But “local” does not automatically mean offline, private across every app, or accurate. What it can do depends on the model, application, and hardware.
What tasks can a local AI computer handle?
On Windows, supported on-device language models can answer prompts and help with everyday text work. Microsoft describes Phi Silica as a small language model optimized for on-device inference. In practical terms, that can mean asking questions, drafting short text, summarizing, rewriting for clarity or tone, or turning text into a table. The exact capabilities depend on the model and the application using it. Microsoft’s Phi Silica documentation describes the model and its Windows integration.

Document, image, and speech tasks
Depending on the Windows API, model, and device, local AI can also support optical character recognition (OCR) for scanned documents and images, speech recognition, image description, image segmentation, image super-resolution, object extraction or erasure, and image generation. These are not universal features of every AI PC: some require a qualifying NPU, some can use supported GPUs or CPUs, and others may be experimental or planned rather than generally available. Check the specific feature’s support status in Microsoft’s Windows AI documentation.
Does “local AI” work offline and keep data private?
It can, but those are properties of a particular model-and-app workflow—not guarantees attached to the computer itself. Microsoft says Foundry Local can run inference without a cloud dependency once the model has been downloaded and cached. The initial model download requires internet access; refreshing optional catalog metadata is not required to keep using a cached model offline. Microsoft also says Foundry Local inference inputs and outputs remain on the device. Those statements apply to Foundry Local and its documented local APIs, not every application marketed as an AI assistant. Foundry Local’s documentation explains its setup and operation.

Before using sensitive material, check whether the particular feature processes data locally, whether the app sends anything to a service, and whether it needs a connection for downloads or other functions. A computer may run one model locally while another feature in the same app relies on the cloud.
What are the main limitations?
Local output can still be wrong
Running a model on your own computer does not make its answers dependable. Microsoft warns that Phi Silica may produce inaccurate, incomplete, or fabricated information and should not be treated as a sole source of truth. Check important claims against authoritative sources. For medical, legal, financial, or safety-related decisions, Microsoft calls for meaningful human review; do not rely on fluent AI output as the decision-maker. Microsoft’s Phi Silica transparency note details these cautions.

Features vary by device and software
There is no single hardware requirement for all local AI. Foundry Local can select from supported Qualcomm NPU, DirectX 12 GPU, NVIDIA CUDA, or CPU execution paths, depending on the device. Other Windows AI APIs may require a Copilot+ PC, while some local inference can run on supported GPUs or CPUs. A feature’s advertised presence does not establish that it is available in your Windows release or on your hardware; consult the specific API or app’s compatibility and availability information. Microsoft’s Foundry Local hardware support page describes execution options.
Performance draws on finite resources
Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs around a dedicated NPU rated at 40+ TOPS. That figure is a platform-class threshold, not a promise of a particular model’s quality, speed in every app, or compatibility with every local model. NPU-targeted models can offer faster inference and better battery efficiency, but software must specifically use the NPU for those benefits. Microsoft’s NPU device documentation explains the platform requirement.

From multiple peripherals to high-resolution displays, everything you need stays within easy reach.
On non-Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft says Phi Silica GPU inference may be slower and more power-hungry than NPU inference. GPU-based AI also competes with games, video, rendering, and other workloads. Long-running work can cause thermal throttling, while limited VRAM can create memory pressure or force slower shared-memory operation. Microsoft’s Phi Silica GPU inference guidance covers these trade-offs.

- Compatibility: Confirm the operating-system version, model support, and whether the required feature is generally available or still in preview.
- Execution hardware: Check whether the app uses a CPU, GPU, or NPU on your device; an NPU only helps when the software supports it.
- Memory: Check system memory and, for GPU inference, available VRAM. Memory limits can affect which model fits and how it runs.
- Responsiveness and sustained use: Consider expected latency, power draw, and thermal behavior, particularly if you will run AI while gaming, editing video, or doing other demanding work.
- Offline and data behavior: Establish whether the model must be downloaded first, what works without a connection afterward, and whether the specific app sends any information to a cloud service.
Model downloads can be several gigabytes, and feature requirements differ across Windows AI APIs, as the linked Foundry Local documentation and Windows AI documentation illustrate. The available evidence does not establish a ranked comparison of retail computers, so compatibility with your chosen model and workload is a more useful buying check than a general AI-PC label.
Where local AI is most useful
For routine drafting, rewriting, summarizing, text transformation, and supported image or speech tasks, local AI can be a convenient assistant—especially when a workflow benefits from keeping inference on-device or working offline after setup. Treat it as a tool for producing and transforming material, not as proof that its conclusions are correct. Review outputs and verify consequential claims before acting on them.
