Websites can still see information needed to deliver your visit, including your public IP address, and can observe some browser and device signals. Brave’s Shields blocks many trackers and cross-site storage mechanisms and reduces or randomizes some fingerprinting signals by default. That makes tracking harder; it does not make ordinary browsing invisible. What a site can learn depends on your settings, platform and browser version, permissions, and whether you sign in or share information.
What can a website detect when you use Brave?
“Detect” can mean several things: receiving network information, observing browser or device characteristics, or learning details you provide directly. Brave addresses some tracking channels, but it cannot prevent a site from recognizing an account you sign into or retaining information you submit.

- Network information: The site you visit receives your request and can see your public IP address. Brave explains that blocking an embedded third-party request can prevent that third party from seeing your IP; this is different from hiding it from the site you intentionally visit. Brave’s explanation of IP visibility and request blocking.
- Browser and device signals: A page may observe certain characteristics exposed by the browser. Brave blocks, restricts, or randomizes some signals that can be used for fingerprinting.
- Information you provide: An account login, form submission, or permission you grant can identify you or reveal details independently of tracker blocking.
Whether a particular website can connect these inputs to a named person depends on its own data and account practices; the browser protections alone do not establish that.
Does Brave stop browser fingerprinting?
No browser setting can be treated as proof that every fingerprinting technique has been defeated. Fingerprinting combines multiple clues that may seem ordinary on their own, such as browser and operating-system traits, graphics and audio behavior, language preferences, fonts, and hardware capabilities. Some of these values also help sites deliver features, so removing every signal could break pages. Brave’s technical discussion explains the challenge in Brave, Fingerprinting, and Privacy Budgets and its article on browser-language fingerprinting.

What the WebGL and WebGPU update changes
In an update published August 13, 2026, Brave said protections beginning to roll out in version 1.93 replace WebGL vendor and renderer strings with a generic value, return empty WebGPU adapter descriptors, and randomize WebGL extension lists. Brave said the protections are enabled by default on desktop and Android, with a phased rollout described in the update. These are specific changes to graphics-related signals, not a guarantee against all fingerprinting. Brave’s August 2026 GPU fingerprinting update.

Brave describes the design goal as: “The goal is to deny trackers a stable identifier while leaving websites everything they need to render rich experiences for their users.” That is Brave’s stated goal, not an independent measurement of protection across every website or configuration.
Can websites see your IP address in Brave?
The first-party site you visit can still receive your public IP address during an ordinary visit. Shields can block third-party requests so an embedded tracker does not receive the same request, but that does not hide your address from the destination site. Brave identifies Tor windows as an optional way to proxy your IP through intermediate addresses; this is distinct from ordinary Brave browsing. See Brave Browser Features for its description of Tor windows.

What changes when you grant location permission?
Location access is separate from ordinary page loading. If you approve a site’s location request, Brave’s policy says the site may receive an approximate location based on your IP address and operating-system information, which can include nearby Wi-Fi access points. The policy says that location is not sent to Brave through this website-permission process. Brave Browser Privacy Policy.
How do settings and platform affect what is exposed?
Brave says Shields is enabled by default, but users can change its behavior and can turn off Shields or fingerprinting protections for a site when compatibility requires it. Reducing those protections can affect what the site or its embedded third parties can observe. The exact controls and behavior may vary by browser version and platform; Brave’s Shields documentation describes the protection features.

Brave’s privacy policy also describes Safe Browsing requests, which are browser-service traffic and should not be confused with information received by the website you choose to visit. The policy, last updated September 23, 2026, says desktop requests are proxied to protect the user’s IP from Google; Android requests may expose the device IP to Google; and on iOS, Safari-provided functionality uses Google and Tencent Safe Browsing depending on region, with Apple proxying requests. How can you check the signals your Brave setup exposes?
Brave points users to the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Cover Your Tracks tool to inspect fingerprinting protections: Cover Your Tracks. Brave’s August 2026 graphics update notes that the tool reports WebGL vendor and renderer strings. Treat a result as a snapshot of the signals tested, not a certification of anonymity or a test of every signal every website might use.
