What Breaks When You Disable Windows 11 Fast Startup?

Turning off Windows 11 Fast Startup makes Shut down perform a full shutdown, so the next start may take longer. Restart already does a full boot, and Hibernate can remain available separately.

Usually, nothing breaks. Turning off Fast Startup changes what happens after you choose Shut down: Windows stops saving the kernel session for a quicker next start and instead shuts down fully. The next power-on may take longer, but it starts Windows fresh. Restart already performs a full boot, and standard Hibernate can remain available as a separate option.

What Fast Startup does—and what changes when you turn it off

Fast Startup is a hybrid shutdown. Windows logs off your user session but saves the kernel session—the core of the operating system, including its loaded drivers—to a hibernation file. On the next power-on, Windows restores that saved kernel state instead of starting it from scratch. Microsoft describes this as an S4 power transition, even though it looks like an ordinary shutdown to you. Microsoft’s System power states documentation explains the distinction.

With Fast Startup disabled, choosing Shut down ends the session fully (S5). The next power-on follows a full boot path. That means the main practical change is potentially slower startup after Shut down, not damage to Windows or your files. Microsoft says a full shutdown and boot takes significantly longer than faster transition states, but there is no single reliable number of extra seconds for every Windows 11 PC. Hardware, firmware, startup apps, services, and other workload all affect the time. Microsoft’s power-state guidance and its startup and shutdown engineering guidance describe those factors.

Action or setting What Windows does What you may notice
Shut down with Fast Startup on Logs off users and saves the kernel session to a hibernation file; the next power-on uses the Fast Startup path. The next start may be quicker, but it is not the same as a full shutdown.
Shut down with Fast Startup off Performs a full shutdown (S5); the next power-on starts Windows fully. A fresh boot path, which may take longer after Shut down.
Restart Performs a full shutdown and boot; Fast Startup does not apply. A fresh Windows start without changing the Fast Startup setting. Microsoft documents this distinction.

What does not break

Restart does not become less complete

Restart already takes the full-boot route, whether Fast Startup is enabled or not. If you need Windows to start with a fresh kernel and driver state, use Restart; switching off Fast Startup is not necessary for that. Microsoft’s Fast Startup troubleshooting article makes this point for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, and its technical documentation describes Restart as a full shutdown and boot. Microsoft Support: Fast startup causes hibernation or shutdown to fail

Standard Hibernate can remain available

Fast Startup and Hibernate are related because both use hibernation technology, but they are separate choices. Turning off Fast Startup does not, by itself, turn off the separate Hibernate option. Hibernate may not be available on every PC. On Windows 11, Microsoft’s guidance for checking power options is Control Panel → System and Security → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings that are currently unavailable. The available options and labels can vary by device, Windows version, or policy. Microsoft’s shut down, sleep, or hibernate guidance

When disabling Fast Startup can help

Because Fast Startup preserves the kernel session and drivers, a full shutdown ends that saved state. Turning it off may be useful when troubleshooting an issue that continues across Shut down and power-on cycles and you want those cycles to start Windows fresh. That is a reason to try the setting, not a guarantee: the available documentation does not establish that disabling Fast Startup fixes any particular Windows 11 problem.

For a one-time fresh start, Restart is the simpler option. It already performs a full boot and does not depend on the Fast Startup setting.

Will your PC still wake over the network?

Do not assume that disabling Fast Startup enables Wake-on-LAN (WOL) from a fully powered-off PC. Microsoft’s power-state table documents WOL from S3 sleep or S4 hibernate, but not from Fast Startup or S5 full off. Whether network wake works in a particular setup also depends on the device’s firmware and network-adapter configuration. See Microsoft’s power-state and WOL documentation.

Windows 10 update advice is not proof of a Windows 11 problem

Microsoft has documented a case in which some updates may not install with Fast Startup in Windows 10; its guidance says Restart can complete the full boot needed in that situation. That article is explicitly about Windows 10, so it does not establish a Windows 11 update defect. Microsoft Support: Updates may not be installed with Fast Startup in Windows 10

Likewise, Microsoft’s statement that disabling Fast Startup is not recommended appears in guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. It should not be treated as a universal recommendation for every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft’s article states its supported Windows versions.

Should you turn it off?

  • Leave it on if you value a potentially quicker start after Shut down and do not need that action to end the saved kernel session.
  • Turn it off if you prefer Shut down to perform a full shutdown, or if you are troubleshooting a problem that persists through ordinary Shut down and power-on cycles.
  • Use Restart when you need a full boot once, without changing the setting.

There is no established, controlled Windows 11 comparison here that quantifies a power-use or battery-life change from switching Fast Startup off, so those effects should not be assumed.
