It is not the number of trades made, a count of Bitcoin bought on the spot market, or a tally of bullish bets. Rising or falling OI shows that the outstanding contract inventory has changed; by itself, it does not tell you which direction Bitcoin’s price will move.
What Bitcoin open interest measures
The CFTC’s Futures Glossary defines open interest as the total number of futures contracts in a market or delivery month that have been entered into and not yet liquidated by an offsetting transaction or fulfilled by delivery. In practical terms, OI is the inventory of contracts still outstanding at a point in time.

For a futures contract, every open position has both a long side and a short side. Each contract counted in OI therefore represents a matched obligation between counterparties—not one extra bullish position. A rising reading means more contracts remain open; a falling reading means contracts have been closed, offset, or otherwise settled. Neither change identifies which side initiated the activity.

Volume measures how much trading took place during a period. OI measures how many contracts remain open at the time of the reading. A contract can contribute to volume when it is traded and still contribute to OI if the position remains open afterward. Trading that closes an existing position can increase volume while reducing OI.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Volume: trading activity over a specified interval.
- Open interest: contracts still outstanding at a specified time.
Binance Academy explains this distinction for crypto futures and options. Because the measures answer different questions, a high-volume session does not necessarily produce higher OI.
Does rising or falling OI mean Bitcoin is bullish or bearish?
No—not on its own. Because each futures contract has both a long and a short side, rising OI does not establish that the market has become net bullish or net bearish. It indicates that outstanding contract inventory increased. Falling OI indicates that inventory decreased, but does not independently reveal who closed positions or what will happen next to price.

OI is also not a direct measure of trader intent, leverage, or liquidation risk. A larger notional OI figure may be relevant to market exposure, but it does not by itself show how much leverage participants use, how positions are distributed, or whether a squeeze is likely. Avoid treating an OI increase as proof of an impending price continuation or reversal.

Use OI as one part of a market snapshot. Compare its change with price movement and traded volume over the same interval, then consider what instrument and venue the figures describe. The combination can help frame what changed in derivatives activity, but it does not turn OI into a deterministic signal.

For perpetual futures, funding is another contextual measure. Crypto.com’s Help Center describes funding as a mechanism intended to encourage a perpetual contract’s mark price to align with the underlying index price. Funding conventions and intervals vary by product, so check the venue’s contract details before comparing readings.
Do not infer that a particular funding rate or OI movement guarantees crowded positioning, liquidation, or a squeeze. These figures describe different features of a derivatives market, and their interpretation depends on the contract and data scope.

Check scope before comparing Bitcoin OI figures
Two figures both labelled “Bitcoin open interest” may cover different markets. Before comparing readings, check the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- Venue: An exchange-specific figure is not automatically a market-wide total.
- Instrument: Dated futures, perpetual swaps, and options are different products. CME’s Bitcoin futures, for example, are financially settled contracts tied to CME CF Reference Rates; crypto venues also offer perpetual futures.
- Unit: A contract count, coin-denominated amount, and dollar notional are not interchangeable. Check how the provider calculates and displays its figure.
- Time: Compare the same timestamp or interval. A point-in-time OI reading is not equivalent to a change measured across a session or day.
- Coverage: Confirm which contracts and venues an aggregate includes, and whether its methodology is documented.
There is no single official cross-venue display convention established for every exchange in the sources cited here. For an exchange’s own figure, consult that exchange’s methodology and contract specifications rather than assuming another venue reports OI the same way.

Why exchange-reported perpetual OI deserves a data check
A 2023 arXiv paper, “Reconciling Open Interest with Traded Volume in Perpetual Swaps,” documented cases in which some large exchanges systematically misquoted Bitcoin perpetual-swap OI, with the extent varying. This is a reason to inspect methodology and corroborate an important reading—not evidence that every exchange or every current OI figure is inaccurate.
A historical CME statistic is not a market-wide Bitcoin total
CME Group’s 2025 cryptocurrency futures and options fact card reported a record average of “$20.8BK contracts per day” in open interest during Q4 2024. The wording and unit in that statistic do not provide a clear, directly comparable Bitcoin-only market total, and the fact card covers CME cryptocurrency futures products. Do not use it as a current total for Bitcoin derivatives across all venues.
