Plex still tempts me with its polished, convenient experience. But I prefer Jellyfin because its optional plugins let me shape my media server around the tools and services I actually use. That is a personal trade-off, not a claim that Jellyfin is better for every household: Plex can be more turnkey, while Jellyfin gives me more room to customize and control my setup.
What Jellyfin plugins let me change
Jellyfin is free software for managing and streaming personal media, and its project describes it as an alternative to proprietary media servers such as Plex and Emby (Jellyfin’s introduction). Plugins are optional additions, not a requirement for a basic server. Many can be installed through a catalog in server settings; manual installation and official and third-party repositories are also documented (Jellyfin’s plugin documentation).

The appeal is practical: instead of treating a media server as a fixed bundle, I can look for an extension that connects it to another part of my setup or adds a capability I want.
- Metadata: providers and modifiers can affect how library information is retrieved or presented.
- Notifications: integrations can send events to services such as Gotify or Slack.
- Live TV: plugins can connect with tools such as NextPVR or TVHeadend.
- Authentication and channels: documented categories include authentication providers such as LDAP and channels for remote audio or video.
- Other integrations: general-purpose extensions include examples involving Trakt.tv and Kodi.
Those names are examples in Jellyfin’s documentation, not a guarantee that a specific plugin is actively maintained, secure, or compatible with the server version I run. I would check an extension’s own release history and compatibility information before relying on it. Jellyfin’s client-list criteria—such as active development and support for the latest stable server—apply to listed clients, not to every plugin.

Why Plex still tempts me
Plex has a strong case if I want a polished, managed experience with features bundled into a subscription. Plex Pass lists remote streaming, downloads, intro and credit skipping, DVR, and hardware-accelerated streaming among its features. Remote Watch Pass is a narrower option for remote streaming rather than the broader Plex Pass feature set (Plex Pass feature overview; Remote Watch Pass overview).
Client availability and playback on my own devices matter just as much as plugins. I would check the devices I use—TV, phone, streaming box, browser, or game console—rather than assume either server will work equally well everywhere. Jellyfin’s official client list has its own inclusion criteria and may remove entries that are no longer maintained or do not support the latest stable server (Jellyfin client documentation).

What Plex’s remote-video rule means
Plex’s current support article says that, beginning April 29, 2025, remote playback of personal video on affected apps requires an active Plex Pass on the server-admin account, an active Plex Pass on the viewer’s account, or an active Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account. A server owner’s Plex Pass allows other users accessing that server to stream remotely. The affected-app list covers mobile, desktop, web, Roku, smart-TV, and game-console platforms, and Plex says additional apps may be included. Because the platform rollout can change, check Plex’s live remote-playback requirements for the app you use.

This rule concerns remote playback of personal video, not every Plex use: Plex’s support article says it does not apply to Plexamp music or Plex Photos. Local personal-video playback is addressed separately on Plex’s free-versus-paid information. If remote access is central to my setup, I would compare the current requirements with my household’s accounts and devices before choosing a platform.

Transcoding can change the experience—and the cost
Both platforms’ playback depends on whether a client can handle a file’s container, video, audio, and subtitles. Jellyfin aims for direct play when those elements are compatible. Unsupported audio, containers, or subtitles can require direct streaming or conversion; unsupported video codecs require video transcoding. Subtitles that must be burned into the picture can make conversion more demanding (Jellyfin client documentation).
Jellyfin says the client requests local-source transcoding based on its capabilities. Its documentation describes hardware acceleration on modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip GPUs when the required hardware is available. Actual results depend on the hardware, drivers, codecs, client, files, and settings (Jellyfin transcoding documentation).

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Plex also supports hardware-accelerated conversion on supported hardware, but identifies hardware-accelerated streaming as a Plex Pass feature. Plex says using supported video hardware can make conversion faster and more efficient than software transcoding (Plex’s hardware-accelerated streaming guide). If my server often has to convert video, I would test the formats and clients I actually use and include any subscription requirement in the comparison.

Switching from Plex takes planning
Changing servers is not necessarily a one-click transfer. Jellyfin’s migration guide says its internal databases cannot be copied or adjusted easily. It describes third-party scripts that use the API to copy watched status and users from Plex or other instances, and notes that keeping the same file paths can help in some migration scenarios. The guide does not promise a complete transfer of Plex metadata or settings (Jellyfin’s migration guide).

- Verify the result. Check watched status, metadata, and playback on the clients you care about before retiring the old setup.
Why I stay with Jellyfin
I stay because the ability to extend Jellyfin matters more to me than having every convenience arrive as part of a managed product. Plugins give me options for metadata, notifications, integrations, and Live TV, while the open-ended approach fits a server I am willing to configure and maintain. I would choose Plex instead if its client experience, remote-access setup, or bundled features mattered more than that flexibility.
Neither choice is automatically right for every household. The useful test is whether the clients, media formats, remote access, and extensions you depend on work the way you need them to—not whether one platform wins an abstract comparison.
