What Changed in Next.js 13.2? A Look Back at Bytes #165

Bytes issue 165 looked at Next.js 13.2’s App Router changes, including metadata, Route Handlers, caching, and typed links—as announced in February 2023.

Bytes issue 165, “The Next Next,” centered on Next.js 13.2 and its App Router. Published February 27, 2023, the newsletter covered changes announced by Next.js four days earlier: metadata configuration, Route Handlers, caching, and typed links, alongside updates to MDX support and Turbopack. These are historical release details, not guidance on the framework’s current features or upgrade path.

What was Bytes issue 165 about?

Bytes’ archive lists issue 165 as “The Next Next,” published February 27, 2023. Its opening described a mix of Expo, “Practical-ish Elegance,” and life lessons from Daniel Tiger, but its main feature focused on Next.js 13.2 and the App Router. Read the issue in the Bytes archive.

Next.js published its 13.2 release announcement on February 23, 2023. It said the release brought “major improvements to the App Router (app) in preparation for stability.” That wording reflects the release’s status and intent at the time; it should not be read as a description of today’s framework maturity. See the official Next.js 13.2 release announcement.

Which App Router features did Next.js 13.2 highlight?

Metadata API

The Metadata API offered an explicit way to configure page or layout metadata in Server Components, including metadata generated dynamically. In Next.js 13.2, this feature was for the app directory, not the older pages directory.

Route Handlers

Route Handlers let developers define custom route behavior using the Web Request and Response APIs. Like the Metadata API, they were introduced for the app directory rather than pages.

Next.js Cache

The release announcement introduced Next.js Cache as a way to configure caching more granularly. It was marked beta in the 13.2 announcement, so it was not presented as a fully stable feature at launch.

Typed links

Typed links were marked beta and required both the App Router and TypeScript. The announcement described them as a way to catch invalid links through types; that qualification matters because the feature was not presented as a general capability across every routing setup.

What else was included in the release?

  • MDX support for Server Components: the release announcement included support for MDX in this context.
  • Improved error overlay: Next.js listed an improved development error overlay.
  • Turbopack improvements: the bundler received improvements but remained alpha in the announcement.

The App Router itself was still described as beta in the Bytes issue. The release announcement’s wording—improvements “in preparation for stability”—and the alpha or beta labels on particular features are useful historical context, not current status claims.

What scale did Next.js report in 2023?

In its February 23, 2023 release post, Next.js reported more than 3.9 million npm downloads per week and more than 100,000 GitHub stars. These were publisher-reported figures at the time of publication, not independent measurements or current counts. The same post described the project as the combined work of more than 2,500 individual developers and mentioned industry partners Google and Meta, also in the context of that 2023 announcement.

What the issue does—and does not—establish

Issue 165 is useful as a snapshot of what Next.js 13.2 announced for the App Router in early 2023. It supports a narrow distinction: the Metadata API and Route Handlers were for app, not pages. It does not establish the present-day feature set, the current maturity of those features, or whether a project should upgrade now. Those questions require current Next.js documentation and project-specific compatibility information.

The issue also included sponsored placements for Secureframe and FusionAuth, plus a sponsored CarbonQA mention. Their appearance documents placements in that newsletter; it does not establish current sponsorship or affiliate terms.
