What Changed in Selenium Manager with Selenium 4.11—and What Has Changed Since

Selenium 4.11 brought Chrome for Testing browser downloads and ChromeDriver resolution to Selenium Manager, along with improved mismatch diagnostics. Here is what changed and why the details are version-specific.

Selenium 4.11.0 added Chrome for Testing (CfT) support to Selenium Manager: it could resolve and download matching ChromeDriver versions and, when needed, download and cache a CfT browser. It also improved diagnostics for driver and browser mismatches. These are 4.11-era capabilities, not a complete description of Selenium today; consult the current Selenium Manager documentation for present behavior.

What Selenium 4.11 changed

Released on July 31, 2023, Selenium 4.11.0 extended Selenium Manager’s Chrome support in two related ways: it added Chrome for Testing endpoints for ChromeDriver management, and it added automated management of CfT browser releases. The release announcement identifies those as Selenium Manager changes; other release highlights, such as Chrome DevTools support for versions 113, 114, and 115, are separate from them. Downloading a browser as well as a driver

Before this change, the feature article described Selenium Manager primarily as a driver manager. In the 4.11 workflow, if Chrome was not installed, Manager could discover, download, and cache the current stable Chrome for Testing release. The article gives ~/.cache/selenium/chrome as the browser cache location for that workflow.

Requesting a version or release channel

The 4.11 feature article describes setting browserVersion to request a specific browser version. If that version was not installed locally, Selenium Manager could manage the corresponding CfT release and ChromeDriver. It also describes channel labels stable, beta, dev, and canary: Manager first looked for a matching local Chrome and managed CfT when it could not find one. Exact current behavior may differ; verify it in the current documentation before relying on these 4.11-specific details. Boni García’s Selenium Manager feature article, published July 31, 2023

How Selenium Manager handled driver discovery

Selenium Manager is a command-line tool written in Rust and shipped with Selenium. As García put it in the July 31, 2023 feature article, “Selenium Manager is a CLI (command line interface) tool implemented in Rust and compiled for Windows, Linux, and macOS.” Selenium bindings use it when a driver has not already been provided; it is a fallback, not a requirement to abandon manual or third-party driver management. Selenium Manager documentation

  1. It checks for a browser and determines its version.
  2. It resolves an appropriate driver version using vendor metadata.
  3. It downloads and unpacks the driver when needed.
  4. It caches the downloaded driver in ~/.cache/selenium.

The Selenium 4.11 release announcement also says Manager could find a driver on PATH or at a configured path, check for potential incompatibilities, and provide improved warnings and error messages. That matters when a locally managed driver no longer matches a browser that has updated independently.

What the 4.11 change did—and did not—cover

The feature article’s automated browser-download change was specifically about Chrome for Testing. It said Firefox and Edge browser management were future work at that time, so the 4.11 change should not be described as automatic browser downloads for those browsers. For current browser coverage and details, use the current Selenium Manager documentation.

More broadly, Selenium 4.11 is a historical milestone. Selenium Manager documentation has continued to change since then, so do not assume that a 2023 workflow, cache detail, option, or limitation still describes a current Selenium installation. The documentation search result reports a last-modified date of August 15, 2026. Current Selenium Manager documentation

Choosing a driver-management approach

Approach Who handles version synchronization? Setup and diagnostics
Selenium Manager fallback Manager resolves and manages a driver when a driver has not been provided; 4.11 added the Chrome for Testing workflows described above. Shipped with Selenium and invoked by bindings as needed. The 4.11 release announcement describes PATH/configured-path discovery and mismatch warnings.
Manual driver management You select and update the driver, and need to keep it compatible with the browser. Place the executable on PATH or configure its location; Selenium 4.11 Manager could inspect such drivers for potential incompatibility.
Third-party driver manager The chosen tool handles some or all driver selection and updating; the exact behavior depends on the tool. Configuration and diagnostics vary by tool. The cited Selenium sources do not establish a particular third-party manager’s features.

Recognizing and fixing a version mismatch

A mismatch can prevent a WebDriver session from starting. García’s article gives this example error: session not created: This version of ChromeDriver only supports Chrome version 113. It is an illustration of the failure mode, not guidance about current compatible versions.

  1. Identify which driver Selenium is using. Check whether a driver is being supplied on PATH, at a configured path, or by another management method.
  2. Compare it with the browser version. A browser that updates automatically can outgrow a driver you pinned or installed manually.
  3. Choose one management approach. If you want Selenium Manager to provide the fallback, remove or correct an unintended stale driver and retry. If you manage drivers yourself, update the driver to one compatible with the installed browser.
  4. Check the resulting warning or error. Selenium 4.11’s release announcement describes improved diagnostics, but the exact messages and behavior may vary with Selenium version and setup.

The feature article’s historical illustration involved ChromeDriver 113 and detected Chrome 115. Those numbers explain the kind of mismatch, not which versions to install now.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than run browser automation, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its cookie-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup is separate from Selenium Manager: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Selenium Manager replace Selenium WebDriver?

No. Selenium Manager manages drivers and, in the 4.11 Chrome for Testing workflow, browser downloads; it is used by Selenium bindings when a driver has not already been provided.

Where can I check what Selenium Manager supports now?
