Yes—if your old Echo still connects to Wi-Fi and responds, it can remain useful as an Alexa speaker, a Bluetooth audio device, a way to control compatible smart-home products, and, for certain models, part of a Fire TV home-theater setup. Its exact capabilities depend on the Echo generation and the accessories or services you want to use.
Identify your Echo before relying on a feature
Start by checking the model and generation. Amazon’s Echo device identification guide lists generations separately. An Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, and Echo Show are not interchangeable: ports, built-in smart-home features, and compatibility can differ.

Amazon’s UK software version page still lists software versions for the first- and second-generation Echo, and says Alexa devices update automatically when online. A listing is evidence that Amazon documents software for those models; it is not a promise of future updates or continued access to every Alexa feature.

Work as an Alexa speaker
If it connects and responds, you can try everyday voice requests such as playing music, asking questions, making calls, and checking news, sports scores, or weather. Amazon describes these as Echo-family uses, not as a guarantee that every service works on every generation. Availability can depend on the model, current Alexa services, and the service you request.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Play audio over Bluetooth
An Echo may pair with a phone or another Bluetooth audio device. Amazon maintains Echo Bluetooth pairing and troubleshooting support; follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every Echo has the same menus or behavior.
Control compatible smart-home devices
Alexa can control compatible products through skills, setup in the Alexa app, and certain direct connections. Before buying or pairing a bulb, plug, or other device, check the manufacturer’s Alexa compatibility and setup instructions, as Amazon recommends in its smart-home compatibility guidance and device setup instructions. For Bluetooth smart-home devices, Amazon says to keep the device within 30 ft (9 m) during setup.

Do not assume an old Echo has a particular smart-home radio or hub just because another Echo model does. Protocol and model compatibility matter: Amazon’s BLE-mesh discovery list, for example, excludes the first-generation Echo. See its BLE-mesh device guidance before planning around that connection method.
Join a Fire TV home-theater setup, if supported
Some Echo speakers can be paired in specified Fire TV home-theater configurations, but support is not universal. Check Amazon’s Echo and Fire TV compatibility guide against the exact Echo and Fire TV models you own before trying to build a setup around them.

Check Alexa+ eligibility separately
Access to newer Alexa features is not the same as basic speaker functionality. In an Amazon staff forum response dated March 28, 2026, Amazon’s stated Alexa+ eligibility list identified the first-generation Echo among older models that continue to use the original Alexa. Check Amazon’s current Alexa+ FAQ for the latest model eligibility; do not infer eligibility from a software-version listing.
Troubleshoot before you reset it
- Confirm power and connection. Make sure the Echo is powered and can reach the internet, then try a simple voice request. If it does not respond, check Amazon’s troubleshooting instructions for the exact model.
- Restart it first. For the first-generation Echo, Amazon recommends unplugging the device for 10 seconds, then reconnecting it. See Amazon’s first-generation Echo restart instructions.
- Use a factory reset only when needed. A reset erases personal information and device and smart-home connections, so you will need to set it up again. Amazon’s Echo reset guidance covers the process and points to deregistration information.
Keep it, repurpose it, or pass it on?
Keep it in service if it completes setup, stays connected, responds reliably, and supports the feature you actually need. Before deciding to replace it, check these practical factors:
