Whether that actually keeps devices apart—or lets them reach the phone, hub, storage or other equipment they need—depends on your router’s settings and operating mode. In a new house, set it up early, then check the isolation and local-access controls before moving devices onto it.
What a guest network can do beyond hosting visitors
A guest network is a separate Wi-Fi network managed by the same router or mesh system as your main network. Depending on the product and its settings, it may let connected devices reach the internet while limiting their access to devices and services on your main network.

That separation can be useful for selected smart-home devices, such as cameras, plugs, sensors or thermostats. ASUS documents a dedicated IoT Network for this kind of equipment, and Microsoft suggests considering a second network or guest Wi-Fi for smart devices. Those examples do not mean every router’s guest network is a suitable IoT network: check what the specific product allows.

Google’s Guest Wi-Fi documentation, for example, describes a separate network and lets users choose devices to share with guests.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Check what “guest” means on your router
The label alone does not tell you how isolated the network is. For example, TP-Link documents that Deco automatically isolates the main and guest networks in Router mode, while in Access Point (AP) mode an “Allow Local Access” setting controls whether guest devices can reach the local network. Other products may behave differently.
Before relying on a guest network to separate devices, check the router or mesh system’s instructions and settings for:

- Whether guest devices can access devices on the main network.
- Whether devices on the guest network can communicate with each other.
- Whether local access can be enabled for selected devices or workflows.
- Whether the available controls vary by router, access-point or mesh mode.
Deco’s documented guest-network options also include security, bands, duration and bandwidth limits. Features and menu names can vary by model and firmware, so follow the instructions for your own equipment.
Check local-access needs before moving a device
Some smart devices need to communicate with a phone, hub, speaker, printer, storage device or another device on your main network. If guest-network isolation blocks that traffic, a device may still connect to the internet but lose a local feature such as control, discovery or media access.

- Wave 2 Wireless Internet Router: Achieve up to 600 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 1300 Mbps on the 5GHz band. Dual-band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

- Full Gigabit Ports: Create fast, reliable wired connections for your PCs, Smart TVs and gaming console with 4 x Gigabit LAN and 1 x Gigabit WAN. No USB Port
The German Federal Office for Information Security gives a smart TV that needs locally stored media as an example of a device that may not suit separation. Before moving a device, check which parts of its setup and everyday use require local communication. If a workflow depends on it, confirm the router supports the necessary local access or keep the device on the network where that workflow works.
Set up the network with distinct credentials
- Open your router or mesh system’s network settings. Use the manufacturer’s app or management interface and locate its guest-network or IoT-network controls; exact paths differ by product.
- Give the separate network its own name and password. Google advises using guest credentials that differ from the main Wi-Fi credentials.
- Choose access and security settings deliberately. Review local-access and client-to-client options, plus any available band, duration or bandwidth controls. Do not assume a setting has the same effect across router modes.
- Connect one suitable device and test its normal workflow. Check internet access as well as the local controls, discovery or sharing it needs before moving other devices.
- Secure the router itself. The Federal Trade Commission recommends password protection and advises turning off remote management, WPS and UPnP when they are not needed. Consult your manufacturer’s guidance before changing settings you rely on.
When a guest network is—and is not—a good fit
- It can be a useful fit for visitors who need internet access, or selected smart devices that do not need unrestricted access to equipment on your main network.
- Check carefully first when a device needs to find or communicate with a phone, hub, speaker, printer, storage device or another local resource.
- Do not treat the name as a security guarantee. Isolation and sharing depend on the router’s actual behavior, settings and operating mode.
In a new house, a guest network is worth configuring early as a separate connection you can use for visitors and, where the controls and device workflows make sense, selected smart-home equipment. Verify the behavior rather than assuming every guest network isolates devices in the same way.
