The common home-theater setup uses one RCA lead from a receiver’s Sub Out or LFE output to the LFE input on a powered subwoofer. Other systems may need stereo RCA connections or speaker wire instead, so check the port labels and manuals before connecting.
Choose the cable by matching the ports
“Audio cable” can refer to different connection types. For a subwoofer, the important question is what output your receiver or amplifier provides and what input the subwoofer accepts. A cable that fits physically is not necessarily the right connection for the signal.

| Source output | Subwoofer input | Typical connection |
|---|---|---|
| AV receiver Subwoofer or LFE output | Powered subwoofer LFE input | One RCA cable |
| Two-channel amplifier pre-out | Powered subwoofer stereo RCA line inputs | RCA line connection; follow the equipment instructions |
| Amplifier speaker outputs | Subwoofer with high-level inputs | Speaker wire |
| Suitable external amplifier for a passive subwoofer | Passive subwoofer terminals | Speaker wire from the amplifier |
These are common connection categories, not a guarantee that every receiver or subwoofer has every port. Check the labels on both devices and consult their manuals.
When an RCA cable is the right choice
AV receiver to powered subwoofer
For a typical home-theater system, connect the receiver’s dedicated Sub Out or LFE output to the powered subwoofer’s LFE input with one RCA cable. Focal’s assistance guidance describes connecting a subwoofer’s single LFE input to the amplifier’s dedicated subwoofer output. Klipsch likewise identifies an RCA sub or woofer line output as the standard powered-subwoofer connection in its receiver connection guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- [CONNECTIVITY] FosPower's premium Subwoofer single RCA male to single RCA male audio cable connects a subwoofer speaker to a stereo receiver, audio component or surround sound system. Great for connecting audio components with a single RCA Port/jack.
- [24K GOLD-PLATED CONNECTORS] These cables are made from high quality 24k gold-plated connectors that are corrosion resistant and reduce tarnish.
- [DUAL LAYER BRAIDED AND FOIL SHIELDING] The cables' dual layer shields are braided with copper and protected by aluminum foil, which provides cable flexibility and greatly reduces unwanted EMI/RFI interference.
- [PF INSULATOR] The cores of FosPower's cables are covered with polyethylene foam (PF) dielectric insulator, which greatly minimizes signal loss. The tin plated copper core reduces oxidation and increases the wire life.
- [LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY] Includes a Limited Lifetime Warranty
If both devices have those matching RCA ports, an RCA subwoofer cable is an appropriate cable type. Choose a length that reaches the equipment in your installation, and verify the port labels before buying.
Stereo pre-out to RCA line inputs
A two-channel amplifier’s pre-out may connect to a powered subwoofer’s left and right RCA line inputs. The exact wiring can vary by model, so use the instructions for both devices rather than assuming that every subwoofer handles the inputs in the same way.

- [SUBWOOFER CABLE WITH ZERO HUMMING] With FosPower's single RCA male to single RCA male cable, remove the humming noise coming from your audio. This cable is great for connecting audio components with a single RCA Port/jack, such as a subwoofer speaker to a stereo receiver, an audio component or surround sound system.

Some subwoofers with left and right line inputs accept a mono signal through just one input. Klipsch’s guidance for the models it describes recommends using the L/LFE jack for a mono subwoofer signal. Treat that as model-specific advice, not a universal rule.
Powered and passive subwoofers need different setups
Powered subwoofer
A powered subwoofer has its own amplifier. It can typically receive a line-level signal through an RCA input; some models also offer high-level speaker-wire inputs. Use whichever connection the manufacturer specifies for your system.

Passive subwoofer
A passive subwoofer does not have its own amplifier. It needs an appropriate external amplifier connected to its terminals with speaker wire. An RCA cable can carry a line-level audio signal, but it does not supply the power needed to drive a passive subwoofer. Klipsch explains this distinction in its powered-versus-passive subwoofer guidance.
When to use speaker wire instead
Use speaker wire only when the equipment provides the matching speaker-level connection. One valid arrangement is an amplifier’s speaker outputs connected to a subwoofer’s high-level inputs; another is a suitable amplifier connected to a passive subwoofer. Klipsch notes that some subwoofers have high-level inputs for receivers or preamps without an RCA subwoofer output in its receiver connection instructions.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 35 foot subwoofer audio cable for connecting subwoofer speaker to a stereo receiver, sound system, or other compatible audio device
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Corrosion-resistant gold-plated RCA connectors; split-tip center pins for optimal pressure and conductivity; tough, yet flexible PVC exterior
- QUALITY SOUND & BASS: Expertly transmits low-frequency signals generated by subwoofers, ensuring exceptional sound quality and bass response
- FOR DEVICES WITH RCA PORTS: Works with RCA ports, S/Pdif, digital, and composite video interfaces
Do not connect speaker wire to RCA line-level ports, or assume an RCA cable can replace speaker wire at speaker terminals. They serve different connections. Confirm that the inputs and outputs are designed to work together before wiring anything.

Check before connecting
- Read the labels on the receiver or amplifier and the subwoofer. Identify whether the source has a Sub Out, LFE output, pre-out, or speaker outputs, and whether the sub has an LFE, line-level, high-level, or passive terminal connection.
- Choose the corresponding connection shown in the table, then check both manuals for the model-specific wiring arrangement.
- If using RCA, confirm that both ends have compatible line-level RCA ports and that the cable reaches between the components.
- If using speaker wire, confirm that the subwoofer has high-level inputs or is passive and connected to an appropriate amplifier.
The connection guidance establishes which cable types match which ports; it does not establish that a particular cable brand or a more expensive cable improves sound.
