The strongest career paths combine safe flying with a second skill—such as GIS, surveying, photogrammetry, inspection reporting, or knowledge of a particular industry. In the United States, paid small-drone operations generally fall under FAA Part 107, but a pilot certificate alone does not qualify someone for every specialist job.
Careers and projects that use drone skills
The FAA operator survey describes a range of real-world UAS activities, while Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles show how drone imagery can feed into established mapping occupations. These are pathways and project types, not evidence of a standardized occupation called “drone pilot.”

Surveying and mapping
Drone photos can contribute to site documentation and geographic data collection. Surveying and mapping technicians collect and process geographic information, combine GIS with other data, and help produce or update maps and surveys. The job may combine fieldwork with office-based processing. See the BLS profile for surveying and mapping technicians.
Cartography and photogrammetry
Cartographers and photogrammetrists interpret geographic information and create maps and related products using tools such as GIS, CAD, and remote sensing. Drone imagery can be one input, but it does not replace measurement, data interpretation, or map-production skills. A relevant bachelor’s degree is typical for this occupation, according to the BLS occupational profile.

Inspection and asset documentation
A drone can collect repeatable images of infrastructure or other assets for a qualified inspection workflow. The images document visible conditions; an image by itself does not certify an asset’s safety or condition. The FAA operator survey includes aerial imagery and asset inspection among reported activities: FAA UAS survey report.
Agriculture and natural resources
Projects can involve observing crops, land, wildlife, or environmental conditions and collecting imagery or other data. The FAA survey includes agriculture, natural-resources work, and animal or environmental surveying among its examples. What a particular mission may fly, measure, or apply depends on its purpose and applicable rules. The USGS overview of drone uses provides additional context on aerial imaging and mapping.
Public safety and emergency response
Government agencies, law enforcement, and public-safety organizations use drone programs for operational missions. Alongside flight ability, this route calls for agency procedures and mission-specific training. The FAA describes operational authority pathways and public-sector drone programs in its public safety and government UAS guidance.

Photography, video, and communications
Drone skills can support aerial photography, video production, marketing, and communications work. In the United States, a non-recreational operation generally falls under Part 107, and the flight must still meet applicable operating and airspace requirements. The FAA’s commercial operator guidance explains the framework.
Instruction, program operations, and data services
FAA survey respondents also describe pilot training, helping organizations adopt UAS, and teaching mapping, GIS analysis, data collection, and inspection workflows. These examples show that instruction and program support are work areas, but they do not establish how many jobs are available or a universal experience requirement.
What employers and clients need beyond piloting
For most specialist work, the aircraft is a collection tool within a larger workflow. Choose a path by considering what you will deliver, what complementary expertise it requires, and what permissions the mission needs.

The FAA survey is useful for examples of tasks, not a representative count of jobs. BLS statistics describe broader occupations that may use drone-derived data; they are not a measure of demand for drone-only roles.

- Build safe-flight fundamentals. Practice controlled takeoffs and landings, orientation, steady movement, emergency response, battery and equipment checks, and preflight planning in places where flight is permitted. Treat this as a practical learning progression, not an FAA logged-hour requirement.
- Study and apply for Part 107 when your work requires it. The FAA says that to fly under its Small UAS Rule (Part 107), a pilot must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate. The knowledge test covers regulations, airspace, weather, aircraft loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, and radio communications. For an initial certificate, the FAA directs applicants to create an IACRA profile to obtain an FAA Tracking Number, schedule the UAG test at an FAA-approved testing center, pass it, and submit the certificate application. Check the current FAA certification instructions for live steps and requirements.
- Keep your knowledge current. The FAA says Part 107 certificate holders must complete online recurrent training every 24 calendar months to operate under Part 107. The FAA page lists free recurrent course options.
- Add a specialty. For mapping, develop GIS, survey-data, remote-sensing, or photogrammetry skills. For inspection, learn the relevant asset and reporting workflow. For agriculture or environmental work, build domain knowledge and understand the operating requirements that apply to the mission.
- Create a work sample. A portfolio can demonstrate a lawful, clearly documented project and its output—for example, an image set, map, or inspection-style report. This is a useful way to show collection and processing ability, not a universal employer requirement.
Rules and permissions affect the work you can accept
In the United States, FAA Part 107 covers civil small UAS operations for work and business involving aircraft under 55 pounds. The rule includes visual-line-of-sight and other operating requirements. The FAA’s Part 107 guidance provides an overview.
Airspace and the details of a particular operation determine what is allowed. Controlled-airspace operations require authorization; the FAA describes LAANC and manual request routes on its airspace authorization page. The FAA says LAANC requests may be submitted up to 90 days before a planned flight; verify the current process and timing on that live page. Some operations that depart from specified rule limitations require an FAA waiver; see the Part 107 waiver guidance.

These are general U.S. rules, not mission-specific legal advice. Before flying, verify current rules, airspace, location, aircraft, and intended operation. Readers outside the United States need to check their own national and local aviation requirements.
What related occupations pay—and what those figures do not mean
BLS figures provide context for two occupations where drone-derived data may be useful. They are occupation-wide U.S. figures, not a drone-pilot salary estimate or a guarantee of hiring or higher pay from earning a certificate.
| Occupation | Median annual wage | Projected employment growth | Average annual openings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surveying and mapping technicians | $54,240 in May 2025 (BLS) | 6% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS projections) | About 6,900 per year, 2025–2035 (BLS projections) |
| Cartographers and photogrammetrists | $81,390 in May 2025 (BLS) | 7% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS projections) | About 900 per year, 2025–2035 (BLS projections) |
BLS notes that surveying and mapping technicians may use drones to take photos and that GIS or other technology experience may help. Cartography and photogrammetry work typically calls for a relevant bachelor’s degree and technical preparation such as GIS and remote sensing. Consult the cited surveying and mapping and cartography and photogrammetry profiles for occupational details.
