A script that needs Bash 4.0 or later will fail on the Bash 3.2 that macOS ships at /bin/bash in one of two ways. Either a newer builtin is reported as “command not found” when the script reaches it, or the parser rejects a line before the script does any work. Not every failure of this kind is a Bash problem, though. Some come from which interpreter actually runs the script, and some come from macOS command-line utilities that behave differently from their Linux counterparts.
Separate the three variables before changing any code
When a script fails on a Mac, three separate things could be responsible, and they need different fixes:
- The interpreter version. The script may be running under Bash 3.2 when its author tested under Bash 4 or 5.
- Syntax and builtins. Newer Bash adds grammar, expansions, options, and builtins that the older shell does not have.
- External utilities. Commands such as
sed, find, anddateon macOS are typically BSD-derived, and option sets differ from GNU versions.
Only the middle item is a Bash 3.2 compatibility issue. A failure in the third item will look the same to a user but needs a different fix.
Confirm which Bash runs the script
A script’s shebang, not the shell a user types into, decides the interpreter. A script beginning with #!/bin/bash runs the binary at that path even if the user’s terminal runs zsh or a newer Bash installed elsewhere. A secondary macOS guide reports that /bin/bash is Bash 3.2.57 and that zsh has been the default interactive shell since Catalina; that guide is not Apple documentation, so check the version on the machine in question rather than relying on the claim. Your own check takes seconds:

The Bash 4.0 features that break on 3.2
The GNU Bash FAQ, hosted by PSI GIT Service, identifies the features below as Bash 4.0 additions. The table lists the typical failure on Bash 3.2 and a replacement to consider. The error wording shown is typical rather than universal, so confirm it with a minimal reproducer on the target machine.
| Newer Bash feature | Typical behavior on Bash 3.2 | Replacement to consider |
|---|---|---|
Associative arrays (declare -A) |
declare rejects -A as an invalid option. |
A case function for a fixed set of keys, parallel indexed arrays, or an explicit Bash 4+ requirement. Choose the replacement only if it preserves the data model. |
mapfile / readarray |
Reported as mapfile: command not found in a 2026 GitHub issue about Bash 3.2 compatibility. |
A while IFS= read -r loop fed by process substitution (see below). |
shopt -s globstar and ** |
shopt does not recognize globstar, and ** matches one directory level, just like *. |
A find-based traversal, or a Bash 4+ requirement. Do not assume recursive matching. |
Case-modifying expansions (${var,,}, ${var^^}) |
Typically a “bad substitution” error. | A documented external tool where locale behavior is understood, or a Bash 4+ requirement. |
|& pipeline operator |
Typically a syntax error near the unexpected token &. |
Explicit redirection, such as cmd 2>&1 | next, and a check that descriptor ordering matches what you intended. |
This list is representative, not exhaustive. It shows which constructs are Bash 4.0 additions; it does not establish that a particular paid script uses them or that every Mac will show the same failure.

“Command not found” at runtime
A message such as mapfile: command not found means the shell reached a name it does not recognize as a command or builtin. Check whether that name is a Bash builtin introduced after 3.2 before assuming a missing package. If it is, the fix is a Bash-level rewrite, not an installation.
Parse or expansion errors that stop the script early
Bash reads a compound command, such as an if, while, or function body, in full before running it. A line with unsupported grammar inside that block can stop the script before any of the block’s commands execute, even when the failing line is never reached at runtime. Errors of this kind point at syntax, not at a missing command. Use the exact diagnostic and a minimal reproducer; do not assume one universal message.
Wrong interpreter
If the script works when run as bash script.sh but fails when run as ./script.sh, the shebang is selecting a different interpreter from the one you tested. The same applies when a user installs a newer Bash and still sees failures: installing a package does not change /bin/bash or the shebang.

Variables disappear after a pipeline
In a pipeline such as cmd | while read line; do count=$((count+1)); done, the loop runs in a subshell on Bash 3.2 and on later versions alike. After the pipeline ends, count is unchanged. This looks like a compatibility bug but is ordinary shell behavior. The process-substitution pattern below avoids it because the loop runs in the current shell.
BSD utility differences
An error from sed, find, date, or xargs comes from the utility, not the interpreter. Read the error message and the option that triggered it, then test that command alone in the same environment. Fixing Bash syntax will not resolve it.

- Read the first line of the script with
head -n 1 script.shand note the interpreter path. - Run
/bin/bash --versionon the affected Mac, andcommand -v bashto see what PATH would select. - Reproduce the failure with the same entry point the user uses:
./script.shandbash script.shcan select different interpreters. - Match the exact message to one of the layers above: interpreter, syntax, builtin, or external utility.
- Reproduce the suspect construct in a three-line file run under the same interpreter. If it fails there, the construct is the cause. If it passes, look at the utilities or environment.
Replace mapfile with a loop that works on Bash 3.2
The pattern below reads command output line by line into an indexed array. Process substitution, <(...), depends on /dev/fd support on the system, so run a one-line test on the target Mac before relying on it.

lines=()
while IFS= read -r line || [[ -n $line ]]; do
lines+=("$line")
done < <(cmd)
Three details matter for correctness:
IFS=preserves leading and trailing whitespace, and-rkeeps backslashes literal.|| [[ -n $line ]]keeps a final line that has no trailing newline. Without it, that line is silently dropped.- Process substitution does not pass the producing command's exit status to the script. If
cmdcan fail, capture its output first, check the status, and then read it:out=$(cmd) || exit 1followed bywhile IFS= read -r line || [[ -n $line ]]; do ...; done <<< "$out". Note that$(...)removes trailing newlines from the captured output.
Choose a compatibility policy
There are two defensible policies, and they carry different costs for the people who run the script.
| Policy | Minimum interpreter | Burden on users | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Bash 3.2 compatibility | Bash 3.2 at /bin/bash |
None beyond the stock Mac | Replacement logic must be tested, and rewrites can change data handling. |
| Require Bash 4.0 or later | Bash 4.0+ invoked by explicit path | Installing and locating a newer Bash, typically through Homebrew | Support requests from users whose installed Bash is not the one the script calls. |
If you require a newer Bash, name it in the shebang rather than relying on /bin/bash. #!/usr/bin/env bash uses whichever bash comes first in PATH, which may differ between users. Homebrew typically installs under /opt/homebrew on Apple silicon and under /usr/local on Intel Macs; brew --prefix bash reports the location on a given machine.
Whichever policy you choose, have the script refuse to run on an unsupported interpreter. The check must sit above any Bash 4-only syntax, and it should not be inside a block that contains that syntax, because the whole block is parsed first:

Use a check like this when Bash 4 is required. When Bash 3.2 compatibility is the goal, run the final script under Bash 3.2 and under your production version, because passing on one does not establish the other.
What this article does not establish
The sources behind this guidance are the GNU Bash FAQ, the Bash 3.2 FAQ as a historical project reference, a 2026 GitHub issue that documents one mapfile failure, and a secondary macOS guide for the stock version and default shell. None of them audits a specific paid script, and none provides an exhaustive list of macOS utility differences. Treat the table above as a checklist of likely causes, and confirm each one on the machine where the failure occurs.
