It can look like a pale veil, bright spots, circles, arcs, streaks, or halos near a strong light. If it appears only when a bright source is in or near the frame and changes as you move the phone, it is usually an optical effect—not, by itself, proof of a fault. Flare that persists in varied conditions, or comes with visible damage or moisture, deserves closer inspection.
Why phone cameras produce flare
A camera lens is made of optical surfaces, and some incoming light reflects from those surfaces instead of following the intended path to form the image. As Canon explains in its general overview of lens coatings, internal reflections can send non-image light to the sensor or create a displaced, faint duplicate of a bright source. The first effect can wash out contrast; the duplicate is often called ghosting. Coatings reduce reflections, but they do not eliminate flare in every lighting situation.

Phone makers describe related effects in their own camera systems. Xiaomi says strong light can reflect multiple times between camera lenses before reaching the sensor, producing visible flare at certain angles. Huawei notes that reflections between the internal lens and rear-cover glass can appear as bright dots, arcs, halos, or petal-like marks. The exact appearance varies with the light, angle, and camera design; these descriptions do not establish that one phone model flares more than another.

- A bright source: The sun, a streetlight, or another intense point of light can send more stray light through the optical system.
- The source’s angle: A small change in framing or phone position can shift, weaken, or remove the artifact.
- Something over the camera: Smudges, a lens cover, film, or a case edge near the camera can add glare or reduce image quality. This is a possibility to test, not a reason to assume every case is at fault.
When flare is ordinary—and when to investigate
Sony Support says that whitish flare or circular ghosting when pointing an Xperia camera toward a strong light source can result from lens characteristics and “is not a malfunction.” That guidance applies only to the specific products or operating systems covered by Sony’s page, last modified 25 August 2026; it is not a universal warranty ruling for all phones.

For a practical diagnosis, look at the pattern rather than judging one photo in isolation:

Google’s Pixel Camera Help recommends checking for scratches, internal damage, dirt buildup, condensation or steam, and cracks. Huawei advises contacting an authorized customer-service center if the listed glare symptom does not resolve after cleaning. Those steps are useful indicators, but support routes and warranty decisions depend on the phone maker and model.

How to reduce flare, in order
- Change the composition. Shift the phone slightly so the bright source is not shining directly into the camera, then compare the image. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 15 flare FAQ identifies strong incident light and angle as relevant factors.
- Clean the camera glass gently. Wipe the glass and surrounding camera area with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Google Pixel Camera Help recommends this for camera image-quality issues; Huawei Support also recommends clean, soft cloths for smudges or oil.
- Temporarily remove anything around the camera. Take a comparison photo without a case, film, lens cover, or other accessory that overlaps or surrounds the camera. If the effect changes, inspect the accessory’s fit and edges.
- Inspect for damage or moisture. Look for cracks, scratches, visible dirt, or condensation. If the issue persists in varied lighting after the first checks—or you see signs of internal damage or moisture—use the manufacturer’s support path or an authorized service center.
For a photo already taken, editing software may reduce some visible artifacts, but it cannot be counted on to restore contrast or scene detail that flare obscured. Xiaomi lists editing as a possible after-capture option, not a guaranteed repair.

What not to assume
- A single flare-filled photo does not prove the camera is defective; strong light and angle can produce the effect in functioning optics.
- A lens protector is not a dependable flare fix. A film or cover can itself introduce glare, so compare with it removed before deciding what is helping.
- There is no established comparison here that ranks phone models or accessory brands by flare performance. The useful test is how your phone behaves with a changed angle, a clean lens, and accessories removed.
