Humanoid robots can walk, move objects, handle totes and perform selected material-handling sequences—but mostly in demonstrations, research settings or tightly defined industrial workflows. That is not the same as a robot that can reliably adapt to any task, work a full shift without support, or do ordinary household chores. The most useful way to judge a capability is to ask what task was completed, under what conditions, and whether the result was a demonstration, a customer pilot or repeated commercial operation.
What humanoid robots can do now
Today’s humanoid robots can perform specific physical tasks in environments designed or prepared for them. Their strongest evidence is in locomotion and material handling, not open-ended assistance.

Walk and move through human-oriented spaces
Walking and locomotion are established demonstration capabilities. However, reliably navigating clutter, responding to unexpected changes and sharing dynamic spaces with people remain difficult. The UK Government’s 2025 assessment identifies safe mobility, balance and operation in unstructured environments as continuing challenges (UK Government Office for Science, 2025).
Lift, place and move objects
Humanoid robots have demonstrated tasks such as lifting and placing boxes, sorting and cleaning. Those examples, summarized in a 2024 report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, are useful historical context rather than a complete inventory of what is available in 2026 (USCC, 2024).

Complete connected sequences in research settings
In an August 2025 report, Toyota Research Institute and Boston Dynamics described Atlas packing, sorting and organizing by combining walking, crouching and lifting. Researchers also introduced physical changes mid-task and reported that Atlas adjusted. This is evidence of a research demonstration, not proof of general-purpose autonomy in homes or workplaces (Boston Dynamics, August 2025).
Handle totes at customer facilities
Agility Robotics says Digit 4 has operated at customer sites, including GXO. The company reported that Digit handled 100,000 totes at one facility with approximately 98% accuracy while on-task. These figures describe a company-reported result at one site; they are not an independently audited figure or a general accuracy rate for humanoid robots (Agility Robotics, 2026).

What the limits mean in practice
A robot that completes one task in a controlled demonstration has not necessarily shown it can repeat that task across different objects, layouts, interruptions and failure cases. The UK Government’s 2025 rapid assessment groups the main challenges into several areas:
- Autonomy and adaptability: handling unfamiliar situations and making sound decisions when conditions change.
- Dexterity: manipulating objects precisely, especially when tasks require fine control.
- Mobility and safety: keeping balance and operating safely around people in unstructured environments.
- Speed and endurance: matching human task speed while maintaining useful battery runtime and energy efficiency.
- Reliability and upkeep: withstanding routine use, maintenance needs and operational disruptions.
- Interaction and infrastructure: sustaining interaction with users and managing compute requirements, including reliance on connectivity.
The assessment says applications needing more dexterity, mobility and autonomy are more uncertain, while cost-effectiveness, public response and safety remain unresolved. The USCC’s 2024 report also highlights battery storage and actuator limitations, and the difficulty of reasoning through unexpected situations. It compared some demonstration tasks unfavorably with average human speed, based on analysis of company demonstration videos; that dated analysis is not a current standardized benchmark (USCC, 2024).

These constraints matter particularly for domestic use. A home changes from room to room and day to day: objects move, surfaces vary and tasks are rarely presented in a consistent sequence. The cited evidence does not establish that humanoid robots can yet provide reliable, general household assistance.
How to tell a demo from a deployed capability
When assessing a robot’s claimed ability, look beyond a successful clip or a headline metric. A customer-site deployment, a pilot and repeated commercial operation are distinct levels of evidence, and none automatically establishes broad capability.

- Setting: Was the task performed in a research lab, a demonstration area or an operating customer facility?
- Control: Was the robot autonomous, teleoperated or steered by a person using a tablet? Boston Dynamics says Atlas can operate in all three modes, so visible task completion alone does not establish autonomy (Boston Dynamics, January 2026).
- Support: How much task-specific training, supervision and on-site assistance were required? Boston Dynamics describes a customer evaluation process that includes use-case assessment and application-specific training (Boston Dynamics Atlas product page).
- Repeatability: Was performance reported across shifts, varied objects and changing conditions, or for a particular task and site?
- Verification: Are performance figures independently audited, or reported by the manufacturer? Company figures can be informative, but should be read as company claims unless independently verified.
Current examples: Atlas and Digit
These examples illustrate different capabilities and maturity signals; their published specifications are not a head-to-head benchmark. Definitions and test conditions can differ, and manufacturer announcements are not independently comparable testing.

| Agility Robotics Digit 4 | Agility reports customer-site operations and a milestone of 100,000 totes at one GXO facility with approximately 98% accuracy while on-task (Agility Robotics, 2026). | These are manufacturer-reported figures for one facility, not an independent audit or a universal performance rate. |
| Agility Robotics Digit 5 | Agility’s September 2026 announcement lists a 50 lb repeated-lift capacity, 90-minute runtime and nine-minute charge, and names depalletizing, machine tending, kitting, sequencing, inspection and palletizing as target workflows (Agility Robotics, September 2026). | These are manufacturer-announced specifications and target workflows, not independently established results at customer scale. |
For context on cost, the UK Government’s 2025 assessment shows an estimated single-robot cost of $40,000–$150,000. It is an estimate reproduced in the assessment, not a current quote or universal price; the same assessment says cost-effectiveness relative to other automation remains uncertain (UK Government Office for Science, 2025).

What to compare when evaluating a humanoid robot
For a real task, headline specifications matter less than whether a system can perform the required work reliably within the intended operation. Compare:
- the range of tasks it can complete and how consistently it repeats them;
- whether it works autonomously or relies on teleoperation or steering;
- payload and reach in the relevant task, rather than a single maximum figure in isolation;
- runtime, charging arrangements and the effect of downtime on the workflow;
- tool or end-effector changes and the tasks those tools enable;
- training, supervision, maintenance and safety requirements; and
- integration with existing warehouse, factory or fleet-management systems.
For example, Agility lists depalletizing and machine tending among Digit 5’s target workflows, but a business considering either task would still need evidence that the robot can perform its particular version of the job at the required pace, with suitable integration and support. A list of target applications is not a record of completed deployments.
Can humanoid robots do household chores?
Some research demonstrations show humanoid robots performing sequences that include organizing or handling objects, but the evidence cited here does not show a general-purpose home robot ready to take on ordinary household work. Household assistance requires more than completing a rehearsed sequence: a robot must adapt to varied rooms and objects, respond safely to people and unexpected events, and work reliably without constant supervision. Those capabilities remain among the challenges identified by the UK Government’s 2025 assessment.
