Frog chytrid disease is caused primarily by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Its motile spores spread through water and infection can also pass through direct contact between amphibians. Infected animals moved between locations—including through the amphibian trade—can carry the fungus farther. Infection, visible disease and a population die-off are not the same outcome.
What causes chytrid disease in frogs?
Bd is the fungus; chytridiomycosis is the disease associated with its infection. Bd is the principal chytrid pathogen in frogs and has affected more than 200 amphibian species, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The fungus produces motile zoospores. These attach to amphibian skin, develop and invade skin cells. Bd colonization can interfere with the skin’s role in regulating water and electrolytes. In severe cases, that disruption can cause a dangerous electrolyte imbalance and fatal cardiac arrest; it is not an inevitable result of every infection.

Waterborne spores move locally
Motile zoospores can disperse in water and infect amphibians that encounter them. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) identifies waterborne zoospores as a transmission route in its diagnostic manual on infection with Bd.

Direct contact can transmit infection
Contact between infected and susceptible amphibians can also spread Bd. WOAH summarizes the two local routes this way: “Bd infection can spread by animal to animal contact or via contact with waterborne motile zoospores.”
Movement of amphibians can carry Bd farther
Moving infected amphibians between locations is an identified long-distance pathway, including through international trade. USGS also links Bd’s spread with the global pet trade. These pathways help explain how an aquatic pathogen can reach places beyond the immediate water body or group of animals where transmission began.

Contaminated water or moist soil may be additional routes
WOAH describes contaminated water or moist soil as possible contributors to long-distance movement. These should be treated as potential pathways, not assumed to be established to the same degree as waterborne zoospores, direct contact or the movement of infected animals.
Does an infected frog always become sick or die?
No. Infection, visible illness and a population die-off are distinct. A positive infection test does not by itself show that a frog will develop severe disease, and individual infections do not automatically mean a population will crash.

Outcomes vary with the amphibian species and environmental conditions. A 2007 study in the northeastern United States detected Bd in seven of nine species examined and discussed infection in places without recognized die-offs. In an experiment with boreal toads, survival varied with conditions including water contact and temperature. That result applies to the species and experimental conditions studied; it is not a universal prediction for wild frogs.

Bd (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) is the main chytrid fungus associated with disease in frogs. Bsal (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans) is a related but distinct fungus whose primary hosts are salamanders. Frogs can also become infected and spread Bsal, so the two pathogens should not be treated as interchangeable.

USGS reports that a Bsal surveillance effort in 2016–2017 detected none in more than 11,000 samples. That finding describes that specific effort; it does not establish that Bsal is absent everywhere now. See the USGS Bsal overview.
What is known about Bd’s geographic origin?
The cited WOAH and USGS material describes transmission pathways but does not establish a definitive geographic origin for Bd or measure how much each historical route contributed to its worldwide distribution. It is therefore more accurate to distinguish the documented ways the fungus can move from claims about exactly where it began or how it spread globally.
Hygiene when handling amphibians
For researchers, rehabilitators and keepers handling multiple amphibians, a peer-reviewed study supports using a fresh pair of disposable gloves for each animal as a hygiene measure. Follow applicable wildlife-handling and biosecurity protocols. This is a preventive handling measure, not a treatment recommendation for wild frogs.
