First, check which Cheap Yellow Display you have
“Cheap Yellow Display” is a community nickname for the ESP32-2432S028R; it is not a guarantee that every similarly labeled board has identical hardware. Community maintainer Brian Lough explained the name this way: “There is an ESP32 with a built in 320 x 240 2.8″ LCD display with a touch screen called the “ESP32-2432S028R”, since this doesn’t roll of the tongue, I propose it should be renamed the “Cheap Yellow Display” or CYD for short.” The community repository is the source for that naming explanation and the reference board’s display dimensions.

For the referenced variant, community documentation also lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, an RGB LED, a light sensor, speaker amplifier output, and a few exposed GPIO connections. Check its board documentation, then compare the printed model and component markings on your own board. Display and touch controllers, pin maps, and feature availability can vary across CYD-style boards; do not copy another board’s wiring or software configuration without verifying it.
Seven project ideas for a CYD
These are project directions suggested by the board’s documented features, not claims that each has been built or tested on this exact board. The software, data source, external parts, and wiring depend on the implementation you choose.

1. Touchscreen information dashboard
Use the color display for a local clock, Wi-Fi status, and a handful of useful readings. Touch can switch between screens or change what information is shown. The board provides the display, touch input, and wireless ESP32; you choose the time source, data feeds, and software that bring the dashboard together.
2. Home-control panel
Make a large-button interface for controlling or checking a separately configured home-automation system. In this setup, the CYD is the user interface; it is not, by itself, a safe mains-load switch. Use appropriate external control hardware for anything that operates electrical equipment, and confirm the board variant’s pinout before connecting it.

3. Offline photo viewer or media browser
Explore image files on a microSD card and use touch to navigate between them. The reference board has a card slot and touch panel, but those features alone do not establish which image formats, libraries, card types, or formats your implementation will support. Check the requirements of the software you choose before preparing a card.

Connect a project-specific sensor to suitable exposed pins and show its readings, perhaps alongside a simple trend. The community project notes identify I2C-capable pins for the documented board, but the correct connections depend on your CYD variant and sensor. Verify both pinouts before wiring; the community documentation is a useful place to begin.

5. Small touchscreen game
Build a simple game around touch controls and a compact color screen: for example, a tap-to-react challenge or a basic puzzle. Keep the design modest enough for an embedded board and small display. The cited community materials do not provide performance benchmarks for particular games, so choose a game concept based on your implementation rather than assuming a specific frame rate or capability.
6. RGB LED and light-sensor control panel
If your board includes the documented components, make a touch interface to change the onboard RGB LED and display light-sensor readings. The reference variant lists both, but presence and pin configuration may differ on other boards. Confirm the components and their connections on your exact model before writing software around them.

7. LVGL interface prototype
Use the display to practice embedded interface design by building a menu, button panel, or instrument-style screen. A published example describes an ESP32-2432S028R using Arduino and LVGL 9.1; treat it as a version-specific starting point, not a promise that its setup remains compatible with every current board or software release. The community repository links to setup and example resources, including a reported LVGL demonstration.
