Choosing a Heretical dialogue option in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader does more than change a line of conversation. It adds points to your Heretical conviction, can unlock conviction- or rank-linked gameplay effects, and may trigger a separate permanent consequence attached to that specific decision. One documented choice sacrifices a companion permanently, but that is not the result of every Heretical selection.
The safest way to understand the system is to separate three things: the points a choice awards, the conviction rank those points help you reach, and any direct story consequence written into the individual choice. The available documentation supports those broad rules, not a complete list of every ending, companion reaction, or current threshold.

Heretical is one of three tracked convictions
Rogue Trader tracks three ideological paths: Dogmatic, Iconoclast and Heretical. Every time you select a dialogue or event response marked for one of these paths, the game can add points to that conviction. Heretical choices therefore form a cumulative route through the campaign rather than acting as isolated morality flags.

The labels describe the conviction associated with the response, not a guarantee that every choice has the same mechanical weight. Two answers can both be marked Heretical while awarding different numbers of points. A choice can also have consequences unrelated to its point award, such as changing who remains in your party.

Points and ranks are separate from the wording of a choice
A response may sound dramatically blasphemous yet award fewer points than a quieter decision elsewhere. Conversely, a short exchange can carry a larger award. The choice-level appendix documented by GameFAQs lists different values for individual decisions; it should not be treated as evidence that all Heretical options are equal.
Your accumulated points contribute to a conviction rank. The rank is the part of the system that can matter for wider narrative and gameplay reactivity. The exact threshold for a rank can depend on the current game build and the relevant path, so use the requirement displayed by your game rather than an old community chart when the two disagree.
What Heretical points can change
Dialogue and story reactions
Conviction is used to make the campaign react to the kind of ruler you are becoming. Dialogue checks, available responses and the way certain scenes recognize your ideology can depend on your conviction progress. A Heretical answer can therefore influence later conversations even when the immediate exchange appears self-contained.
That does not mean one selection rewrites the entire campaign. The documented system overview establishes that conviction can affect narrative reactivity, but the available sources do not provide a complete map of every later scene. A reliable interpretation is cumulative: individual decisions add to a path, and later content may check your path or rank.
Gameplay and conviction-linked items
Conviction is not purely cosmetic. Some item properties are tied to a conviction or to a conviction rank. Reaching the relevant rank can make a property available or allow you to benefit from it, while taking a different path may leave that property unavailable. The system overview does not establish a universal list of Heretical items or a single bonus applied to every Heretical character, so do not assume that choosing the label automatically grants a fixed combat modifier.

When an item or ability appears to be gated, read its in-game description. The important questions are whether it requires a specific conviction, which rank it names, and whether the effect is permanent, conditional or usable only while the item is equipped. Those details belong to the individual item rather than to the Heretical label as a whole.
The size of the award matters for later access
Because point awards vary, skipping one high-value Heretical response can put you farther from a rank than skipping several low-value responses. This is why a route based only on counting how many Heretical labels you selected can be misleading. Track the points shown by the game and the rank requirement that you are trying to meet.

A documented permanent companion loss
The choice appendix includes a Heretical decision that sacrifices a companion and permanently removes that character. This is the clearest documented example of a Heretical choice producing a direct, irreversible consequence beyond the conviction score.
Treat that decision as a specific branch, not as a rule for the entire path. Selecting a Heretical response elsewhere does not, by itself, prove that a companion will leave, die or become unavailable. If the game presents an explicit sacrifice, execution or permanent-loss warning, that text is more authoritative for the immediate choice than a general description of the conviction system.
How to protect a playthrough from an unwanted loss
Make a manual save before any major Heretical decision involving a named character, a ritual, a faction or an explicit ultimatum. Read every response and the confirmation text instead of choosing from the alignment label alone. If the result is unacceptable, reload and choose a different response; a later conviction rank cannot undo a companion who was permanently sacrificed by an earlier branch.

This precaution is especially useful when following a mixed-conviction run. You may want Heretical points for a rank or item effect without accepting a particular story sacrifice. The system allows you to make that decision deliberately rather than assuming the path requires every associated consequence.

