Relay says client matters are not sent to an outside AI provider, but that is a vendor representation—not an independently verified security finding. Whether Briefly fits a firm depends on its filing needs, hardware, network and update requirements, and security review.
What Briefly is designed to do
Relay presents Briefly as a conversational interface for filing tasks and broader law-firm workflows, running on an office machine. Its product page describes the following capabilities; these are vendor claims, not independently tested results.

Filing and document work
- Citation checks: Relay says the software checks citations against an offline reporter snapshot and flags subsequent history.
- Tables: It can generate tables of authorities and contents in a firm’s house style and export them to Word, preserving formatting, according to Relay.
- Argument review: Relay says this runs on the office machine.
- Deadlines: The product is described as extracting dates from filings and orders.
Practice workflows
Relay also advertises background drafting of time entries for review before transfer to Clio, PracticePanther, or a spreadsheet. It describes automation rules that run on the firm’s machine and queue drafts for sign-off. The page also describes a shared office server for partners, associates, and staff, with chats, documents, and matters shared across seats. Confirm the current team configuration and controls with Relay before treating these as procurement specifications.

Relay says, “Nothing about a client matter is ever sent to an outside AI provider. Every inference runs on the computer in your office.” The company says its server reports licensing and update information such as seats, version, and health—not client files. Those statements describe Relay’s claimed data path; the reviewed product information does not establish an independent audit or prove that every deployment has no other network activity. Relay says its design maps to ABA Model Rule 1.6 and state analogues, but that is not a certification or a legal conclusion about a firm’s compliance. Relay’s product page

For a firm, “local” should prompt specific questions rather than end the security review. Ask for a documented account of network connections, licensing and update checks, identity and access controls, backups, logs, and how shared matter data is protected. Also establish who can approve automated drafts and how the firm verifies generated work.
How Briefly differs from other local-first tools
Local-first products can address very different jobs. The descriptions below come from the products’ own pages; they are not independent security or performance assessments.

These distinctions matter. Briefly’s advertised filing functions and firm-wide workflows are not interchangeable with an offline writing tool or a local document reader. Conversely, local document processing alone does not establish current legal research, court filing, or practice-management capabilities.

Relay says the office machine is a separate purchase sized and quoted according to the firm’s caseload. It also describes a one-time software option for firms with qualifying existing hardware. Relay’s page displayed early-adopter pricing of $50 per user per month for one year during the early-adopter period, followed by $150 per user per month when that period closes; qualifying existing hardware was listed with a $300 one-time software fee. - Network behavior: Request a complete account of connections for inference, licensing, updates, telemetry, and support, including what information each connection sends.
- Authority and citation coverage: Ask which jurisdictions, reporters, and update dates the offline reporter snapshot covers, and how the firm can inspect or verify the sources behind a flagged result.
- Human review: Confirm which actions create drafts versus take action, and how sign-off is required for filing-related work, deadlines, and billing entries.
- Team access: Review user roles, matter separation, permissions, logging, and the consequences of sharing chats or documents across seats.
- Operations: Clarify installation, updates, backups, recovery, hardware maintenance, and what happens when the office server or network is unavailable.
- Fit and cost: Have Relay size the machine to the firm’s caseload and obtain current written software, hardware, and support terms.
Local execution can reduce reliance on external AI processing, but it does not by itself demonstrate that a particular firm meets its confidentiality, ethical, or regulatory obligations. The firm remains responsible for reviewing the product’s full data flow and operational design.
