When electricity prices rise, a Bitcoin miner should compare the value of continuing to mine with the avoidable cost of power and any compensation available for reducing load. If curtailment is worth more than the mining revenue forgone, throttling or shutting equipment down can make economic sense. The right response depends on the miner’s hardware, Bitcoin mining revenue, power contract, grid-program rules and location—not on a single electricity-price threshold.
Why there is no universal shutdown price
Mining economics change with both sides of the calculation: the cost of electricity and the expected revenue from the machines using it. Equipment efficiency matters too, because a more efficient ASIC produces more hashing work for the power it consumes. Contract terms and curtailment incentives can further change the value of running or stopping.

ERCOT’s 2024 analysis used average Antminer S19j Pro specifications and an assumed hashprice of $42.75 per PH/s per day to estimate an illustrative break-even cost of $58.4/MWh for its February 2025 assessment. That is a historical, scenario-specific model—not a current industry-wide shutdown price or a threshold that applies to every facility. ERCOT’s analysis makes the assumptions behind the figure essential to interpreting it.
Compare mining with the value of reducing load
For a particular operating period, compare the expected value of mining with the electricity and other costs that can actually be avoided by stopping. Then compare that result with the value of curtailment credits, avoided consumption or other permitted grid-service compensation. Include any costs or rules for ramping equipment down and restarting it; those details vary by site and are not captured by a single break-even figure.

- Compared to the older Antminer APW3++, the new Antminer APW7+ Power Supply is 1800w with an input voltage of 220v. The PCB uses a conformal coating to prevent damage from high voltage spark discharges on MOS pins, or near high-pressure solder joints when external conductive particles or dust enter the PSU.
- Considering the high temperature in mining operations, all internal components are selected with a standard of 105°C, so the APW7 has a much longer lifespan than a general use PSU under similar high temperatures.
- One APW7 can power up one S9i, one L3++, one D3, one V9, one X3, one E3 or one Z9 mini. This APW7 has 5 pairs of 6 pin PCI-E connectors (i.e. 10 connectors)
- The APW7 can deliver a maximum power of only 1000W if it is connected to a 110V mains power supply. To obtain the rated power of 1800W, the APW7 must be connected to a 220-240V mains power supply. Please check the mains power supply that is the standard in your region before ordering.
- The air flow direction runs from the AC input to the DC output, which is the same configuration as most miners. This proves beneficial for those with large-scale mining operations where heat management is a major consideration.
- Mining value: Estimate the revenue the machines are expected to generate during the period, accounting for current mining conditions and the fleet’s efficiency.
- Avoidable costs: Identify which power and operating costs decline if the load is reduced. A contract may affect how much of a higher market price reaches the operator.
- Curtailment value: Determine whether a program or utility arrangement pays for reduced load, and how its eligibility, performance and settlement rules apply to the facility.
- Operational flexibility: Account for which machines can be throttled or switched off, how quickly the site can respond, and the costs of changing operations.
Riot Platforms describes one company-specific approach in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026: it says it powers down operations and returns power to the utility when prevailing market prices make curtailment credits more valuable than the Bitcoin mining revenue it otherwise would have generated. That filing illustrates the comparison; it is not a rule or contract available to all miners. Riot’s filing
Options when power becomes more expensive
Throttle or temporarily shut down
Reducing load during expensive periods is an established response. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported in February 2024 that miners in areas with fluctuating electricity prices had reduced use during periods of high wholesale prices. Whether to throttle or stop depends on the facility’s economics and operating constraints. EIA’s account of U.S. cryptocurrency-mining electricity use

- 1. Interfaces: 24PIN*1, 4+4PIN*1, SATA*8, big 4PIN*4, 6+2PIN*16 - Voltage: Normal operation under 110V-240V
- 2. High temperature protection: When the temperature exceeds 50 centigrade, the power supply will start high temperature protection to avoid damage to it caused by excessive temperature
- 3. Conversion rate: 90% conversion rate, more power saving
- 4. Pure copper core wire: The wire uses a pure copper core, which is resistant to high temperatures and more durable
- 5. Dust-proof and moisture-proof: the power supply is equipped with a dust cover to adapt to various harsh environments

Some large flexible customers may be able to earn compensation or credits by reducing consumption under specified conditions. ERCOT announced a voluntary curtailment program for large flexible customers, including bitcoin mining facilities, in December 2022. ERCOT described participants as large power users with the flexibility and willingness to reduce consumption quickly when needed. Participation is subject to applicable program and market terms; a program announcement does not guarantee eligibility or payment for a particular miner. ERCOT’s program announcement
EIA’s February 2024 article reported that up to 1,530 MW of large industrial consumers had been enlisted to curtail through an ERCOT program. That is a dated program figure, not a current verified enrollment total. EIA also gave a preliminary estimate that U.S. cryptocurrency mining used 0.6% to 2.3% of national electricity consumption; it discontinued its emergency collection of the mining survey, so that range should not be read as a current measurement. Review power procurement and contract exposure
Power procurement and curtailment can work together. Company filings describe long-term power purchase agreements alongside curtailment and demand-response strategies, but the terms determine how a particular operator is exposed to market prices and what flexibility it has. A fixed or long-term arrangement should not be assumed to eliminate every price risk, and access to favorable terms is not uniform. Ionic Digital’s filing describing power-cost management
Use dynamic load management
Software and site controls can help adjust consumption as prices and grid conditions change. Ionic Digital’s 2026 Form 424B4 describes software-based, dynamic load management. That is an example of one operator’s approach, not evidence that every tool has the same features or can meet every market’s response requirements. Ionic Digital’s Form 424B4

Improve fleet efficiency with full costs in view
More efficient ASICs can improve the amount of mining work produced for each unit of electricity, potentially changing which machines remain economical as power costs rise. But a hardware upgrade also has acquisition, deployment, cooling and financing costs. The cited ERCOT example uses Antminer S19j Pro specifications; it does not establish a current model ranking or a payback period for a miner considering an upgrade.

Location can shape power costs and flexibility. EIA has noted that mining facilities may locate near low-cost or stranded energy sources, including methane that might otherwise be flared, and may connect directly to a power source. Siting is a longer-term decision, not an immediate remedy available to every operator. EIA’s discussion of mining sites and electricity use

How market conditions change the response
Electricity cost alone does not determine how much miners reduce consumption. A working paper by Subir Majumder, revised June 3, 2026, uses Texas market data and reports that mining load declines as electricity-sector costs rise, while higher hashprice moderates that response and shifts the implied curtailment threshold upward. This is working-paper evidence about a specific market, not a universal operating rule. Majumder’s working paper
For an operator, the useful distinction is between a short-lived price spike and persistently high power costs. A temporary spike may favor a short curtailment if the site can respond and the foregone mining value is outweighed by avoided costs or compensation. Sustained high costs may make contract review, fleet changes or a different site economics more relevant. Market rules, prices and available programs vary by grid region.
