What Can USB Ports Do While Your PC Is Off? 3 Useful Things

A shut-down PC may still supply standby power to some USB ports. Learn how that can enable charging, keep an accessory powered or wake the system—and how to check your model’s settings.

Even after a PC shuts down, some USB ports may keep receiving standby power. Depending on the computer, firmware settings and port, you may be able to charge a device, keep an accessory powered or wake the PC with a USB keyboard or mouse. None of these functions is guaranteed on every computer or in every kind of “off” state.

First, know what “off” means

Sleep, hibernation and shutdown are different power states, and USB behavior can change between them. MSI’s instructions, for example, treat hibernate, sleep and power-off as separate cases for USB Type-A power: MSI’s USB power guidance. Check your exact computer or motherboard manual rather than assuming that a port behaves the same way in every state.

1. Charge a phone or other USB device

A USB port can charge a connected device after shutdown if the computer supplies standby power to that port in S5, the soft-off state, and the device and cable are compatible. The ASRock B550M-C R2.0 manual describes its “USB Power Delivery in Soft Off State (S5)” option this way: “If this option is enabled, the USB port will provide power to your devices even when the system is in Power State S5.” That statement applies to that model’s documented option, not every PC. Look in BIOS/UEFI or the manual for a setting such as “USB Power Delivery in S5” or “USB S4/S5 Power.” Some computers also label a particular port for charging. ASUS’s NUC instructions say that, on the products covered by that page, USB-C and USB charging ports can supply power regardless of the USB S4/S5 Power setting described for Type-A ports; this is product-specific and should not be generalized to other computers. If charging does not work, try the manufacturer-designated charging port, confirm the manual says it supplies power in the relevant state, and use a cable with matching connectors. A different cable cannot make an unpowered port supply power. Charging speed depends on the port and device; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal speed.

2. Keep a USB accessory powered

A keyboard light, USB hub indicator or other accessory may stay on after shutdown if its port retains standby power. This is a side effect of the port remaining powered, not a separate feature guaranteed for every accessory or computer.

To stop that standby power, check for energy-saving firmware options such as “ErP Ready” or “Deep Sleep.” ASUS documents ErP settings for disabling standby USB power on supported motherboards, while ASRock documents Deep Sleep for turning off USB power under S5 on supported boards. 3. Wake the PC with a USB keyboard or mouse

Some systems can resume from a supported power state when a USB keyboard or mouse sends input. Look for a setting such as “Resume By USB Device” in BIOS/UEFI, then check the manual to see which states it supports. Wake behavior may differ between sleep, hibernation and full shutdown.

USB wake and USB charging are separate controls on some computers. A powered port does not by itself mean a keyboard or mouse can wake the PC, and enabling wake does not guarantee that a port will charge devices in every state. MSI and ASRock document USB power settings for particular modes and models; use your own manual to confirm the combination available on your system. MSI’s USB power guidance

How to check or change the setting

  1. Identify the exact model. Find the PC or motherboard model in its system information, on its label, or in the manufacturer’s support app.
  2. Check the manual for the relevant state and port. Search for “S5,” “USB power,” “USB charging,” “ErP,” “Deep Sleep” and “USB wake.” Confirm whether the instructions apply to sleep, hibernation or shutdown, and whether they distinguish Type-A, USB-C or a designated charging port.
  3. Open BIOS/UEFI and inspect the matching option. Use the manufacturer’s documented path and labels; firmware menus differ. To retain charging power, the required configuration may involve enabling USB power in S5 or disabling an energy-saving option. MSI, for example, instructs users to disable ErP Ready for the Type-A charging behavior described in its guidance. MSI instructions
  4. Change only the setting that matches your goal, then test. To cut standby USB power, ASUS describes enabling ErP Ready on supported motherboards, while ASRock describes enabling Deep Sleep in S5 on supported boards. These are examples, not universal menu steps. ASUS instructions · ASRock FAQ

If a change has an unexpected effect, return to BIOS/UEFI and restore the previous value. When comparing computers or configurations, check three things separately: supported power states, which ports retain power, and whether USB wake works alongside standby power.
