, to help them open faster during your next visit.” The cache is therefore a performance convenience, not your browsing history and not a backup of a website.

When you clear cached images and files, Chrome removes those saved copies. The next visit may feel slower because the page has to download its content again. The site itself, your bookmarks and your account data are not erased by this cache-only action.

Cookies and site data
Cookies are files created by websites to remember browsing information. Depending on the site, that can include a sign-in session, language choice, shopping or other site preferences, and identifiers used to keep a web session working. “Site data” is a wider category than cookies. Chrome’s Android documentation includes HTML5 storage systems such as application caches, Web Storage, Web SQL Database and Indexed Database data. It also lists media licences for protected HTML5 content under cookies and site data.
Google’s Chrome Help describes the scope precisely: “Site data: HTML5-enabled storage types including application caches, web storage data, web SQL database data and indexed database data are deleted.” Deleting this category can therefore affect a web app that stores information locally even when that information is not in a conventional cookie.

- Browsing history: visited addresses, related New Tab shortcuts and address-bar predictions. Deleting history may also close open tabs.
- Saved passwords: credentials saved in Chrome, a distinct category from cache and cookies.
- Autofill data: locally stored form entries. Cards and addresses saved to a Google Account are not deleted merely because local Autofill data is removed.
- Site settings and permissions: choices such as whether a site can use particular browser capabilities.
Google searches and other activity saved to your Google Account are also separate from this Chrome list. Removing Chrome data is not the same as deleting Google Account activity.
Cache versus cookies and site data: the practical difference

What happens when you clear each type
Clearing only the cache
Chrome can fetch a fresh copy of page resources after the cache is removed. This is a proportionate first step when a page looks incorrectly formatted, shows an outdated version or fails because a locally cached file is damaged. It does not deliberately erase a website’s cookie-based login or your Chrome history. You should still expect a temporary increase in downloads and potentially slower first loads for pages whose cached resources were removed.
Clearing cookies and site data
This action removes the selected sites’ stored state. A website can forget preferences, discard local web-app data or lose the session that kept you signed in. Be prepared to authenticate again and to choose preferences again on affected sites. A protected-media site may also need to obtain a media licence again.

Google Account Help says you remain signed in on Google websites such as google.com and youtube.com. That statement does not guarantee that every non-Google website will retain its session: each site controls how its own cookies and other storage are used.

How to clear selected data in Chrome for Android
Chrome’s labels can differ slightly by version, but the documented route is the same: open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Delete browsing data.
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then tap Delete browsing data.
- Choose a duration. The documented choices for cookie deletion are Last 15 minutes, Last hour, Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, Last 4 weeks and All time.
- Open More options if you need to choose individual categories rather than the default selection.
- Select only the categories you intend to remove—for example, Cached images and files for a loading problem, or Cookies and site data when a site’s remembered state is the suspected cause.
- Review the duration and categories, then confirm the deletion.
The duration applies to the category you select. Choosing a short range limits the change; choosing All time removes the selected category across the full period Chrome has retained. If you do not want to affect passwords, Autofill, permissions or history, leave those categories unselected.

How to remove data for just one website
Use per-site deletion when one domain is malfunctioning and you want to preserve the stored state of other sites.

- Open the affected website in Chrome.
- Tap the page-information control near the address bar.
- Tap Cookies and site data.
- Find the stored data for that site and tap its delete control.
- Reload the page and sign in or reselect preferences if the site requests them.
This targeted method avoids deleting unrelated websites’ cookies and local storage. The exact icon or wording can vary between Chrome releases, so look for the page-information control and the cookies/site-data entry if the layout differs.

For a page that will not load or looks wrong
Start with Cached images and files. Chrome will retrieve page content again, which can resolve a stale or damaged local copy without intentionally resetting your login or other site preferences. If the problem remains, use the per-site cookies and site-data control for that domain.

Delete cookies and site data for the affected site, preferably with the single-site procedure. This resets the site’s stored state, so have the account credentials or verification method available. Do not select saved passwords unless you intentionally want Chrome’s saved credentials removed.
For privacy cleanup of visited addresses
Select Browsing history and check the duration. This removes URLs from History, related New Tab shortcuts and address-bar predictions, and may close open tabs. It is a different operation from clearing cache or cookies.
For a complete local reset
Use More options and select every category you genuinely want removed, including passwords, Autofill and site settings if appropriate. A broad selection has broader consequences: credentials, form entries, permissions and site sessions can all be lost. Cards and addresses stored in your Google Account are not removed by deleting local Autofill data, and Google Account activity is not part of this Chrome deletion list.
History sync and Google Account data are separate decisions
If Chrome history sync is enabled, deleting history removes it from signed-in devices that also have history sync enabled. That consequence applies to history deletion; do not assume that clearing only cache or cookies has the same effect. Check the category before confirming if other devices matter.

If you delete data saved to the Google Account from Android, Google warns that it is removed from all devices signed in to that account. Decide whether you want to erase local Chrome records, synced Chrome history, account-level activity, or only one website’s storage; they are different scopes.

Common pitfalls and recovery steps
- Expecting cache clearing to preserve every page speed benefit: the first reload after deletion can be slower while resources download again. Later visits can cache resources anew.
- Clearing all cookies for a login problem: this can sign you out of many unrelated sites. Delete the affected site’s data first.
- Assuming Google Account sign-in covers other sites: remaining signed-in status on Google websites does not preserve sessions controlled by unrelated websites.
- Selecting history by accident: history deletion changes URLs, suggestions and New Tab shortcuts and may close open tabs. Reopen sites from bookmarks or your account’s own records where available.
- Removing saved passwords or Autofill unnecessarily: these are separate categories. Leave them unchecked unless credential or form-data deletion is the goal.
- Expecting a guaranteed fix: clearing data can address stale content, formatting and stored-session problems, but it cannot repair every server, network, account or app fault. If a clean cache or site reset changes nothing, investigate the site, connection or account itself.
What clearing Chrome data does not do
Clearing cached images and files does not delete Chrome bookmarks, your Google Account, Google searches or other account activity. Clearing cookies and site data does not automatically remove saved passwords, Autofill entries, site permissions or browsing history unless you select those categories. Deleting local Autofill information also does not remove cards and addresses stored in the Google Account. These boundaries are why the category checklist matters more than simply tapping a broad “clear” command.
A safe decision checklist
- Identify whether the symptom is stale page content, a remembered session, a single-site failure, unwanted history or a need to remove credentials.
- Choose the narrowest category that matches that symptom.
- Use a short duration unless you have a reason to select All time.
- Prefer single-site deletion when only one domain is involved.
- Before deleting cookies, make sure you can sign back in and know any site-specific preferences you may need to restore.
- Before deleting history, check whether history sync is enabled on other signed-in devices.
- Before deleting account-level activity, confirm that removing it from all signed-in devices is acceptable.
Bottom line
Chrome’s cache is a temporary speed aid; cookies and site data hold the broader state that makes websites remember sessions, preferences and web-app information. Clear cached images and files first for a stale or formatting problem. Clear cookies and site data when the site’s stored state is the problem, preferably for that site alone, and expect a possible sign-in. Treat history, passwords, Autofill, permissions, synced history and Google Account activity as separate categories with separate consequences.