What Patch 1.3 changed
Owlcat Games said in its Patch 1.3 announcement: “Many dialogue choices in the third and fourth Acts of the game that gave Dogmatic, Heretical or Iconoclast points now give significantly more of those points.” The change applies to the point awards attached to many choices in Acts III and IV, including Heretical responses.
This matters because a route that reaches a conviction rank in one version may progress differently in another. It also means that guides listing an exact number of points for an Act III or Act IV response can become stale after a patch. Use such lists as historical references unless they identify the same build you are playing.
Why existing characters did not receive the extra points automatically
Owlcat also explained that characters already in progress would not receive the added points immediately. The stated reason was that retroactively adding them could make a character switch conviction against the player’s will. In other words, the patch changed future awards rather than silently recalculating every existing save.
This is a developer explanation for Patch 1.3, not a promise that every later build uses the same values. If your save began before the update, its accumulated total and future opportunities may not match a new character started on a later version. Check the current game display when planning around a rank.

Do Heretical decisions determine the ending?
They can contribute to the state of your character and therefore to later narrative checks, but the available documentation does not establish that one Heretical choice determines the whole ending. Nor does it provide a complete, current list of ending thresholds, ending slides or all the choices that feed them.
Think of conviction as one input among several possible campaign variables. The practical question for a particular ending is not “Did I ever choose Heretical?” but “What conviction, rank and other conditions does this scene or ending require?” When a scene displays a requirement, follow that requirement. When a guide claims that one isolated response guarantees an ending, treat the claim cautiously unless it identifies the exact game version and all other conditions.
Can you mix Heretical with Dogmatic or Iconoclast?
The game tracks all three paths, so selecting a response from another path does not erase the Heretical points you already earned. You can therefore make mixed choices. The trade-off is progression: points invested in different convictions are not the same as concentrating on one path, and a mixed run may reach a desired rank later or fail to reach it.
Mixing is useful when the immediate consequence of one answer matters more to you than ideological consistency. It is also a way to avoid a specific irreversible branch while still pursuing a Heretical rank through other decisions. The exact result depends on the point values of the choices you make, not simply on the number of selections carrying each label.
How to choose a Heretical response deliberately
- Check the displayed label. Confirm that the response is actually marked Heretical. Do not infer its path from tone or from the lore reference alone.
- Read the entire exchange. Look for warnings about sacrifice, execution, exile, faction hostility or permanent loss. Those consequences are separate from the points awarded.
- Save before an irreversible-looking decision. Use a manual save when a companion or major quest is involved.
- Record the point award. Note the number shown after the choice, especially if you are targeting a rank. The value may differ from another Heretical response.
- Check your conviction screen. Verify that the expected path increased and see how far you are from the next displayed requirement.
- Inspect gated equipment or abilities. If an item mentions a conviction or rank, compare its requirement with your current status rather than assuming the choice has already unlocked it.
- Reassess after major patches. Acts III and IV awards were specifically changed in Patch 1.3, and later updates may alter values again.
How Heretical compares with the other convictions
The three paths use the same broad framework, but the individual content and point awards differ by decision. The table summarizes what can be established without pretending that the paths have identical outcomes.

| Conviction | What is established | What is not established by the available documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Heretical | Tracked points; possible narrative and gameplay reactivity; conviction- or rank-linked item properties; at least one documented choice that permanently sacrifices a companion. | A complete current list of thresholds, endings, companion reactions or item effects. |
| Dogmatic | Tracked points in the same conviction system; many Act III and IV awards were increased in Patch 1.3. | A complete comparison of its ranks, endings, item properties or permanent consequences. |
| Iconoclast | Tracked points in the same conviction system; many Act III and IV awards were increased in Patch 1.3. | A complete comparison of its ranks, endings, item properties or permanent consequences. |
This is why it is not possible to rank the three paths as universally “strongest.” Their practical value depends on the decisions you make, the ranks you reach and the content your particular run encounters.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Every Heretical choice has the same weight.”
It does not. Individual awards differ. Use the number shown for the specific response.
“The Heretical label alone removes companions.”
That overstates the evidence. One documented Heretical branch permanently sacrifices a companion; other choices must be evaluated on their own text and consequences.

Patch 1.3 increased many Acts III and IV awards, and the available evidence does not verify that later builds preserved every historical value. Confirm requirements and rewards in your version.
“One choice locks the final ending.”
The documented material does not support that conclusion. Conviction can affect later content, but a complete ending guide would need to account for additional conditions that are not established here.
What to remember before committing to the path
Choose Heretical responses when you want to pursue that conviction, not because every such option has the same payoff. Keep three separate records in mind: the points awarded, the rank those points may unlock, and the direct consequence of the scene. The first two determine progression; the third can be a one-off story branch such as permanently sacrificing a companion.
Patch 1.3 made many Act III and Act IV conviction awards substantially larger, while avoiding retroactive changes that could force existing characters across a conviction threshold. Because exact values and downstream branches can vary by build and choice, the in-game requirement and warning text remain the final authority for your save.
