Disabling Windows 11’s advanced sharing controls can make your PC harder to find on a local network or stop it from hosting shared folders and printers. It does not, by itself, delete files or remove each folder’s individual sharing configuration. The effect depends on which control you change: network discovery, file and printer sharing, the network profile, or password-protected sharing.
What each sharing setting controls
These options affect different parts of network sharing, so turning one off is not equivalent to turning all of them off. Microsoft’s instructions place Network discovery and File and printer sharing under Private networks, while Password-protected sharing is a separate option under All Networks. See Microsoft’s file-sharing instructions.

| Setting | What changes when it is off | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Network discovery | Other devices may not find this PC through Windows network browsing. The PC’s data and individual share configurations are not thereby deleted. | Private networks |
| File and printer sharing | This PC’s role in hosting shared folders and printers over the local network is interrupted. | Private networks |
| Network profile set to Public | Windows hides the PC from other devices and prevents using it for file and printer sharing. | The active network connection |
| Password-protected sharing | Changes password protection for network shares; it is a separate access-control choice, not a discovery setting. | All Networks |
What happens if you turn off Network discovery?
Other computers may no longer see your PC in File Explorer’s Network view. Microsoft says that if File Explorer shows “Network discovery is turned off…,” discovery must be enabled to see devices on the network that are sharing files. This is a browsing and discoverability issue; it does not mean the shared files were erased.

What happens if you turn off File and printer sharing?
The PC will no longer serve as a normal host for its network-shared folders and printers while this control is off. Other devices may be unable to use resources shared from that PC, even if they can still find the computer. Microsoft’s network printer instructions also require File and printer sharing for printer sharing.
This setting governs sharing hosted by the computer where it is changed. It is not the same as removing a specific share, and it does not delete the underlying files.

How the Public and Private network profiles change sharing
The network profile is a separate consideration from the advanced sharing switches. Microsoft says a Public profile hides the PC from other devices and does not allow the PC to be used for file and printer sharing. A Private profile makes the PC discoverable and supports file and printer sharing. Microsoft recommends Private only for a network whose people and devices you know and trust; do not switch an unfamiliar public Wi-Fi connection to Private just to make sharing work. See Microsoft’s overview of essential network settings.
What Password-protected sharing changes
Password-protected sharing is an access-protection option, separate from Network discovery and File and printer sharing. Turning it off changes password protection for network sharing; it is not required in order to turn discovery or file and printer sharing off. Microsoft includes turning it off as one troubleshooting step, not as a universal prerequisite for sharing.

How to stop sharing one folder without changing broad settings
If your goal is to stop sharing a particular file or folder while leaving other network sharing alone, use the specific share’s removal action. Microsoft documents this File Explorer path:
- Open File Explorer and locate the file or folder.
- Select Give access to.
- Select Remove access.
That is distinct from switching off a broad network setting: disabling discovery or file and printer sharing should not be described as deleting the file or removing its individual share configuration.

If sharing stops working, check the host and network
For file sharing, Microsoft recommends checking that the computers are on the same network, that Wi-Fi is set to Private where the network is trusted, and that Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled under Private networks. Its troubleshooting guidance also lists four services to check for automatic startup:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Function Discovery Provider Host
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
These are troubleshooting checks, not a claim that every sharing problem requires changing all four services.
For a shared printer, also confirm that the printer is installed and working on its primary Windows PC, that it is shared there, and that the host PC is powered on and connected to the network. If the printer disappears, the cause may be discovery, sharing, host availability, or printer configuration rather than a failed printer.
