What Can Home Assistant Do Besides Control Smart Devices?

Home Assistant can respond to household events, show useful status, accept voice commands and organize energy readings—not just control smart devices.

Home Assistant can turn connected devices into a household automation and information system: it can react to events, show what is happening, accept voice commands and organize energy data. Its usefulness depends on the devices and integrations available in your home, but it is not limited to a screen of on-and-off switches.

Automations make devices respond to what happens at home

An automation follows a trigger-condition-action pattern: a trigger starts it, conditions determine whether it should continue, and actions tell Home Assistant what to do. For example, a garage-door sensor could trigger a check of whether anyone is home; if the house is empty and the door is open, an action could send a notification. The precise result depends on the sensors, integrations and notification services configured.

Scripts serve a related but different purpose. A script is a reusable sequence of actions that a person or another Home Assistant feature can start. You might create one sequence for a “leaving home” routine and call it from a dashboard button or an automation. Automations begin in response to triggers; scripts begin when something invokes them. Home Assistant documents these building blocks in its automation and script documentation and explains how to perform actions.

Dashboards show household status as well as controls

A dashboard can be a status board, a control panel or a mix of both. Home Assistant can generate a dashboard from detected devices, and you can customize it with cards that display information or provide controls. A family-facing view might put room temperatures, lights and door status together; a kitchen tablet could focus on a few frequently used controls, while a more detailed view could surface additional household information.

This makes the dashboard useful even when nobody is changing a device: it can make the home’s current state easier to check at a glance. The specific cards and readings available depend on the entities supplied by your integrations. See the Home Assistant dashboard documentation for how dashboards are built and customized.

Assist adds voice as another way to interact

Assist is Home Assistant’s natural-language interface for controlling a smart home. It can be used through the companion app, dedicated voice hardware or DIY devices built with ESPHome. Voice is an additional interface to the entities and capabilities Home Assistant can access; it does not make an incompatible device controllable by itself. The Assist overview describes the available routes.

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Local voice processing

A fully local Assist pipeline is possible, but it takes more than a microphone: it needs listening hardware and speech-to-text and text-to-speech components. Home Assistant documents Speech-to-Phrase or Whisper for speech-to-text and Piper for text-to-speech. Speech-to-Phrase is designed to run quickly on modest hardware, but it supports a narrower set of commands than more open-ended speech processing. Local processing can keep voice handling on your own equipment, with the trade-off that setup and hardware choices matter. Follow the fully local voice assistant setup guide for the documented pipeline.

Cloud-assisted voice

Cloud options can reduce the amount of local voice processing a household needs to set up, but they involve sending relevant processing to a cloud service. The right choice depends on how much setup you want to take on, what hardware you have, and your privacy preferences. Home Assistant’s homepage says, “Home Assistant keeps your data local, no need for a cloud,” while also noting that it may fall back to cloud access when local communication is unavailable. That is a description of the project’s approach, not a guarantee that every device or voice configuration operates locally.

Energy monitoring turns readings into household context

The Energy dashboard can organize electricity, gas and water data. Readings can come from compatible energy monitors, smart plugs, solar inverters or utility meters, so the dashboard’s usefulness depends on having integrations that provide appropriate data. Home Assistant’s energy management documentation explains the supported data sources and setup requirements.

Once readings are available, energy information can help you understand usage patterns and inform schedules or automations—for example, choosing when to run a controllable appliance based on a household’s own readings and rules. That is a way to use measurements in decisions, not a promise of lower bills. Also check what a sensor actually reports: an instantaneous power reading is not the same as accumulated energy, and some uses require energy data or a conversion from power over time.

What to expect before building around it

  • Integrations determine what Home Assistant can see and do. A dashboard, automation or voice request can only work with devices and services exposed through configured integrations.
  • Local control varies by device. Home Assistant emphasizes local operation, but the project notes that cloud access may be used when local communication is unavailable.
  • Optional hardware is optional. Dedicated voice devices, listening hardware and energy monitors can add capabilities, but they are not prerequisites for using every part of Home Assistant.
  • Start with one useful outcome. A status dashboard, an alert for a door left open or a clearly defined routine can show whether your existing devices and integrations support the household task you care about.
