What is Capcom’s “AI-generation game engine”?
The phrase refers to REX, a project to develop Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine in stages. At Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 in Tokyo on October 2, 2026, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the project and the engine’s future evolution. Gamebiz’s report describes an effort to add named systems to the existing engine, not replace it wholesale. English-language coverage paraphrased the ambition as an “AI-generation game engine,” wording that can sound like a promise to generate game content. The conference account instead describes infrastructure intended to be easier for AI systems to work with, alongside improvements for human developers. What does REX change in the development workflow?
Gamebiz reported that REX groups several systems aimed at performance, development tools, efficiency and QA. The descriptions below are reported intentions and functions; they do not establish measured results across shipped games.

RE:UI is a framework for development-tool interfaces. Its design aims to keep large tools responsive and make automated testing possible without requiring a person to inspect the screen.
RE:Log: collecting and analyzing records
RE:Log changes how logs and communications are recorded and collected. Gamebiz describes shared storage, compression, search and analysis as parts of the system.

Future AI-assisted code and testing
The presentation was reported to describe a longer-term direction in which a shared programming-language foundation could help AI systems understand code, create code or test builds for bugs. These are future possibilities, not capabilities shown to be fully deployed or proven in the report.
Why is Capcom evolving RE Engine?
More than 2,000 developers use RE Engine, according to Capcom figures reported by Gamebiz in 2026. Ishida’s presentation reportedly cited the scale and complexity of modern games, delays when changing data, a growing and more diverse user base, and rapid advances in AI as reasons for the REX effort. That context makes REX a development-infrastructure project: the reported aims cover everyday friction in building and maintaining large games, not just consumer-facing generative AI. Gamebiz’s report attributes the developer count and rationale to the presentation.

Will Capcom use AI-generated assets in its games?
In a February 2026 investor briefing, Capcom said it would not incorporate AI-generated assets into game content while planning to use generative AI to improve development efficiency and productivity. AUTOMATON WEST reproduced the statement and reported that Capcom was evaluating possible uses in graphics, sound and programming. That is Capcom’s stated position at that time; the account does not define every boundary between an assistive production tool and an asset ultimately included in a game. It should not be read as a promise that AI will never be used in any creative workflow. AUTOMATON WEST’s briefing summary provides the dated statement.

In a May 2026 interview account, VGC quoted Capcom technical director Kazuki Abe saying, “The goal is to replace the routine tasks that arise in conjunction with creative work with AI.” VGC also attributed to Abe the view that people should control AI inputs and guarantee the quality of outputs. The publication presents the interview remarks in translation; they offer context about Capcom’s approach to human oversight, not a technical specification for REX. VGC’s interview account also discusses comments from Shinichi Inoue, Capcom’s vice president of game development platform and AI solutions, but those comments were not specifically about the October REX announcement.

What has Capcom demonstrated—and what remains a plan?
The reported announcement establishes the project’s staged direction and its named systems, but not the delivery of every intended capability. In particular, coverage provides no quantified productivity gains or quality improvements, and no release schedule for future AI-assisted code creation or testing. It therefore supports describing these functions as goals, not as results already achieved across Capcom’s games.
