For a standard H.264 YouTube Live stream at 720p, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps. YouTube’s current live-encoder recommendations are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, at both 30 and 60 frames per second. Keep about 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, then test your actual setup before going live.
Recommended 720p bitrate by codec
YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations vary by video codec, not by whether you stream 30 or 60 fps. The values below are video bitrate; audio bitrate is separate.
| Resolution and frame rate | Video codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current recommendations for live encoder ingestion. The minimum is not the recommended target: use it only as a lower bound, not as the setting to aim for when your connection can sustain the recommended rate. YouTube’s live settings are separate from its recommendations for encoding prerecorded video uploads. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.
How much upload speed does 720p streaming need?
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate. For an 8 Mbps H.264 video stream, that is 1.6 Mbps of headroom, or about 9.6 Mbps of available upload capacity; rounding to roughly 10 Mbps is a practical starting point. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s 20% guidance, not a separate platform threshold. If other people or devices share the connection, or the available upload rate fluctuates, allow more room.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Remember that the stream’s total bitrate includes audio as well as video. YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo audio. Check your encoder’s configured audio rate and include it when planning bandwidth. Test upload capacity close to the time and place you will stream; a speed-test result does not guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transfer.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) where your encoder offers it.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Its 720p table gives the same bitrate recommendation for 30 and 60 fps within each codec.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio in its advanced settings.
These are ingest settings, not a promise of uninterrupted playback. Confirm the codec and available options in your encoder, since not every software or hardware encoder supports every codec. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.

Choose 30 or 60 fps without changing the bitrate target
Use the frame rate that fits your content and capture setup. YouTube’s listed 720p recommendations are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at both 30 and 60 fps, so the published table does not call for a higher bitrate just because you choose 60 fps. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen stream plus headroom, select a quality that better fits the connection rather than assuming the recommended figure will work under every condition.
Test before you go live
- Set the encoder: Choose 720p, the intended frame rate and a supported codec. Use the corresponding video bitrate from the table, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Check total bandwidth: Add audio to video bitrate and leave roughly 20% upload headroom. Run an upload speed test on the network you will use.
- Make a representative test: Include the kind of movement and audio you expect in the actual stream; a static screen is not a useful test for a fast-moving event.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages: Use the information shown during the test or broadcast to spot ingest or connection problems. If performance is unreliable, lower the selected quality to suit the connection and test again.
YouTube advises testing before an event and monitoring stream health. Its guidance does not establish one universal upload-speed downgrade threshold, because usable capacity depends on the actual connection. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Bitrate is not the same as latency
Latency is the delay between capture and playback, not a bitrate setting. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters most when viewers need to interact with you in near real time. For a stream with little audience interaction, lower latency may be less important. Do not treat lowering bitrate as a general latency fix. YouTube Help: Stream latency.
